"Ma'am, it looks like you used a bit more than just a tap," Coulson said, his mouth hanging open in sheer disbelief as he watched the scene unfold.
Karma really was a swift and merciless force. Thor, a man who spent all year smashing his massive hammer into other people's chests, had just been effortlessly blown away by a mortal woman's tiny fist.
"Thor!" Jane screamed in absolute panic as she watched the god of thunder go flying upside down through the air.
She looked at her own hands in horror; she swore she had barely used any force at all.
"Calm down, ma'am," Coulson said, shifting immediately into his S.H.I.E.L.D. crisis-management mode. "Something strange seems to have happened to you, so please try not to get agitated."
He was incredibly experienced in dealing with the bizarre, but his practiced composure faltered the moment he reached out to grab Jane's shoulder to steady her.
A violent, dark red light flared to life, exploding the second his right hand made contact with her shoulder.
The kinetic shockwave forced Jane to stumble backward instinctively, while Coulson was violently launched through the air, crashing hard into the thick mud.
"What is going on here?" Jane cried out, completely terrified after inadvertently injuring two people in a row.
Suddenly, her legs went entirely limp, and she collapsed to the dirt, gasping desperately for breath.
As her emotional state grew more frantic, wisps of volatile, blood-colored energy began swimming visibly beneath her pale skin.
It writhed unpredictably, looking as if it were on the verge of tearing her apart from the inside out.
Just as Jane was entirely consumed by helpless panic, a young, black-haired girl suddenly materialized right in front of her.
Looking at the beautiful child, who resembled a fragile porcelain doll, Jane's chest tightened with sheer dread.
She didn't want to hurt this innocent kid, but she had absolutely no control over the catastrophic force coursing through her veins.
Ignoring the surging red energy, the little girl simply reached out and placed a small hand directly against Jane.
Before Jane could even scream a warning, a soothing silver-blue light flowed seamlessly from the girl into her body.
A sudden, heavy exhaustion washed over Jane's eyes, and she slumped forward, falling unconscious into the child's small arms.
"What did you do to Jane?" Thor demanded.
He had finally managed to drag himself out of the rubble, staggering over with a deeply anxious expression etched across his face.
"It's nothing serious. I merely cast a sleeping hex on her," Luna replied casually.
Without another word, she unceremoniously tossed the unconscious astrophysicist over to the thunder god.
"Do you have any idea what's happening to her, Miss?" Coulson asked, groaning as he struggled to his feet and rubbed his bruised jaw. "This certainly doesn't look like the typical awakening of a Meta."
Ever since the rise of Metas around the globe, this was the first time the veteran agent had suffered such an immediate, humiliating defeat in the field.
"If I'm not mistaken, this feels exactly like the Aether," Luna said, her face twisting into a deep, ugly scowl as she glared at Jane.
"How did a nightmare like this end up on Earth? What is wrong with you Asgardians, always using Midgard as a dumping ground for your apocalyptic garbage?"
"You know what this substance is?" Thor asked, his eyes lighting up with desperate hope as he looked at the little girl like she was his savior.
"It's mostly just ancient rumors I've picked up over the centuries," Luna said thoughtfully, crossing her arms.
"According to the legends, that red sludge is the ultimate spoil of war claimed by the second-generation God King, Bor—your grandfather—after he annihilated the King of the Dark Elves."
"Then do you know of a way to extract it from Jane's body?" Thor pleaded, practically hanging on her every word.
"You're better off asking your father that question; he might actually have the answer hidden away in his vaults," Luna advised bluntly. "And you'd better hurry."
"As far as I know, the Aether is fiercely parasitic. It grants the host immense power, but it feeds directly on their life force in return."
She gestured vaguely at Jane's unconscious form. "This woman is just a fragile, mortal human. If she tries to channel that energy even a few more times, the Aether will drain her completely dry."
"I know what I have to do," Thor muttered, grinding his teeth as an unyielding flash of determination burned in his eyes.
It was time for a difficult family reunion. He didn't care about the ancient rules dictating that gods and mortals couldn't mix; if his father tried to lecture him about royal protocol now, Thor was prepared to ignore every word.
"Hold on. If you're heading back to Asgard, take the two of us with you," Luna interjected, firmly grabbing Ethan Hunt by the arm. "I happen to have a few pointed questions for Odin myself."
Hearing this, Ethan, who had been quietly observing the chaos, blinked in surprise before a sharp flash of understanding crossed his features.
If an ancient, world-ending weapon like the Aether had suddenly resurfaced, the horrific enemies connected to it couldn't be far behind.
