Chapter 2017: Chapter 2016: There Will Be Battle Today

"Lion Commander, will he attack First Line Pass with his full strength tomorrow?"

Wanyan Xiu listened, a cold smile playing at the corner of his mouth: "It’s not up to him."

One silent night passed.

In the blink of an eye, it was morning. The blades of grass in the wild plains still hung with the dewdrops of last night, and the Demon Clan camp resounded with the sound of ox horns blowing. At the northwest corner of the continuous chain of Demon Clan camps, tens of thousands of demons formed one formation after another, marching out in single file.

In the left camp, there was a high platform built upon a mound of earth, allowing the whole empty field in front of First Line Pass to be observed from a commanding position. Wolf Commander Ye Xiu and the Demon King of the Silver Moon Clan, Yue Li, came to this platform, gazing down at the camp oriented towards the northwest.

From that vantage, one could see the square arrays of the northwest camp marching out in single file, one after another. Their appearance, at least, held some semblance.

"Tsk, didn’t expect that this Fire Phoenix Clan lad knows how to marshal troops, actually looking somewhat decent," Ye Xiu clicked his tongue, making a smacking sound.

Yue Li coldly swept his gaze over the formation, continuing to disparage as usual: "A mere facade. According to the reports from our sentinels, these past few days, all they have done is gather the Demon Clan under his command indiscriminately into groups of two thousand five hundred to form a square array."

"This formation looks somewhat imposing, but it’s still nothing more than a mob, no different from those cannon fodder before."

Ye Xiu didn’t echo Yue Li’s words but turned his head to look at the newly appointed Demon King, Gu Feng: "You’ve had more contact with this Feng Yang, what do you think he’s up to?"

Upon hearing Ye Xiu’s question, Gu Feng pondered slightly: "Wolf Commander, although I have engaged with this Feng Yang several times, we aren’t truly acquainted. Perhaps it’s because Feng Yang is elusive, his actions always surprising but, upon reflection, one finds logical traces, rules."

"Oh?"

Gu Feng continued: "Wolf Commander, my belief is that whatever Feng Yang is planning, there is one constant."

"Feng Yang is striving for survival."

As Ye Xiu heard those two words from Gu Feng, his wolf eyes narrowed: "Continue."

"Yes, Wolf Commander."

"From my first encounter with Feng Yang, demons were already gathered around him. At my garrison camp, he mercilessly attacked my Wolf Clan’s garrison commander, intending, I’m afraid, to use my Wolf Clan for fame."

"Furthermore, after suppressing me, he revealed his methods of Bloodline refinement, even helping me ascend to Demon King, undoubtedly premeditated, striking with one hand while offering a sweet promise with the other."

"Though I previously harbored resentment against him, unfortunately, skill fell short and I could only endure silently. But with my Wolf Clan and the Wolf Commander, there would be no idle disregard. By aiding my ascension as Demon King, he had a bargaining chip."

Gu Feng expressed all his contemplations in a single breath, with Yue Li beside him glancing at him one more time.

Ye Xiu acknowledged with a hum: "Your analysis is quite good, the lad from the Fire Phoenix Clan certainly has some substance."

"We are indeed, due to various considerations, aware he cannot remain, yet are reluctant to act directly."

"Lion Commander likely saw this, too, thus adopting such a desperate measure, forcing him into battle, unwilling to give the youth further time to absorb gains, lest he truly rise, leaving us as laughingstocks."

After speaking, Ye Xiu turned his gaze towards the army heading out of camp towards First Line Pass.

"Do you think he will exert his full strength?"

Gu Feng replied: "Wolf Commander, afraid he won’t care for the life and death of those demons who pledged allegiance to him, despite his significant expansion during these times, he’s scarcely regarded these demons as confidants, let alone aided their advancement."

"I believe, even without Lion Commander’s order, Feng Yang would request to storm First Line Pass."

"Oh, and why is that?"

"There are three reasons. One, although Feng Yang exchanged much material, distributed per head, it won’t last long; he cannot sustain so many warriors."

"Two, he harbors ambitions and thus should know the gap between rabble and elites; the lesson from Yue Li must have made him realize this point—the rabble will never match elites, no matter how numerous."

"Therefore, he must ensure survival of the fittest and retain those capable of fighting, with the siege of First Line Pass being the ideal proving ground."

"The third reason, still the same, he needs elite, battle-ready soldiers as his foundation, and his capability in aiding transformations is not boundless. These days, having nurtured over ten thousand warriors, he should be strained."

"Thus, even if we don’t act, he would cease previous dealings."

Listening to Gu Feng’s clear answer, Ye Xiu said: "Seems I haven’t mistaken you; the new Wind and Fire Knights will be commanded by you."

"Thank you, Wolf Commander, for granting this.

"It’s good to have ambition, but it should be measured. The strength gained from Feng Yang does not belong to the Wolf Clan. Proper use can elevate you, but misuse spells destruction."

"Understand?"

"Wolf Commander, my existence as the demon of Wolf Clan, I live for its essence and die as its soul. Though aided by Feng Yang in becoming Demon King, before my tribe, I will not hesitate."

Gu Feng struck his palm against his breast.

"Well then, let’s see how this Fire Phoenix Clan heir wages this fight."

Ye Xiu tapped Gu Feng, his gaze fixing upon the distant First Line Pass.

Simultaneously, upon two nearby camps, Lion Commander and Ox Commander observed personally, and opposite First Line Pass, its Garrison Commander, commanding ten thousand cultivators, Ouyang Tianshu also arrived at First Line Pass’s gate tower, gazing ahead.
