She looked back at the hyenas, who were staring at her with profound horror, their shivering bodies partially submerged in the freezing subterranean pool. The damp, heavy air of the cavern clung to them, making every breath a visible plume of white mist. They had been paid a handsome sum of gold by the Snake Tribe to kill a naive, human girl who was supposedly trying to play politics in a world ruled by beasts. It was supposed to be easy money. A quick assassination in the dark. Instead, they had crossed paths with a warmongering tactician who was about to orchestrate the downfall of a regional superpower just to prove a point.

Kaya paced slowly along the rocky edge of the water. The rhythmic crunch of her heavy leather boots against the stone echoed like a ticking clock in the minds of the terrified mercenaries.

"And as for you boys," Kaya said, her voice dripping with a mock sweetness that felt far more dangerous than outright rage. She tilted her head, her gaze piercing through the dim, flickering torchlight of the cave. "You’re going to go back to Lord Siss. You’re going to tell him that you barely escaped with your lives, and that the Free Clan’s army is ten times larger than he originally feared. You’re going to make him panic."

The hyenas nodded frantically, their teeth chattering. They were willing to agree to absolutely anything if it meant getting out of the freezing water and away from this terrifying human woman. They splashed weakly, their swollen faces and bruised bodies a testament to how completely they had been outmatched.

Kaya flashed them a blindingly bright smile, the kind of smile that didn’t reach her cold, calculating eyes.

Veer stepped forward from the shadows, his expression completely deadpan. "Now, give them a little bit of poison."

The hyenas froze. The frantic splashing stopped instantly. One of them, a burly beastman with a nasty gash across his cheek, sputtered, his eyes wide with unadulterated panic. "Poison? Why? Why would you need poison?! We are definitely going to follow your orders! We swore it!"

Kaya looked at them, her smile never wavering for a fraction of a second. She crouched down near the water’s edge, resting her arms on her knees as if speaking to a group of unruly children. "Ah, what can I do? Some bastards think they can betray me, you see. They say ’yes’ to my face while they’re trapped in this cave, and then the second they are out of my sight, they change their tune. It’s a matter of mitigating liabilities."

She nodded at Veer. Reaching into the deep folds of his heavy dark coat, Veer pulled out a massive, blue-tinted bamboo bottle. It was sealed tightly with a wax-covered cork.

The hyenas stared at the container in sheer disbelief. When someone mentioned poison, you usually expected a tiny, delicate ceramic vial, a small glass dropper, or a hollowed-out ring. You expected something discreet. You did not expect a heavy, thick bamboo jug big enough to hold a week’s worth of ale. The sheer volume of it implied an industrial level of execution.

"After all," Kaya said innocently, dusting off her hands as she stood back up. "We can’t take any chances, right? Veer, deal with them. Put it in their mouths."

The hyenas immediately tried to thrash and rebel. They scrambled backward in the water, trying to find purchase on the slick, mossy rocks, but they were exhausted and utterly cornered. Veer’s Vulture tribesmen stepped in with brutal efficiency. They hauled the sputtering mercenaries half-out of the water, prying their powerful jaws open with calloused hands, and forcefully poured the thick, bitter liquid down their throats. The hyenas gagged and coughed, their eyes watering from the horrific, earthy taste, completely powerless to stop it from sliding down their gullets.

Kaya watched them calmly, her posture relaxed but her mind sharp. "If you dare to go against me, this poison will kill you within seconds. It rests dormant until a specific trigger activates it. It is foolproof."

The youngest hyena, wiping his mouth with a trembling, wet hand, dared to speak up. He was shivering violently, his eyes darting between Kaya and Veer. "But... how would you even know if we lied or betrayed you? You won’t be there."

Kaya looked at him, a dangerous, gleaming light flashing in her eyes. "You’re really smart, aren’t you?"

The young hyena’s ears perked up for a fraction of a second. He genuinely thought he had found a loophole in her grand plan. If they were miles away, how could she possibly trigger the poison? But Kaya’s next words froze the blood in his veins faster than the icy water ever could.

"Oh, it’s nothing complicated," Kaya said breezily. She raised her hand gracefully and snapped her fingers, the sharp sound echoing through the cavern. "I’ll just show you."

At her signal, one of Veer’s Vulture subordinates stumbled forward into the torchlight. He was trembling violently, his eyes darting around in absolute terror, looking every bit like a man who knew he was walking to his own execution.

"Put the poison in his mouth," Kaya ordered, her tone shifting to ice.

Veer stepped up without a word of protest. He grabbed the trembling Vulture by the chin, tilted his head back, and poured a generous, overflowing dose of the blue liquid down the man’s throat. He then leaned in close, his voice cold and authoritative, and gave the man a clear, simple instruction: "Say that hyenas are geniuses."

The Vulture swallowed hard, his Adam’s apple bobbing. He was visibly shaking, sweat beading on his forehead despite the chill in the air. He opened his mouth, hesitating for a agonizing second, and then stammered, "The... the hyenas are fools!"

The reaction was instantaneous.

The Vulture’s eyes rolled entirely back into his head, exposing the whites. He violently lurched forward, splattering a massive mouthful of dark, viscous blood onto the cavern floor. He clutched his chest as if his heart were trying to burst through his ribcage, and collapsed heavily onto the stone. He thrashed wildly on the ground, screaming in sheer, unadulterated agony. His limbs contorted at unnatural angles, his fingernails scraping desperately against the rock as if he were dying in the absolute worst pain imaginable.

A few seconds later, his body seized one last time. He let out one final, ragged gasp, a horrific death rattle that echoed through the silence, and stopped breathing entirely.

Dead.

The hyenas watched the gruesome display in absolute, trembling horror. The sheer violence of the poison was unimaginable. The fact that the man had died simply for speaking a contradiction was a level of dark magic or alchemy they couldn’t comprehend. Terrified they might accidentally trigger it themselves if they even thought a rebellious thought, they scrambled out of the water and onto their hands and knees, bowing so hard and so frantically their foreheads hit the hard stone floor with audible thuds.

"We will do as you wish! We will do exactly as you wish!" they wailed in unison, their voices breaking into sobs of sheer terror.

Kaya casually drew her steel hunting knife from her belt. She twirled the blade effortlessly between her nimble fingers, the torchlight glinting off the razor-sharp edge.
