Red!
All one could see was red. Here, at the summit of Demon Mountain, an enormous mass of crimson Demonic Qi was billowing into the heavens, obscuring the entire sky.
Beyond the great doors before Luo An, there was nothing but a vast emptiness. Looking down, he saw only roiling lava.
So, the summit of Demon Mountain was a giant volcanic crater.
The grand hall they were in was embedded into the inner wall of the crater. One more step and Luo An would have plunged into the roiling magma below.
Just then, Chu Guifeng, Ma Wan, Tao Ying, and the others reached the doorway. They too looked up in shock at the red mist that enveloped them and blotted out the sky.
"This is Demonic Qi!"
Tao Ying was the one who spoke.
"ROAR!"
A sudden, terrifying roar, so loud it was deafening, echoed deep within their souls.
The group froze. From the volcanic crater below the summit, a crimson tide surged upward, and a monstrous, terrifying face materialized, filling the entire pool of lava.
It opened its cavernous mouth, its two crimson eyes blazing to life. With a deafening roar, it shot toward the heavens.
A single glance was enough to make their hearts clench as if caught in a vise. An unparalleled terror washed over them, leaving them trembling, their blood running cold, and their hair standing on end.
Their legs gave out from under them, and they scrambled back into the hall.
Fortunately, the terrifying face only made it halfway up before it was abruptly yanked back down by some unseen force.
However, one Darts Master in the group wasn't fast enough to retreat and was devoured by the horrifying face.
By the time the horrifying face fell back down, all that remained in his place was a lone pair of feet.
Luo An's eyes widened. He turned to Tao Ying, gasping for breath. "What was that?"
Tao Ying's chest was also heaving. She said nothing, merely nodding her head.
It took a long while for everyone to calm down. They stared blankly at the main entrance. The outside was now completely enveloped in Demonic Qi. They had no way out, lest they be devoured by the Celestial Demon in the lava below.
"Is there no other way out?"
Chu Guifeng and Ma Wan both turned to Tao Ying at the same time.
Tao Ying remained silent, impassively shaking her head.
Then, as one, the group abruptly turned to look at Daoxing.
He was sitting cross-legged with his eyes shut tight. Billowing waves of heat radiated from his body, which had turned completely red. The only other thing visible were the Wandering Dragons of Spiritual Power coiling around him.
"Dammit! I'm not going to be trapped here to die."
Luo An shot to his feet and ran deeper into the hall, hoping to find another exit.
However, the only thing on the interior walls of the hall was a single Ancient Copper Mirror hanging high above. There were no other exits.
Luo An suddenly raised his longsword high. The Spiritual Power in his body erupted as he brought the blade down upon the wall.
"CLANG!"
A sound like the striking of a great bronze bell rang out, echoing through the hall.
The hall's wall merely rippled like the surface of water, completely undamaged. But in that brief moment, the faint outline of a door leading deeper inside was revealed.
Chu Guifeng, Ma Wan, and the others rushed forward to help.
However, they had only taken a few steps before they all stopped dead in their tracks.
Luo An turned around and saw that every single one of them was staring at him with wide eyes, as if they had just seen something terrifying.
"What's wrong?" Luo An asked, confused.
"DRIP!"
"DRIP!"
From the beams high above, a droplet of something fell, landing on Luo An's arm.
Luo An froze. He caught the foul stench of saliva and, realizing what it might be, quickly looked up.
And there, leaning down from the hall's rafters, was a gigantic lion's face. Its mouth was hanging open, and it stared down at him with a greedy expression.
It was a colossal lion with three large, piercing eyes. A pair of enormous red wings covered its majestic and imposing body.
"It's Chi Yi! Chi Yi!"
Chu Guifeng and Ma Wan shouted, having recognized the beast.
Without any command, the group fell back in unison, then all turned to look at Shen Daoxing.
But at that moment, Shen Daoxing's body was beet red and radiating waves of heat. He was at a critical juncture in his cultivation.
Seeing this, Chu Guifeng shook his head and gave Luo An a pitying look. "Luo, you're on your own."
Meanwhile, Luo An was locked in a staring contest with Chi Yi, not daring to move a muscle. He was terrified that the slightest movement would provoke the beast into swallowing him whole.
At that moment, Ma Wan shot Luo An a meaningful look. "Kid, weren't you just saying you wouldn't be afraid even if you ran into the Great Wilderness? That this Chi Yi was nothing? So why do you look so terrified now?"
Luo An's face fell. He was in a bind he couldn't explain. Staring into Chi Yi's enormous eyes, his feet had turned to stone; he couldn't move even if he wanted to.
"ROAR!"
A great roar echoed through the entire hall.
Chi Yi suddenly moved. It opened its massive jaws and lunged, about to swallow Luo An in a single gulp.
Suddenly.
A small gray shadow flashed past, tracing a graceful arc through the air before landing with a "THWACK" on Chi Yi's face.
Chi Yi's massive face contorted from the kick, and its enormous body crashed to the ground.
The onlookers were stunned. Looking closer, they saw what stood in front of Luo An: an inconspicuous, palm-sized gray mouse. It was Hui, the pet Shen Daoxing always kept by his side.
"ROAR!"
At that, Chi Yi let out an angry roar and scrambled to its feet. Its fury had been ignited, and it glared ahead with a demonic ferocity.
But when its eyes landed on Hui, it froze.
Hui, meanwhile, put its two front paws on its hips and began to squeak, looking at Chi Yi with an expression of profound disappointment, as if scolding a protégé for failing to live up to expectations.
With its paws on its hips, it paced back and forth, pointing and gesturing at Chi Yi while squeaking nonstop, exactly like an elder scolding a junior.
Still squeaking, Hui suddenly leaped up again and slapped Chi Yi across the face.
Chi Yi froze for a moment after being slapped, but instead of getting angry, it lowered its head.
At this moment, Chi Yi had lost all of its earlier fiendishness. After being slapped by Hui, it only let out a few mournful whimpers, as if trying to explain itself pitifully.
But Hui clearly had no patience for explanations and leaped up again.
"SLAP!"
"SLAP!"
Two more hard slaps landed squarely on Chi Yi's massive face.
"ROAR!"
Chi Yi just let out a plaintive roar. It offered no resistance, finally lowering its head and prostrating itself at Hui's feet. It even wagged its lion-like tail, its expression turning into one of fawning appeasement.
A Fierce Beast on par with the Ninth Layer of the Earth Profound Realm, one of the Four Great Fierce Beasts of the East Continent, was now wagging its tail and begging for mercy, groveling on the ground to please a mere palm-sized mouse.
The sheer contrast was staggering.
Nearby, Luo An, Tao Ying, Chu Guifeng, and the others could only watch, completely dumbfounded.
