Chapter 108- Protagonist Things (Part 2)

"What... the hell..." Rize muttered under his breath as he stopped and watched the scenes before his eyes. An endless stream of people walked into the massive rally. The numbers seemed almost incomprehensible at first glance, and the noise was so loud that nobody could even hear themselves at several points.

"Rize, follow me," Venera said as she walked with him around the outskirts of the open field. There were too many people for them to realistically be able to stand around. Instead, Venera led him to a particular building on the outskirts, where they went to the highest floor.

It was a nice lounge with a big window that overlooked the rally and beverages for their enjoyment. The room looked like it was prepared for people to use to watch the ceremony without being annoyed or perturbed.

"What is this place?"

"A place I found for a better view of the entire place. We won’t be able to see or hear anything from that far away." Venera said as she sat down.

"They really sell everything here," Rize muttered as he sat down next to her and looked all around him with a curious expression. Then, his eyes fell on the astronomical number of candidates down there.

The general atmosphere was that of excitement and anxiety. Nobody truly knew what to expect, and that made it all the more stressful.

’I wonder where he is... I wouldn’t be able to find him in this many people.’ Rize frowned as he traced many faces with his eyes. Ever since he awakened, his senses kept improving gradually and steadily. His eyes were now three times sharper, and so were the rest of his senses.

He could take in far more information at a faster rate. Even from this far away, he could see faces that should be blurry to normal humans as clear as day.

After looking for a while, he finally moved his eyes to the heart of the rally. A stage had been set for the start of the tests.

Everyone waited for the arrival of the person who would start the tests. Minutes passed with no sign of them. Rize checked the time, and it was 6:59. Then, the clock reached 7:00 AM.

Suddenly, out of nowhere, a silhouette appeared on the stage. There was no introduction, no sound, nothing. Not a single soul sensed that person before they appeared like a ghost on the stage.

"Woah!"

"Where did he come from?!"

"Huh?!"

Many reacted strongly, taken aback by what just happened. The man standing on the stage looked quite young, barely in his 20s, with a strikingly sharp appearance. Combed-back black hair and a thin beard. He wore glasses and had a completely cold expression on his face. He was clad in red and white attire that looked a bit more extravagant than the uniforms they were wearing.

"Hm, that is..." Rize frowned.

The man traced the crowd that stared at him curiously before he grabbed the microphone and spoke. "Good morning, everyone."

"..."

The crowd didn’t reply as they waited for him to continue speaking.

"First of all, I want to introduce myself. My name is Erez Vort, and I have been assigned as the supervisor of the tests this year. It is my honor to meet all of you today."

’Erez Vort.’ Rize pursed his lips. ’No wonder he looked familiar. This bastard actually looks even cooler in person.’

Rize had known about Erez, as he was quite the interesting character in the story. Nobody really knew him well enough to like him or hate him. He was a very ambiguous and yet still important character in the overarching story.

"He looks quite strong," Rize muttered. "Easily a Tier 4 Awakened, maybe even higher."

Even from this far, Rize could sense the terrifying aura the man was hiding. He was a freak of nature that must not be messed with.

"I want to welcome you all to the annual Academy Entrance Test. I am certain many of you are aware of how important this day is in your lives. It is your ticket to the Academy, and whether you take it or not will be up to you." The man said. "What you will experience in the next three weeks is a true test of everything you have worked on your entire lives up to this point. We will test your precision, your intelligence, your efficiency, your ability to work under high pressure, and most importantly... Your talent and power."

Hearing that, many gulped down a big mouthful of saliva as they tried to remain calm while facing those words. They already knew the tests were going to push them to their very limits, and it was a scary idea considering all the effort they needed to even make it there.

"Now, I am sure many of you are eager to know what the test will be. However, for now, I cannot give you all the information you want. After all, in real-life situations, as awakened, you won’t always know what you want to know. You have to learn how to work with the unknown."

"..."

"The test will be three major parts. Each part will be valued differently, and after each part, a number of candidates will be eliminated."

Hearing elimination made the atmosphere grow darker. After all, the academy was only going to accept a few thousand students out of 100 million people. That admission rate was extremely low.

Everyone there knew that they could be the ones to be eliminated if they didn’t do their best. What was once an amicable atmosphere became hostile and wary. Everyone saw each other as rivals for a crucial spot in the academy.

"However, this year, we have decided to change our approach a bit due to the high influx of candidates. We thought that using our usual methods would be counterintuitive and would hinder the selection process. In that regard, we decided that the first test won’t take a few days as it usually does. Instead, it will be determined within the next 3 hours."

"What?"

"Huh?"

"What does he mean?"

"3 hours?"

The reactions were instantly those of confusion. Rize, who was relaxed while watching the scenes, leaned forward, his eyes widening with curiosity. ’This is new. Three hours? How are they going to do that in three hours?’

"What are they planning?" Venera asked as she looked at Rize.

"Beats me... They seem to be planning something big."

"Please, quiet." The man said calmly, making the entire crowd focus on him again. "I shall explain how that will happen. However, before that, we need to do something about this place. It isn’t ideal for the test."

*SNAP*

Suddenly, and seemingly out of nowhere, as Erez snapped his fingers, the entire place grew dark.

"Huh?!"

"What happened?!"

"Where is the sun?!"

"I can’t see a thing!"

"Look!! Look behind you!!"

The entire crowd erupted in shock as the world darkened around them. However, it didn’t take them long to notice why the sun had disappeared. Looking back, and all around them, everyone saw massive walls had appeared all around them, enclosing the entire area and a good chunk of the city in it.

The walls appeared instantly, with no noise or even signs of them being erected, out of nowhere.

"What the..." Rize frowned. ’What kind of terrifying ability does he have? Where did those walls appear from?’

Rize felt a chill run down his spine as he stared at the man shrouded in darkness. Seeing him standing there calmly, as if what he did wasn’t ridiculous. Then, sources of light started popping all over the roof of the sphere that Erez had just created.

The source of light made the crowd gasp in awe.

"This is a lot better." He said. "Everyone, please calm down. I am not done explaining what will happen."

His words quieted the candidates a bit, even though many kept looking around them. They felt trapped in this large dome, and it wasn’t a very good feeling to experience.

"This dome shall be the location of the first test. For the next three hours, nobody is allowed outside. Now, I want all of you to hang your badges around your necks." The man said. "Go on."

It took a second for the candidates to react before they started doing what Erez said. Rize and Venera did the same.

"Each one of you had been handed this badge as a sign of your title as a candidate in this test. If you lose that badge, that means you are officially eliminated, no matter the circumstances." The man said.

Many gripped the badge upon hearing that. They didn’t realize it was that important when they received it yesterday.

"The first test is very simple: Each one of you will have to take the badge of another candidate. The more badges you take, the more points you harvest at the end, and that will determine your position on the leaderboard. Any person who ends the test in three hours without a badge will be instantly eliminated."

His words echoed in the entire dome and fell on the ears of the candidates like an axe.
