"What if the Second Consort isn’t the only culprit here?" Eren went on, his voice calm, and brutal reality.
"What if there are so many playing a huge game, where every player has their own agenda, and your mother’s long-term public execution planning was merely an opening ploy? A disposable piece removed from the board... with every thread tying straight back to The Substance?"
Seraphina sat entirely paralyzed.
Her red eyes stared blankly at the wood of the dining table, her pupils trembling as cold beads of sweat formed on her pale temples. Her chest heaved in shallow, ragged gasps as her mind violently stitched the fragmented political landscape together.
The pieces fell into place with clarity.
There was only one man in the entire empire who held the absolute power, the sociopathic ambition, and the ruthless indifference required to orchestrate such a monstrous game.
The single person Seraphina despised more than anything else in existence.
Her hands began to shake.
Aria reacted immediately. The blue-haired heiress leaned across the table, her golden eyes wide as she grabbed Seraphina’s trembling hand, anchoring her friend before she completely shattered.
"I thought... I truly believed he couldn’t sink any lower," Seraphina whispered, her voice cracking into a fractured rasp. "He betrayed my mother. He usurped her rightful birthright of the throne, took another woman to his bed, stripped my mother of her authority, and discarded her into an isolated annex the second he secured his grip over the throne and the Imperial Council..."
A ragged sob caught in her throat. Seraphina clamped a trembling hand over her mouth.
"Seraphina, look at me! What are you talking about?!" Aria urged, squeezing her hand tighter. "Who are you seeing in this?!"
"What else does that monster want from us now?!" Seraphina suddenly screamed, looking directly at Eren in desperate fury.
"Please, Volsver..." Seraphina muttered, her eyes shaking as she pleaded for a reprieve. "Tell me you’re just making another one of your disgusting, tasteless jokes! Tell me this is just another ridiculous theory! This isn’t funny, Eren... damn it, it’s not funny!"
Eren didn’t offer a witty joke. He didn’t drop a sarcastic deflection.
He simply held her gaze with silence, allowing her to realize the brutal truth.
"DAMN HIM!"
Seraphina slammed her fist onto the table, rattling the tea set with a scream of distress.
"Sera, stop! Breathe, damn it!" Aria grabbed her shoulders, pulling the princess against her chest to physically restrain her from destroying the room.
Eren remained calm in his chair, quietly watching the princess crash out.
He understood her pain.
In fact, her entire tragedy was one of the reasons that drove his intervention in this game. Seraphina was a woman who was calm, impossibly calculative, trusting no one, and treating the entire world like a chessboard where she was always ten moves ahead.
Yet her composure consistently shattered for only one person in existence: an emotionally broken mother who barely even spoke to her anymore.
She was violently fixated on seizing the throne not for personal glory, but to drag it back and place the crown at her mother’s feet. It was the desperate attempt of a child who had never received love from either parent. In the original game canon, Seraphina’s blind devotion drove her straight into a horrific transformation, leaving Alice to handle things caused by the greedy rats.
"Eren! Don’t just sit there like a useless mannequin, do something!" Aria lashed out as she held the sobbing princess tight against her chest.
Eren sighed, resting his chin in his palm. "Let her do what she wants, Aria. If demolishing my furniture somehow causes the Emperor to trip, fall, and lose his grip on the throne, I’ll happily let her do it."
"Idiot! Either actually help her right now or shut the hell up!" Aria hissed in irritation.
Before the villainess could throw a teacup at his face, Seraphina calmed down.
The white-haired princess straightened, staring down at the jagged wood her fist had punched into the table.
Eren swirled the cold remains of his tea, looking at her downcast face.
"Why..." Seraphina choked out, her voice barely a whisper. "Why is everyone in this rotten empire against her?"
She gripped the edges of the table.
"What crime did my mother ever commit against them?!" Seraphina rasped, her eyes burning. "All she ever wanted was a simple, happy life! She defied her own royal father and married a mere count’s son just because he showered her with warmth and pretended to love her! And the second he climbed to power on her back, he locked her away in the dark..."
"Tell me, Volsver... is loving someone unconditionally the unforgivable sin she committed to deserve all of this?!"
"No," Eren replied immediately.
The single word made both beauties freeze and turn their gaze toward him in stunned silence.
Eren sat entirely still, his face etched with an unusual, thoughtful sincerity, his blue eyes reflecting the dim lights overhead with unwavering clarity.
"Loving someone unconditionally is never a sin, Seraphina," Eren spoke, his deep voice carrying a quiet warmth. "To love without reserve or calculation is a rare and beautiful blessing—one of the few genuinely pure things this rotten world has to offer."
She looked at his calm blue eyes. There was no mockery in his expression, no arrogant superiority—just a sincerity that soothed her rage.
"The only sinner in that story is the cowardly parasite who weaponized that devotion for his own selfish ascension. Your mother is not a criminal, Princess. She was simply an innocent soul trapped in the web of a predator who lacked the humanity to appreciate what he was given. And I happen to despise parasites just as much as you do."
Eren leaned forward over the fractured table, offering her a steady hand without forcing her to take it.
"Which is precisely why I chose to step into this war with you," Eren murmured, giving her a reassuring smile. "So take a breath, my ferocious Princess. Calm that brilliant, terrifying mind of yours, and tell me: what do you want for yourself? Whatever you choose... I’ll ensure you see it through to the end."
