Chapter 26: Chapter 26- Diversion
Chapter 26- Diversion
For the rest of the evening, the guests kept talking with the Royal Family, sharing drinks and celebrating the awakening. However, eventually, the time to leave arrived, and slowly, one by one, they all started walking out of the venue.
The parking lot slowly emptied of cars, and the bright light that illuminated the venue slowly turned off as the butlers and maids started cleaning the place.
Rize spent that time sitting at his table, enjoying his drink and watching the scenes silently. He was bored out of his mind, but he knew that Geralt wanted to talk to the king, and so they had to stay for a while longer.
When the venue was finally completely empty and things became completely quiet, Geralt finally stood up.
"Hmmm..." Rize looked at him curiously.
"Stay here. I will be back in a moment. It won’t take long." Geralt said before he left his seat and headed to the stairs.
"Yes, sir..." Rize said as he leaned against the chair. ’I wonder what he wants to tell him. Is it maybe about me? Or someone else?’
Either way, Rize was certain that the king already knew of his existence and that alone was a very big thing. It was the very same reason why Rize was an important character in the story in the first place.
’He was completely entangled with the Royal family from when he was a kid, and that was his biggest success... And biggest failure too. Rize became too weak, too loyal, and too in love with Venera to anticipate that betrayal.’ Rize crossed his arms as his eyes turned cold. ’He would’ve easily escaped and created a life for himself, and yet every single time he could’ve run for his life, he decided to stay and be loyal.’
Just remembering that part of the story made Rize bitter. That was why he wanted to change that. He must not let himself fall in love or become loyal. He had to find an escape route.
’This is a pretty nice world to live in, if we ignore the schemes and the evil that lurks in it.’ Rize mused. ’I could get myself a nice house in a quiet city and spend the rest of my life there. The protagonist and his goons could fend for themselves.’
"Now that I think about it... I wonder where the protagonist is right now." Rize closed his eyes as he tried to recall. ’Kaizer hmmmm... I think he was still in that house, no? His step-parents’ house. He will only escape years down the line.
Imagining the kind of life he might live, Rize could only smile to himself. It sounded like the dream goal. A quiet, nice life. One where he would have friends and people he cared about.
He was sick and tired of watching others live their lives and experience things while he was stuck in his house, ugly and fat, unloved by anyone. This second chance was his ticket to the life he always wanted.
"What are you smiling for?"
"Hm?" Rize opened his eyes as he saw someone approaching him from the other side of the venue. It was none other than Venera. She was now clad in more casual attire after wearing a dress the entire evening. Her beauty didn’t diminish whatsoever from that. If anything, she appeared more stunning in casual attire.
"I was just thinking..." Rize replied as he looked away from her. "A bit bored too. I’m really not fit for places like this."
"You will have to learn how to handle them if you’re going to work for me."
"Yeah, yeah, I know." He said.
Reaching Rize, Venera casually took a seat next to him.
"Hmm? Are you sure it’s fine to be here?" Rize asked with a raised eyebrow.
"Yeah, I’m just taking a break," Venera replied. "You just happen to be conveniently sitting here. That’s all."
’This girl...’ Rize didn’t know whether to laugh or cry at how shockingly playful Venera was. All he knew about her was her cold and calculating side, and this one... It was safe to say he never even imagined she had.
"..."
The two sat in silence for a bit. It wasn’t particularly awkward, but it was certainly odd. Rize felt like he needed to say something, but he had nothing to say.
Suddenly, Venera broke the silence with a question.
"What’s your goal, Rize?"
"Hm?" The boy was taken aback by Venera’s question. "What do you mean?"
"What is your goal? You don’t seem like someone who would just do all of this for no reason..." She said. "And it is certainly not the nonsense Geralt, or my dad, keep spouting."
"..."
"You aren’t really here to protect me or be my devout servant, are you?"
"..." Rize stared deep into her eyes, seeing the certainty in them. She knew... She knew that entire time.
’Well, I didn’t even try to pretend like I’m loyal to her or anything. I guess she found that rather interesting.’ Rize thought to himself.
"Goal, huh?" Rize muttered. "Is it bad if I don’t have anything in particular I want to achieve?"
"You don’t?"
"No, not really. I mean, of course, I will try my best to protect you. But I wouldn’t really call that a goal." Rize shrugged. "You might seriously need to find a better candidate for that role at this point."
Venera stared at him for a second before she shook her head. "No, you’re perfect."
"What? How am I perfect?"
"You aren’t blinded by loyalty or guided by a sense of worship." She said. "I’m honestly sick and tired of people who treat me that way. People who don’t really have any self-value."
"What do you mean?" Rize asked.
"I will give you an example. You do remember the faces of the nobles, right?" She asked. "Precisely the ones who approached me."
"Yeah."
"Now, tell me how many of them do you think wouldn’t listen to my orders if I told them to go down and kiss my foot?"
"..." Rize was taken aback by the question. But when he thought about it, he was shocked even more that he truly couldn’t even imagine a single one of them defying her order.
"... That’s..."
"See? That’s my point. Everyone in this nation worships us. Me, my father, and the rest of the family. They don’t see us as humans anymore, and that is not good. I want to change that." Venera said. "In this world, no human should be a deity, not my father or any other ruler or emperor."
Hearing her voice and the determination in her eyes, Rize was speechless. He already knew that Venera saw things that way, but seeing her utter these words to him shook him to the core.
This precise confession, this moment as a whole... It was supposed to happen to the protagonist, not to him. It wasn’t merely a confession... It was a key moment in the story, in Venera’s character development, and their relationship as a whole.
Yet, somehow, Rize had gotten her to utter these words to him.
The realization struck him like a train as he felt his heart race.
’This is bad... This is so bad... Really bad!’
