Chapter 49: Chapter 49: An Unexpected Turn of Events
The two found a charming restaurant near North Sea Park and ordered a pot of yellow wine.
They never felt like strangers, not even when they first met.
And now that they’d spent more time together, they shared a sense of closeness that was difficult to put into words.
They could speak freely, and they always talked about topics that interested each other.
It was a wonderful way to be with someone.
The snow and the wine lifted their spirits, and chatting while drinking made them even happier.
After finishing the pot of yellow wine, Zhao Xiao’an was already tipsy. A rosy, wine-fueled blush appeared on her beautiful cheeks, and she’d lost her usual reserve.
Seeing that it had started to snow heavily again, she suggested they go for a walk and enjoy the snowy nightscape at the North Sea.
Wang Chenning, of course, wouldn’t refuse.
Few people dislike a snowy day. And accompanying a beautiful woman to admire the snow, at night no less? It was an offer no man would refuse.
This kind of romance, a gift from nature itself, had a way of naturally bringing two people who liked each other closer.
After putting on their coats, scarves, hats, and gloves, the two of them walked out of the restaurant.
The snow was falling much heavier now. Under the glow of the streetlights, the air was thick with huge, dancing snowflakes.
It was freezing cold and the roads were slick. There were few people about; the only ones who remained were young, romantic couples.
Zhao Xiao’an was visibly excited. She tilted her head back, catching a few snowflakes in her open palms. Then, with a sudden flick of her wrist, she tossed them onto Wang Chenning’s head and ran off, giggling. "Wang Chenning, let’s build a snowman!"
In her excitement, she didn’t notice the patch of ice beneath her feet. Her foot slipped, and she lost her balance.
As she cried out in alarm, Wang Chenning was already there, steadying her by the arm.
"Thanks! I almost fell!" Zhao Xiao’an said, naturally linking her arm through Wang Chenning’s. "The road is so slick. Holding on to you makes me feel safer."
"Happy to be your crutch, free of charge!" Wang Chenning replied with a smile.
And so, they walked on in this intimate way, and neither of them found it the least bit strange.
Buoyed by liquid courage, Zhao Xiao’an leaned her whole body against Wang Chenning.
’I’m so happy today,’ she thought, feeling as if she were bubbling over with joy.
"Are you cold?" Wang Chenning asked, glancing sideways at her excited face. "You should wrap your scarf tighter!"
"Don’t worry, I’m all warm. I think I’m even sweating a little!" Zhao Xiao’an replied with a captivating smile. "Drinking warm wine on a cold day feels amazing!"
Then, she asked playfully, "If I hadn’t asked you, who were you planning on enjoying the snow with?"
"I would’ve asked you!" Wang Chenning said, smiling at the breathtakingly beautiful Zhao Xiao’an. "Treading through the snow to find winter blossoms... it’s far too romantic to miss!"
"It’s a shame it’s nighttime; the pictures wouldn’t turn out well." Zhao Xiao’an tilted her head as she looked at Wang Chenning. "I’m sure there will still be snow tomorrow. Why don’t we make some time to go to the Forbidden City and take some pictures? The Forbidden City after a snowfall... its beauty is absolutely captivating. Want to go?"
Wang Chenning nodded. "I’d love to, but it’s bound to be packed with tourists!"
Seeing his interest, Zhao Xiao’an grew even more cheerful. "How about I take you to some areas that aren’t open to the public?"
"That would be amazing!" Wang Chenning said, holding out his pinky to her. "Then it’s a deal!"
"Okay!" Zhao Xiao’an hooked her pinky with his. "I’ll bring my professional camera tomorrow. I promise I can make you look your most handsome, but I’m not so sure about your skills as a photographer!"
Wang Chenning laughed. "Well, you can always just get the settings right, and all I’ll have to do is press the button!"
"Good point!" Zhao Xiao’an let go of his arm, spread her own arms wide, and tilted her head toward the sky, twirling twice in the snow. "And I’m going to shoot a video of me dancing in the snow in the Forbidden City! I’ll wear something red..."
As she spoke, she did a little skip and added gleefully, "You can see me dance then. I guarantee it will be an eye-opening experience!"
"Now my curiosity is piqued!" Wang Chenning said. ’Zhao Xiao’an isn’t as unrestrained as Luo Yuqing, and she’s completely different from the perpetually cool Yang Xiaofei. She’s genuine and adorable. Her near-flawless beauty, combined with that spontaneity, creates an impression of beauty that feels so real, so full of spirit.’
’Moreover, she isn’t impish like Yang Xiaofu. Her playfulness is tempered by an innate poise and elegance, much like Hepburn’s character in *Roman Holiday*. It’s impossible not to be fond of her.’
The two of them were in the highest of spirits, utterly overjoyed. They never expected that tragedy would strike at the peak of their happiness, right in the midst of this tender moment.
While laughing and skipping, Zhao Xiao’an accidentally stepped on a clump of packed snow. She stumbled, then slipped and fell.
There happened to be a downward slope right next to her, and as she struggled to get up, she started sliding down it.
"Ah—!" she cried out, her hands desperately grasping for anything to hold onto.
But the icy snow was too slick, and she ended up sliding right under the chain barrier and into Beihai Lake.
Wang Chenning’s reaction was a beat too slow. As he lunged forward, he almost slipped and fell on the icy ground himself.
His outstretched hand missed her by about four inches, and he could only watch, helpless, as she slid into the lake.
The sudden accident threw Zhao Xiao’an into a state of pure terror, and her horrified scream echoed far into the night...
