The sheer mass of the Snake Lord blotted out the light as he plummeted toward the treasury floor.

Veer’s head snapped up. His predatory instincts screamed at him. He didn’t try to block or parry; he knew better than to argue with gravity and three tons of falling muscle. He abandoned his kill, throwing himself backward and tucking into a desperate, evasive roll.

Lord Siss hit the floor like a falling meteor.

The impact was deafening. The polished obsidian marble, thick enough to withstand a battering ram, instantly cratered under his immense weight. A violent shockwave of dust, shattered stone, and crushed gold coins blasted outward, knocking Kaya clean off her feet and sending her skidding across the slick floor.

Before the dust cloud could even settle, a massive, iridescent black coil whipped out of the smoke like a striking whip.

Veer brought his twin blades up in a desperate cross-guard just in time. The thick snake tail slammed into the dark steel with the force of a runaway boulder. A blinding shower of sparks exploded into the air as metal ground against diamond-hard scales. Veer gritted his teeth, the muscles in his arms bulging as his boots carved deep, grinding trenches into the marble floor. He was pushed back ten, twenty, thirty feet by the sheer, overwhelming physical power of the ancient beastman, completely unable to halt the momentum.

"A fast bird," Lord Siss hissed, his beautiful, flawless upper body gliding effortlessly out of the dust, "is still just a bird."

Lord Siss didn’t fight like his guards. He didn’t use a spear or a sword. His entire body was a perfectly evolved weapon. He lunged forward with terrifying, blinding speed, his pale hands extended. His fingernails elongated into jagged, venom-dripping talons.

Veer violently twisted his body, barely dodging a swipe that tore a massive gash through the heavy fabric of his coat. He countered instantly, stepping into the Snake Lord’s guard and driving his curved blade directly toward Siss’s chest.

’CLANG.’

The blade struck true, but it didn’t pierce the skin. Beneath the pale, flawless human skin of Siss’s upper body lay a hidden, microscopic layer of indestructible keratin scales. Veer’s blade bounced off, vibrating violently in his hand, leaving nothing but a faint white scratch on the Snake Lord’s chest.

Siss smiled, a cold, mocking expression, and backhanded the Vulture chief.

The blow sent Veer crashing through a heavy wooden display table, splintering it into kindling. He hit the obsidian wall hard enough to crack it, groaning as the air was forced from his lungs.

"Veer!" Kaya yelled, scrambling to her feet.

"Worry about yourself, human!" Siss snarled, turning his glowing amber eyes toward her.

But before the giant serpent could slither in her direction, a deafening, feral roar shook the room. Cutie charged. The giant bear-rabbit beastman, ignoring the paralytic venom burning through his shoulder, swung the massive iron candelabra with every single ounce of raw, unadulterated strength he possessed, aiming directly for Lord Siss’s head.

Lord Siss didn’t dodge. He simply raised one pale hand.

’CRASH.’

The thousand-pound iron candelabra slammed into Siss’s palm. The heavy metal instantly buckled and bent around the Snake Lord’s hand, but Siss himself didn’t budge a single inch. Cutie’s eyes widened in profound shock. The physical strength of the ancient serpent was completely incomprehensible.

"Stupid, lumbering livestock," Siss whispered.

With a flick of his wrist, Siss ripped the mangled iron from Cutie’s grasp. His massive black tail coiled like a spring and lashed out, striking the giant beastman square in the chest. Cutie was launched backward like a broken toy, crashing violently into a pile of treasure chests. He didn’t get back up. The combination of the brutal impact and the venom circulating in his blood finally paralyzed his massive limbs, leaving him conscious but entirely immobile.

Kaya backed away, her heart hammering against her ribs.

This was bad. This was exceptionally, catastrophically bad. Lord Siss was entirely immune to regular blades, faster than Veer, and physically stronger than a literal bear. Trying to fight him head-on was suicide.

She needed to change the rules of the fight.

Her eyes darted around the chaotic treasury. The dead guards. The scattered gold. The broken floor. And finally, the walls.

The heavy, emerald-green torches.

’He’s cold-blooded,’ Kaya’s mind raced, recalling her own tactical planning from hours ago. ’He’s fast and strong right now because this room is a giant, insulated oven. It’s heated by dozens of massive torches.’

Lord Siss’s pale, flawless face twisted into a sadistic grin as he slithered slowly toward her. His massive body blocked the only exit. "I told my guards to cripple you, little tactician. But looking at you now, trembling in the wreckage of your grand plan, I think I will simply swallow you whole."

"You talk too much," Kaya snapped.

She didn’t run away from him. Instead, she sprinted laterally, channeling that strange, weightless power into her legs. She launched herself fifteen feet into the air, completely bypassing Siss’s striking range, and landed squarely on one of the high, narrow wall sconces holding a massive green torch.

Siss laughed, a cold, mocking sound. "Do you think climbing the walls will save you? I am a serpent. I can reach the ceiling without leaving the floor."

He reared back, his jaw unhinging to reveal massive, terrifying fangs dripping with acidic venom, preparing to strike her off the wall.

"I’m not trying to hide!" Kaya yelled. She raised her heavy leather boot and violently kicked the iron sconce off the wall.

The massive torch plummeted to the ground, shattering against the marble. The magical green flame sputtered and instantly died out, plunging that corner of the room into deep shadow.

Kaya didn’t stop. She leaped from sconce to sconce with impossible, gravity-defying agility, kicking, smashing, and destroying every single heat source she could reach. One by one, the emerald fires were extinguished.

"Stop her!" Lord Siss roared, suddenly realizing what she was doing. The ancient serpent lunged upward, his jaws snapping shut mere inches from Kaya’s boots as she vaulted across the room.

But as Siss focused his entirely on Kaya, he forgot the most important rule of the wild.

Never turn your back on a Vulture.

Veer exploded from the rubble of the broken table. He didn’t use his blades this time. Instead, he scooped up one of the heavy, venom-tipped spears dropped by the dead guards. He sprinted silently across the room, leaped off a pile of gold coins, and drove the spear with all his might directly into the thick, fleshy joint where Lord Siss’s human torso met his snake coils.

The spearhead, laced with the Snake Tribe’s own potent paralytic venom, sank deep into the unarmored tissue.

Lord Siss let out an ear-splitting, agonizing shriek. The sound was so loud it physically rattled the gold coins on the floor. He violently thrashed his massive body, throwing Veer across the room, but the damage was done. The spear remained lodged deep in his spine.

As the last emerald torch was kicked from the wall by Kaya, the treasury was plunged into the freezing, ambient temperature of the pre-dawn canyon. The cold air rushed in from the shattered balconies.

Between the sudden, drastic drop in temperature and the massive dose of his own tribe’s venom coursing through his veins, the invincible Snake Lord suddenly faltered.
