Chapter 73: Chapter 73: You Lost

After agreeing to raise the stakes with Chang Qingfeng, Wang Chenning turned to Zhao Xiao’an and said rather shamelessly, "Looks like today’s outing is going to be quite fruitful. How about this? We can trade cars from now on. You drive my Maserati, and I’ll drive your BMW X5?"

Zhao Xiao’an didn’t know whether to laugh or cry.

’Dude, you can’t be this arrogant. You’re basically grinding the Chang family’s faces into the dirt!’

’And the match hasn’t even started!’

Wang Chenning’s words made Chang Qingfeng’s face darken as he seethed. He couldn’t help but sneer, "Don’t talk so big. Let’s hope you can actually pay up when you lose. When the time comes, don’t blame us for being merciless."

Chang Qingfeng didn’t actually think Wang Chenning couldn’t come up with the 2.8 million. For a reasonably accomplished expert in traditional medicine, earning a few million, or even ten million, was a simple matter. He was just so infuriated by Wang Chenning that he wanted to beat the kid to a pulp, so he didn’t mince his words.

"Then let’s begin!" Chang Hongwei ordered his men to bring out the acupuncture practice dummies.

Soon, staff from the National Medical Hall came out carrying two acupuncture dummies.

Dummies like these were common in many establishments like the National Medical Hall. They were tools for apprentices to practice acupuncture. The bronze figures were covered with densely marked acupoints and filled with liquid. If a needle struck an acupoint correctly, the liquid would leak out. If it missed, nothing would happen.

Chang Qingfeng had someone bring him the silver needles he always used, then asked Wang Chenning what needles he required.

While the silver needles used for acupuncture might look largely the same, they were a very particular matter for the practitioner. Most had their own dedicated set, and Wang Chenning was no exception.

To use an analogy, if one could perform at one hundred percent effectiveness with their own familiar needles, they could at best achieve ninety percent—or even less—with an unfamiliar set.

"Just bring me any box of needles," Wang Chenning said, still smiling.

To Chang Qingfeng, however, that smile was infuriating. He wanted nothing more than to smash his fist into it a few times.

’This bastard isn’t taking us seriously at all.’

A staff member soon brought Wang Chenning a very ordinary box of needles. Wang Chenning accepted them, merely remarking with a meaningful tone, "A physician’s accomplishments are deeply related to their character. Based on that alone, the limits of you and your grandfather’s medical skills are already pre-determined."

A muscle in Chang Hongwei’s face twitched, but he ultimately held himself back.

Chang Qingfeng barked furiously, "If you had any requests, you should have made them before the competition! Don’t come up with excuses to back out of the bet after you lose."

Wang Chenning cupped his hands toward the Changs. "I’m willing to honor the bet if I lose. I won’t go back on my word, and I trust Young Master Chang and Elder Chang are the same."

The muscle in Chang Hongwei’s face twitched again. He was truly enraged.

They tossed a coin to decide who would go first. Wang Chenning called heads, Chang Qingfeng called tails. When the coin landed, it was tails.

Chang Qingfeng would go first.

Zhao Xiao’an had initially assumed they would both perform at the same time, racing to see who could place a required number of needles the fastest. He was surprised to learn that the rule was instead to see who could land the most effective needles in one minute.

To prevent cheating, as well as for mutual supervision and learning, one person would perform at a time while the others watched from the side.

A resident physician from the National Medical Hall and Zhao Xiao’an, the reporter, served as judges.

Wang Chenning had no objection to the rules Chang Hongwei had laid out. He wouldn’t have raised an issue no matter what they decided.

"Begin!"

At Zhao Xiao’an’s command, Chang Qingfeng took a needle in his right hand and began to work.

Zhao Xiao’an took out his phone, switched it to video mode, and prepared to record the entire process to prevent any disputes when the competition was over.

Chang Qingfeng was dead set on winning, which made him impetuous and his movements rushed. His first needle missed the acupoint. His second landed squarely on the mark, but he used insufficient force, and the mercury inside didn’t flow out.

Fortunately, Chang Qingfeng’s composure was decent. He quickly adjusted and made no further mistakes.

The minute was over quickly. Chang Qingfeng had landed a total of one hundred and seventy effective needles.

He had placed one hundred seventy-two needles in total. Other than his first two, all of them were effective.

This was already an incredible speed, averaging almost three needles per second. To the onlookers, his hands were a dazzling blur.

When the timer stopped, Chang Qingfeng wiped the sweat from his brow. He then gave Wang Chenning a smug flick of his hand. "My apologies for winning."

"Not a bad technique," Wang Chenning offered as praise, then sat down and prepared to begin.

In sharp contrast to Chang Qingfeng’s tense expression, Wang Chenning looked completely relaxed, as if he were out for a leisurely stroll.

As Zhao Xiao’an watched nervously and the others looked on, Wang Chenning began placing the needles.

Wang Chenning’s technique didn’t seem particularly fast, at least not to Zhao Xiao’an. His hand didn’t move as frequently as Chang Qingfeng’s. However, Chang Hongwei and the few other professionals in the crowd saw the true skill on display, and their expressions changed.

Wang Chenning’s arm was almost still, but his wrist moved with incredible swiftness. The speed of his needling was astonishing, and each insertion was powerful.

With every needle he inserted, liquid flowed from the opening.

Soon, the minute was up.

"Two hundred and fifty-one needles." This was the identical number that the staff member from the National Medical Hall and Zhao Xiao’an both reached after their independent counts.

Though he had anticipated it, Chang Hongwei’s expression soured at the final count.

Meanwhile, the smug look on Chang Qingfeng’s face vanished, replaced by a deathly pallor. He couldn’t believe—and wouldn’t accept—this result.

"That’s impossible! You must have miscounted! Even my grandfather might not be able to achieve that number."

Chang Qingfeng completely ignored Zhao Xiao’an. Forgetting all decorum, he lunged toward the acupuncture dummy Wang Chenning had used, intent on counting the needles himself.

"Don’t you trust us, Young Master Chang?" Zhao Xiao’an’s expression turned unfriendly. "Are you suggesting that both I and a staff member from your own hall helped Wang Chenning by padding his score?"

"You must have miscounted!" Chang Qingfeng shoved Zhao Xiao’an aside and crouched down to count the needle holes on Wang Chenning’s dummy.

Wang Chenning immediately reached out, steadying Zhao Xiao’an by the arm before giving Chang Qingfeng a shove at the small of his back.

His movements were so quick that not even Chang Hongwei noticed.

As a result, Zhao Xiao’an simply took a steady step aside without losing his balance. Chang Qingfeng, however, felt a sudden soreness in his lower back and plopped right down onto a stool.

After he sat down, his body became unstable. To everyone’s surprise, he pitched forward, right into the acupuncture dummy he had just used, sending it crashing to the floor.

The crisp sound of the bronze dummy hitting the floor made many people jump...
