"The bird is grounded. The bear is bleeding. And the little human... has nowhere left to run."

Kaya stopped struggling.

She looked at Siss, then at Cutie, who was swaying on his feet, losing massive amounts of blood from the acidic burns and deep slashes covering his body. She looked out over the burning canyon, listening to the screams of her people.

She had lost.

Despite all her modern knowledge, all her tactical brilliance, and all her arrogant confidence, she had fundamentally underestimated the sheer, horrific resilience of the beast world. She had played a game of thrones with monsters, and the monsters had won.

But as Kaya looked at the mutated, gloating face of Lord Siss, the profound despair in her chest suddenly hardened into a cold, unbreakable spike of pure spite.

She reached down to her thigh. Her hunting knife was gone, lost somewhere in the subterranean stairwell. She had no weapons. She had no army.

"Cutie," Kaya whispered, her voice completely devoid of emotion.

Cutie let out a weak, rattling grunt, his massive body trembling.

"The foundation," Kaya said softly, her eyes locked on Siss.

When Kaya had occupied the canyon, she had studied the blueprints of the central keep. It was a massive, towering structure of heavy obsidian. But it was built on a cantilever system overhanging the deep gorge of the canyon river. It was designed to look imposing, but structurally, it relied entirely on four massive, central load-bearing pillars on the lower balconies.

And for the last hour, the Rot-weavers had been spraying those lower pillars with highly concentrated, structural-melting acid.

The tower was already groaning. The stone beneath their feet was vibrating with the telltale, terrifying frequency of impending catastrophic failure.

"You think you won," Kaya said, stepping out from behind Cutie. She stood entirely unarmed, her crimson tunic torn and stained with soot and blood. She looked at Lord Siss with an expression of absolute, unyielding contempt. "You think you took my fortress back. But you didn’t."

Siss slithered forward, his talons extending. "Empty words... from a dying ape."

"They aren’t empty," Kaya said coldly. "You brought acid-spitting spiders into a fortress built on sheer cliffs. You didn’t conquer my home, Siss. You just undermined your own."

Siss’s amber eyes narrowed in confusion.

Kaya didn’t wait for him to understand. She turned to Cutie, who was watching her with absolute, unwavering trust.

"Hit the floor, Cutie," Kaya ordered. "Hit it with everything you have left."

Cutie didn’t hesitate, and he didn’t question her. He was dying. His body was failing. But he loved this strange, tiny human who had taught him how to bake chicken in the mud and treated him like family instead of a monster.

The giant bear-rabbit let out one final, earth-shattering roar. He raised both of his massive, blood-soaked fists high above his head, channeling every single ounce of his remaining life force, his sheer kinetic mass, and his unadulterated rage into a single strike.

He brought both fists smashing down onto the obsidian floor of the high balcony.

The impact was like a localized earthquake.

The stone floor, already critically weakened by the acid melting the supports directly beneath them, instantly shattered.

Lord Siss shrieked in sudden, panicked realization as a massive web of cracks violently spider-webbed across the entire balcony. The structural integrity of the central tower completely failed.

With a deafening, catastrophic roar of grinding stone and tearing metal, the entire highest tier of the central keep broke away from the cliff face.

Gravity instantly took hold.

The floor beneath Kaya vanished.

She was plunged into a terrifying, absolute freefall. The wind roared in her ears, violently whipping her hair and her torn cloak around her. Massive chunks of obsidian, heavy iron braziers, and shattered wooden beams tumbled through the dark air alongside her.

She looked up, the world spinning in a chaotic blur. She saw Lord Siss thrashing wildly in the air, his massive pale tail desperately trying to coil around a falling pillar, his amber eyes wide with the realization that his grand victory had just turned into a mutual suicide pact.

Kaya closed her eyes.

The wind tore the breath from her lungs. The ground was hundreds of feet below. Even with her strange agility, she couldn’t fly. She couldn’t survive a fall of this magnitude.

She thought about her ledgers. She thought about the water filtration system she would never finish building. She thought about the warm, spiced wine she had drank on the balcony just hours ago, feeling like she was on top of the world.

But mostly, she thought about Veer. She thought about his dark, captivated smile, the arrogant swagger of his walk, and the horrific, sickening sound of his wings breaking. She had failed him. She had dragged him into this, and she was going to die without ever getting to tell him that she actually, genuinely cared about him.

’I’m sorry,’ Kaya thought, letting her body go limp in the rushing wind. ’I’m so sorry.’

She waited for the bone-shattering impact. She waited for the darkness to take her.

But the impact didn’t come from the ground.

Suddenly, a massive, warm weight slammed into her from the side.

Kaya’s eyes snapped open.

Thick, heavy arms wrapped around her waist, pulling her violently against a broad, solid chest. She looked up, her vision blurred by the tearing wind and her own tears.

It was Veer.

The Vulture chief was falling right alongside her. His face was pale, covered in blood and soot. His eyes were wide with a frantic, desperate focus. And dragging limply behind his back were the mangled, broken, ruined remains of his magnificent wings.

He couldn’t fly. He had ripped himself free from the webs, ignoring the excruciating, blinding agony of his shattered bones, and he had thrown himself off the cliff edge directly into the abyss, just to reach her.

"Veer!" Kaya screamed over the roaring wind, her hands desperately grabbing the lapels of his torn leather coat. "What are you doing?! You can’t fly!"

Veer didn’t answer. He just tightened his grip around her, burying his face into her neck, shielding her body entirely with his own. He was positioning himself to take the absolute brunt of the impact. He was going to let the ground pulverize his body into dust just to give her a fractional chance of surviving the fall.

Before Kaya could even process the heartbreaking reality of his sacrifice, a massive shadow eclipsed the moonlight above them.

Cutie, tumbling through the debris of the collapsing tower, reached out with his massive, bleeding arms. The giant bear-rabbit beastman wrapped his enormous limbs entirely around both Kaya and Veer, pulling them into a tight, protective ball against his thick chest.

Cutie let out a soft, rumbling purr, resting his massive chin on the top of Kaya’s head. He closed his eyes, accepting his fate. He was the largest. He was the strongest. He would be the outer shield.

They were plummeting toward the jagged rocks of the canyon river. A broken bird, a dying bear, and a magicless human, holding onto each other in the dark.

Kaya squeezed her eyes shut, burying her face into Veer’s chest, her hands gripping his coat so hard her knuckles ached. The roar of the wind was deafening. The jagged rocks rushed up to meet them.

’One.’

’Two.’

’Three.’
