"Checkmate."
"And again."
"Another one."
The scene at the cafeteria quickly became a laughing matter.
George consistently won the chess game. He gave Ray no chance to counterattack at all.
In the meantime, Ray’s back was soaked in sweat.
’Fuck, this isn’t how it should go. Shouldn’t I be like doing big Brian plays and he falls for it, which allows me to overturn the terrible situation in one go?’ Ray couldn’t understand.
He sacrificed so many of his pieces to lure George on the traps he learned online, but the latter avoided them all.
"Wow, you really suck at chess," Samantha commented. She thought he had some skills. But his so-called skills were losing all his pieces for nothing.
Belva didn’t get to witness the miracle moment of Ray being defeated constantly because she went to get him food.
She already had a gist of what Ray preferred in food, and it was her maid’s duty to do those without an order.
However, she would certainly regret the efficient action if she knew she would miss such a spectacle.
"What’s going on here?" Belva returned with a stack of food and glanced at the chessboard.
Black pieces barely had any left while the white pieces were still strong.
Initially, she thought Ray was a white piece, but her expression changed when she saw Ray hovering between the black pieces.
’Why would you use the knight piece?’ She was startled when Ray picked up the Knight piece.
His bishop piece was being attacked, and the knight piece wouldn’t be able to defend or attack the opponent’s king.
’It’s over.’ Belva was certain he was going to be down more pieces. The same goes for Samantha, who noticed Ray was hanging the bishop piece.
But to their surprise, George didn’t take the free bishop and actually moved his rook piece instead.
Now, for those who don’t understand chess, just know it was a totally unexpected move.
"Damn it!" Ray clicked his tongue when George figured out his sly trick again. That rook perfectly stopped the smothered checkmate he was trying to go for.
With that rook in position, none of his moves were going to be good.
"I’ve lost." He pushed down his King piece, a move that signified surrender.
The other protagonist always wins, but he somehow always loses.
Does that even make any sense?
"That was a difficult match." George smiled lightly.
"Difficult? You absolutely destroyed him!" Samantha chimed in and teased.
"Is that really what you thought?"
"Is that not true?"
George chuckled in amusement and glanced at Ray.
"Why don’t you have a match with uhh...?" It was only now that George realized he hadn’t actually gotten his name.
"Raymond is the Young Master’s name," Belva said.
"Oh, Raymond." George nodded and glanced at Samantha.
"Broke Sam!" Ray instantly introduced himself on her behalf; his eyes remained focused on the chessboard where he lost.
"I’m not Broke Sam!" Samantha argued and introduced herself. "I’m Samantha, and no, do not call me Sam. Say my full Samantha name."
"Understood, Samantha."
Although a bit confused by their relationship, George didn’t press on and suggested that she play a game with Ray. "You should have a go with Raymond."
"I don’t want to be a bully, though." Samantha curled her lips upward. She was confident that Ray could never defeat her in chess.
"She’s a Broke Sam and a coward." Ray yawned and began picking up a fork to eat some of the food that Belva ordered for him.
"Who’s a coward?" Samantha was instantly ticked off and riled up when he called her a coward. She despised being called that word the most because of a past history.
"Since you want to lose more badly, then so be it!" She snorted and sat opposite the chair.
She then began to set up the black pieces, which was an indirect sign that she was going to give the white pieces to Ray.
To those unaware, the white pieces would have the first turn and didn’t even bother asking why that was the case.
Maybe travel back to the past and ask those rule makers, but for now, Ray was focused on giving Samantha a check of reality.
"Are you ready, Broke Sam?" Ray stretched his neck and asked.
"I’ve been ready." Her eyes flared up; her intent was obvious. She wanted to destroy Ray completely in this chess game.
Only George watched silently in amusement.
’She’d better not think this is really regular chess.’ He thought to himself. To the outsiders spectating their game, they would have thought it was just regular chess.
However, the truth was far from that.
This was a magic chessboard embedded with a fourth-circle magic formation.
Its design was so intricate that there were only a few of them available for sale.
After all, the magic chessboard consumed the player’s mana and concentration to place their pieces.
At the same time, the piece itself would have a magical battle against the opposing piece to fully train a player’s mental combat.
And to move even a single piece required a ton of concentration.
The fact that Ray was able to play against him repeatedly, who was clearly playing for the first time, made George respect him and understand he couldn’t take it easy.
’That last game was evident that he was going to win the next match if we had continued.’ George silently deduced. He was certain the two women were confused why he didn’t capture a free Bishop but moved his Rook instead.
It wasn’t that he missed the move, but it was because the Rook was required to stop his growing Knight from forking his pieces in a long-range manner.
They could have moved the pieces many times more than their original square, but they somehow have a silent consensus to not do that.
And that silent consensus was broken when the opponent changed.
Sure enough, Ray suddenly held his Queen piece and directly took out Samantha’s Queen piece.
"What the hell??!" Samantha slammed her palm on the table and hissed.
"Checkmate, Broke Sam!" Ray laughed with a huge smirk.
