"Oh, Cutie," she sighed, relaxing slightly at the sight of the giant bear beastman. "You’re back."
Cutie gave a low, rumbling grunt, nudging the woven basket of fresh blueberries closer to her on the table.
Veer crossed his arms, looking down at her expectantly. "You should eat something," he said smoothly. "You look hungry."
Kaya frowned, her eyebrows knitting together. Where the heck do I look hungry? she thought, mildly offended by the assumption.
But just as she was about to snap a sarcastic retort, the sweet, earthy smell of the fresh fruit hit her nose, and her stomach betrayed her with a loud, hollow rumble. She paused, staring at the berries. Well, you couldn’t really argue with biology. If perfectly good food was sitting right in front of you after a long day of interrogating assassins, the only logical thing to do was shut up and eat it.
The food laid out before them was practically endless. Even though this was just a casual meal in a cave, it looked like a royal feast. Everything here was completely natural, and because they had gathered it in bulk, the spices and ingredients were plentiful. Over the past few days, Kaya had helped the beastmen recognize several edible herbs and spices, adding to the ones they already knew.
Because of that, her meal was far from lacking. Right now, there was freshly roasted chicken, hearty mutton, and a wide spread of other foraged goods. It wasn’t prepared exactly the same way she used to eat it back in her modern world, but it was undeniably delicious. Maybe it was precisely because it was completely natural—no preservatives, no artificial chemicals, no strange medicines pumped into the livestock. It just tasted pure.
Kaya tore a chunk of meat off a roasted chicken leg and popped it into her mouth. Damn, it was incredible. It was so tender she felt like it was practically melting on her tongue.
Beside her, Veer was, of course, eating his meat completely raw. He had tried eating cooked meat with her a few times to be polite, but his Vulture instincts always won out, and he still vastly preferred the taste and texture of raw, bloody cuts.
As for Cutie, he was happily munching on some blueberries and wild greens. Even though he was a rabbit beastman and was biologically capable of digesting meat if he really had to, he still heavily preferred his vegetables. Because of their dietary preferences, almost all of the perfectly roasted meat had been made specifically for Kaya. She reached for some of the mutton next, because when you were as hungry as she was, you certainly couldn’t be a chooser.
As she chewed, a sudden, intense craving hit her. Kaya looked down at the roasted feast and sighed wistfully. "Man... I really want to eat Beggar’s Chicken."
Hearing that, both Veer and Cutie completely stopped eating. They slowly tilted their heads, staring at her in profound confusion.
Veer swallowed his bite of raw meat, his brow furrowing with deep concern. "Wife, don’t worry. Even if I were to lose everything and become a literal beggar in the streets, I would never let you sink so low as to eat beggar food. Why the heck do you want a beggar’s chicken? Do you need me to go out and beg for chicken from others just to satisfy a craving? Why? We have perfectly good roosters and chickens right here."
Cutie paused his chewing, looking at her with wide, serious eyes. He nodded his head in solemn agreement with Veer and let out a soft grunt. *"The food they throw out for beggars is not good,"* he seemed to say.
Hearing their absolute sincerity, Kaya just closed her eyes and slapped a hand over her own forehead.
"I didn’t say I want to *be* a beggar!" Kaya groaned, rubbing her temples. "I told you, I want to eat the *dish* called Beggar’s Chicken! It’s a recipe, not a lifestyle!"
"It’s a cooking method," Kaya explained, waving a chicken bone in the air to emphasize her point. "You take a whole chicken, stuff it with aromatic herbs, wrap it tightly in large lotus leaves, and then you pack a thick, heavy layer of mud or clay all around it. After that, you bury the whole thing directly under the hot coals of a fire and let it bake for hours."
Veer stared at her, his jaw slightly slack. He looked down at the pristine, golden-roasted chicken leg currently in her hand, then back up to her face. "You... you want to take perfectly clean, beautifully prepared meat, slather it in wet dirt, and bury it in a hole in the ground?"
Cutie stopped mid-bite, a single blueberry hovering just inches from his mouth. His large ears twitched violently as he processed the concept of putting dirt anywhere near their dinner. Even for a beastman who spent his entire life in the wild, the idea of intentionally encasing food in mud sounded completely unhinged.
"The clay bakes into a hard shell," Kaya defended herself, her mouth watering just thinking about the dish. "It seals all the moisture, juices, and flavors completely inside. When you crack the shell open, the meat is so incredibly tender it literally falls off the bone. It is high-class cuisine where I come from, I swear!"
Veer let out a low, amused chuckle. He leaned in closer, a playful, dangerous glint returning to his predatory eyes. "Wife, just a few minutes ago you were looking at me like I was a walking plague vector because I don’t wash my hands in boiled water before tearing into a carcass. And now, you’re telling me you want to eat dirt-baked poultry? Your human brain is a truly fascinating, contradictory place."
"The intense heat of the fire completely sterilizes the outer clay layer, you uncultured bird," Kaya shot back, throwing an irritated glare his way, though she couldn’t entirely hide the small smirk tugging at the corner of her lips. "And for the last time, stop calling me wife. I told you, the last guy who did that is buried ten feet deep."
"Which is exactly the depth required for this beggar chicken recipe of yours, isn’t it?" Veer teased, completely unbothered by her threat. "It seems we are perfectly aligned."
Kaya rolled her eyes and turned away from him, deciding it was best to completely ignore his shameless flirting before she ended up throwing her actual dinner at his face.
Cutie, however, seemed genuinely intrigued by the mechanics of the recipe. He tilted his massive head, looking past the warmth of the fire toward the cave entrance, where the heavy mud from the recent rains was still thick and clay-like. He let out a low, deep grunt, pointing a massive claw toward the wet earth outside.
"We have large green leaves," Cutie muttered, his rumbling voice vibrating through the stone cave floor. "And we have plenty of thick mud by the riverbed. Tomorrow, I can dig the roasting pit."
Kaya blinked, pleasantly surprised by the giant rabbit beastman’s sudden enthusiasm. "Really? You’ll help me make it?"
Cutie gave a slow, firm nod, popping the hovering blueberry into his mouth. If making this strange mud-chicken made Kaya happy and kept her from looking so stressed out about the local cleanliness, he was more than willing to dig as many holes as she needed.
