Kaya immediately put Veer in charge of the military transition. The Vulture chief was entirely in his element. He prowled through the canyon with a terrifying, predatory grace, organizing the surrendered Snake guards into functional squads and integrating them with the fifty original recruits. He stripped the upper-echelon commanders of their venom-tipped weapons, replacing them with standard steel, and established a strict, rotating perimeter watch. No one dared to question him. The fresh blood still staining his dark coat and the memory of the massacre in the treasury ensured absolute compliance.
Cutie, meanwhile, was appointed as the Master of the Treasury and Logistics, a title he accepted with a happy, rumbling grunt. He spent the morning dragging the shattered chests of gold into a secure vault, throwing out the acid-melted coins, and taking inventory of the canyon’s massive food stores.
As for Kaya, her first decree as the supreme leader of the newly established Free Clan was incredibly simple, yet completely non-negotiable.
She demanded a bath.
And not just a splash of cold river water. She ordered the Snake servants to fill the late Lord Siss’s massive, sunken marble bathing pool with boiling hot water, scented oils, and every cleansing herb they could find in the apothecary.
For a full hour, Kaya sank beneath the steaming, fragrant water, scrubbing her skin until it was raw. She washed away the dirt of the cave, the foul-smelling swamp mud, the highly toxic acid fumes, and the cold, sticky reptilian blood of the guards she had killed. As the hot water seeped into her aching, bruised muscles, the sheer adrenaline that had been keeping her upright for the last forty-eight hours finally crashed, leaving her feeling like a hollowed-out shell.
"You know," a smooth, dangerously amused voice echoed from the other side of the heavy silk partition separating the bathing pool from the dressing room. "If you stay in there any longer, you are going to dissolve, wife. And considering we just killed a snake who tried to dissolve us with acid, that feels highly counterproductive."
Kaya groaned, leaning her head back against the smooth marble edge of the pool. "Veer, if you peek around that curtain, I swear to all the gods of this primitive world, I will drown you in this tub."
"I am a gentleman," Veer replied smoothly, though she could practically hear the smirk in his voice. "I am merely standing guard. You did just violently overthrow a dictator. It is entirely possible some fiercely loyal assassin might try to slip in here and avenge him."
"If a fiercely loyal assassin wanted to avenge him, they wouldn’t have knelt in the mud crying this morning," Kaya shot back, dragging a wet cloth over her face. "How are the troops holding up?"
"The transition is complete," Veer reported, the amusement fading into a sharp, tactical professionalism. "The Python commander—his name is Sarn, by the way—has officially sworn a blood oath to the Free Clan. The rank-and-file soldiers are terrified of you, but they are also incredibly relieved. Apparently, Lord Siss had a habit of eating his own guards when he got bored or hungry. By comparison, you asking them to simply stand guard and not eat each other makes you the most benevolent ruler they have ever had."
"The bar is on the floor," Kaya muttered.
"However," Veer continued, his silhouette shifting behind the silk curtain. "We need to talk about logistics. You bluffed your way into conquering a fortress, Kaya. But a fortress is a living, breathing beast. The Venom-tooth Canyons house nearly two thousand beastmen, counting the soldiers, the servants, and the civilian merchants who live in the outer rings. They need to be fed, paid, and organized. And more importantly..." He paused, his voice dropping slightly. "Word is going to spread. Fast."
Kaya opened her eyes, staring at the high, vaulted ceiling. "The other tribes."
"Exactly. The West was Lord Siss’s undisputed territory. The moment the Central Plains or the Northern Wolf Kings hear that a human girl decapitated the Snake Lord and stole his fortress, they aren’t going to send fruit baskets. They are going to send armies. Real armies. To test us, to break us, and to steal this canyon."
Kaya sighed heavily, pulling herself out of the hot water. She wrapped a thick, incredibly soft towel around herself and stepped behind the partition. She found a fresh set of clothes waiting for her—dark, tailored leather trousers, a soft linen tunic, and a heavy, fur-lined cloak that looked suspiciously like it had been tailored for a noblewoman.
She dressed quickly, strapping her hunting knife back to her thigh. It was a comforting, grounding weight against her leg. She stepped out from behind the curtain, tossing her wet hair over her shoulder.
Veer was leaning against the obsidian wall, his arms crossed. He had finally washed the blood off himself as well, his dark hair damp, his twin curved blades polished to a mirror shine. He looked at her, his predatory eyes scanning her up and down before settling on her face.
"You fought well in the treasury," Veer said quietly, dropping the playful banter. "You slid under Siss’s claws faster than any human should be able to move. And yesterday, you scaled a hundred-foot sheer wall with three jumps."
Kaya froze. She knew Veer was observant, but she had hoped the chaos of the battle had masked her impossible movements.
"I don’t know what it is," Kaya admitted, deciding that lying to the Vulture chief was a terrible tactical decision. "Since I woke up in this world, I’ve felt... lighter. Like gravity doesn’t pull on me the same way it pulls on everything else. I can jump higher, move faster. But I’m not physically stronger. Cutie could still snap me in half with two fingers."
Veer nodded slowly, stepping closer to her. "The beast world changes things. It adapts foreign elements to survive. A human without fangs, claws, or magic is nothing but prey here. It seems the world decided to give you the one thing prey needs most to survive."
"Which is?" Kaya asked.
"Evasion," Veer said softly. "The ability to never be caught."
He reached out, lightly brushing a stray, damp lock of hair out of her eyes. The gesture was surprisingly gentle, a sharp contrast to the brutal killer he was in combat. "But you aren’t acting like prey, Kaya. You are acting like an apex predator. You took a defensive evasion ability and used it to gut a three-hundred-year-old monster. You are dangerous. And the rest of the continent is going to figure that out very soon."
"Then we better make sure we are ready when they do," Kaya said, holding his gaze. She stepped past him, pulling the heavy cloak tight around her shoulders. "Assemble the council. It’s time to lay down the law."
An hour later, Kaya sat on a high-backed wooden chair at the head of the long obsidian table in the war room. She had explicitly refused to sit on Lord Siss’s massive golden throne, declaring it entirely too tacky for her tastes, and had ordered Cutie to melt it down to mint fresh coins.
The council consisted of an incredibly bizarre mix of individuals.