Earth was the central hub connecting the Nine Realms, leaving it entirely vulnerable to the incoming crossfire.
'Rather than sitting around waiting for the sky to fall, it's better to take the fight to them and prepare early,' Ethan reasoned to himself.
"Think of it as bringing a friend to see the sights of your homeworld," Ethan offered with a calm, even tone. "Besides, considering what's inside her, you're going to need our help."
Thor hesitated for only a fraction of a second before giving a stiff, decisive nod. "Very well."
"Heimdall, open the Bifrost!" Thor roared at the cloudy sky, raising his sledgehammer high above his head.
An instant later, a deafening crack tore through the atmosphere, and a blinding, kaleidoscopic column of energy slammed into the earth.
Caught in the immense gravitational pull of the beam, Ethan's body was instantly yanked upward, accelerating into the upper atmosphere at staggering velocities.
Before he could even admire the curvature of the blue planet shrinking beneath him, the Bifrost hurled them entirely out of the solar system.
The breathtaking, star-filled void of space he had expected to see never materialized.
Instead, their surroundings blurred into a chaotic tunnel of streaking, iridescent light cutting through absolute darkness, as the Bifrost warped the very fabric of space-time around them.
Unbothered by the visual distortion, Ethan closed his eyes and extended his awareness, tuning his mind to the fundamental physical forces guiding their transit.
He began mapping the kinetic and spatial vectors flowing around them, instantly noticing that the energy forming their bridge wasn't unique.
He sensed massive, intertwined pathways of directional energy—vast, naturally occurring conduits of propulsion that converged, intertwined, and dispersed into the deepest corners of the universe.
When he mentally synthesized these shifting dimensional vectors, the overarching structure formed the undeniable silhouette of a colossal tree.
It existed on a plane above ordinary space, its branches forming stable, high-velocity pathways that bypassed the physical gravity wells of countless stars.
Suspended within this incomprehensible structure were nine distinct focal points—spheres of immense gravitational density radiating unique energy signatures—representing the planets of the Nine Realms.
"What kind of structural anomaly is this..." Ethan murmured, genuinely awestruck by the sheer magnitude of the spatial physics at play.
'That's right, this is the true face of the World Tree,' Luna's voice echoed directly into Ethan's mind.
It was only through her mystical tether anchoring his perception that he was able to comprehend the impossible scale of Yggdrasil without his mind fracturing.
'So the World Tree is a tangible, physical construct?' Ethan asked internally, his scientific curiosity thoroughly piqued.
'It exists, and yet it doesn't,' Luna explained patiently. 'You perceive it as a tree, but it is not a living organism.'
'Its true form is a vast network of naturally occurring, intertwined cosmic wormholes. At the terminal entry and exit vectors of these spatial anomalies, nine specific planets capable of supporting life are anchored. Hence, the Nine Realms.'
'I see,' Ethan thought, nodding in understanding.
The Bifrost wasn't generating a new path; it was merely a highly advanced propulsion device designed to inject matter into these pre-existing spatial vectors, allowing Asgardians to navigate the natural wormhole network at will.
The velocity of their transit was staggering. Before Ethan could further analyze the vector topology of the World Tree, a brilliant speck of gold rapidly expanded in his vision.
The light swallowed their surroundings as they approached the pinnacle of the cosmic structure—the realm of Asgard.
With a deafening boom, their terrifying forward velocity vanished in an instant.
Ethan opened his eyes to find himself standing inside a magnificent, dome-shaped observatory crafted from gleaming gold.
In the exact center of the chamber stood a towering, imposing figure clad in heavy golden armor, his hands resting on the hilt of an enormous, rune-carved broadsword. It was the all-seeing gatekeeper, Heimdall.
"Your Highness, if His Majesty discovers you have smuggled mortals into Asgard without his permission, he will not be pleased," Heimdall stated.
His voice was deep and commanding, yet beneath the stoic exterior, there was a subtle, weary trace of resignation. There was little the gatekeeper could do to stop the stubborn crown prince once his mind was set.
Sighing faintly, Heimdall shifted his penetrating gaze toward Luna and Ethan.
Suddenly, the gatekeeper stiffened, a sharp gasp escaping his lips as his stoic composure shattered.
"A demigod..." Heimdall murmured in genuine shock. "Wait. I have seen your face before."
He leaned in, his golden eyes wide with recognition. "Millennia ago, when King Odin led our armies against the Frost Giants in Midgard, a rogue faction of Eternals and Deviants aided us on the second front. You... you were one of the commanders of those anomalies."
