Chapter 1992: Chapter 1991: Hot Potato
Niu Gengtian appeared big and brawny, possibly someone who could reach the level of a Demon General, but he was no fool.
The sudden emergence of the Fire Phoenix Clan was exceedingly peculiar, right at the onset of the great battle.
This war against Ancestor Dragon City could very well be the final showdown, as it is a continuation of the previous clash.
Currently, within the Demon Country, everything seemed harmonious, with all gathered around the Dragon Emperor. But who knows what lies beneath the surface?
Especially with the Eight Gold Tribes, each holding significant power—one tribe might not intimidate the Dragon Emperor, but a coalition of three or five might make even the Dragon Emperor reconsider.
After all, the lineage of the Dragon Emperor is scarce. The former Dragon Emperor was mighty, and the tribes needed the Dragon Emperor to maintain balance, thus giving rise to the current Demon Country.
Yet, over two hundred years ago, the Vermilion Bird suffered heavy damage, and the Dragon Emperor didn’t fare well either. For two centuries, the Dragon Emperor has been secluded, seldom seen, cultivating in the Sky Cold Pond, which has led some to speculate about the lingering injuries from back then.
Does he not know of those harboring rebellious thoughts?
This was the one who calculated against the Fire Phoenix Clan, achieving great power eventually, perhaps now fishing in the shadows.
Niu Gengtian also speculated; firstly, that the Dragon Emperor was indeed severely injured, and no longer what he once was, perhaps trying to manipulate by using the Fire Phoenix Clan as bait to see who has ambition and dissatisfaction.
Secondly, that the Dragon Emperor has recovered, but as the ruler, doesn’t want his underlings beyond his control, desiring to display his Thunder Power to show everyone that he is still formidable.
The imperial mind is difficult to fathom.
Niu Gengtian pondered much at once, concluding that it was best not to involve with the Fire Phoenix Clan’s affairs.
Yet, Yexiu actually took up this hot potato, thinking he might reap some benefits from the chaos?
Well, there’s been news that a new Demon King emerged in the Wolf Clan, which was indeed surprising, but the situation has deepened.
Niu Gengtian shook his head; as the matter fell to Yexiu’s end, it was unnecessary to worry himself about it.
"What does the Lion Commander say?"
Yue Li approached and asked as Yexiu arrived.
"It’s pretty much as we discussed; the Lion Commander plans to keep them for now and use them as bait to see what he can lure out. Additionally, they’ve been placed onto our side."
Yexiu replied.
"Is the Lion Commander testing us?"
"Not exactly; I’m thinking if the Fire Phoenix Clan’s emergence is indeed that person’s move?"
"Are you referring to the Dragon Emperor?"
Yue Li, smart and astute, quickly realized whom Yexiu meant.
"Though now it isn’t dragons and phoenixes co-ruling, the Dragon Emperor stands tall, commanding all tribes, he’s somewhat sidelined while our Eight Tribes have expanded powerfully. Would the Dragon Emperor just watch us sideline his authority?"
Yexiu stated slowly.
Upon hearing, Yue Li inhaled deeply: "So this Fire Phoenix Clan might be bait he set, to test us."
"This battle may lead to the fall of Ancestor Dragon City, but the humans there won’t just sit and wait—it’s bound to be a monumental battle with countless casualties."
"Without getting his own hands dirty, he might employ others, which is reminiscent of his methods."
"Then the Fire Phoenix Clan is indeed a hot potato."
"It’s both a hot potato and a knife; it depends on how it’s used, Yue Li, keep an eye on the Fire Phoenix Clan member here in our camp."
Yexiu turned to Yue Li.
Yue Li nodded: "Alright."
As they spoke, a gust blew across, sending sand northward.
Northeast of First Line Pass.
Sikong Yu and Ouyang Qiuhai, having traversed through First Line Gorge, halted about a hundred miles from First Line Pass.
"Why have we stopped, Sister Yu? First Line Pass is near."
Ouyang Qiuhai looked at Sikong Yu who had stopped. From beside, towards the west, she saw the wide gorge’s end where a mountain stood; it was the terminus of First Line Gorge, the location of First Line Pass.
At their speed, even without mounts, it wouldn’t take half a day to reach the destination. Having endured the outdoors for so long, Ouyang Qiuhai yearned to reach First Line Pass, take a refreshing shower, and sleep for a day and night.
Sikong Yu shook her head: "We cannot go back."
"We can’t go back, why?"
Ouyang Qiuhai’s almond eyes widened: "Li Feng is still over at the Demon Clan side, waiting for us to connect with First Line Pass and coordinate from inside and out."
Sikong Yu replied: "I am aware, which is why we cannot rush back; the Demon Clan’s infiltration into Ancestor Dragon City has been severe these years, with the Ten Demon Hall’s minions aiding them. Normal methods struggle to identify enemy spies."
"If we return now, observed by anyone, the plans might crumble. Also, do you think anyone will take Li Feng seriously based on our reports?"
"Um..."
Ouyang Qiuhai paused: "That’s hard to say; you and I are not influential, even if my father is Ouyang Tianshu, the situation at First Line Pass doesn’t solely rely on him."
"Moreover, even if my father believes us, he finds it hard to believe Li Feng can make a significant impact, not just him, I myself doubt a little."
"Li Feng is audacious; he tricked numerous demons on this journey, even got some working for him. But convincing them to assault their own camp is like a pipe dream."
"Besides, once he’s at the demon camp, his identity might reveal quickly, amidst hundreds of thousands of demons, even the Monkey King couldn’t escape."
"First Line Pass wouldn’t risk an assault on the demon camp for him; doing so would elate the demons, for First Line Pass’s advantage is geography."
Ouyang Qiuhai shook her head; she disagreed with Li Feng’s venture from start to finish, but the two couldn’t sway Li Feng.
"Thus, this matter shouldn’t be disclosed, we shouldn’t return yet, try to reach your father before discussing further."
"Do you have anything that can serve as proof to your father, confirming your presence?"
"Yes, this is simple; this earring was my coming-of-age gift from my father, specially crafted, engraved with my name."
"Bi Fang senior, could you perhaps go to First Line Pass, find Qiuhai’s father, and have him meet us here alone?"
Sikong Yu outlined Ouyang Tianshu’s appearance, handed Bi Fang the earring.
"Alright, I’ll do my best."
Bi Fang was almost used to being a tool bird by now.
