Rize inhaled and tried to remain motionless as the man slowly opened the door. He was completely unarmed and heavily injured, but the boost of energy he suddenly received gave him hope of beating his enemy.

Rize watched as the shadow moved from beneath the door as he peeked in. He seemed half-asleep as he struggled to keep his eyes open.

"What the hell is this noise? Shut up, bastard. I’m trying to sle-" As he spoke, his eyes opened, and he looked left and right. He saw the chains on the ground, and there was no trace of the boy.

"What the...!!!!" He exclaimed as he rushed into the room. "He escaped... The bastard escaped..." He muttered as he picked up the chains and looked around him.

He didn’t understand how he was able to release himself. They patted him down for any weapons or tools before chaining him. He was far too weak and injured to break through these chains, too. Something wasn’t right... No, something was gravely wrong, and the man felt it immediately as his heart started racing.

’I need to alert the boss. If that bastard escapes and tells them about our hiding spot. We are in trouble.’

As he was about to turn around and run back, suddenly, the man felt two arms coil around his neck. The man’s eyes widened as he felt the arms tighten and choke his neck.

"Wha..." He instantly tried to release himself, stepping back while someone climbed his torso and tightened the grip with both arms. The man felt the breath halt in his throat. He grabbed Rize’s arms and pulled them with all his power. However, the boy was hanging tightly.

He had learned many techniques for choking people and subduing them, so he was able to hold on even as the man started slapping and scratching his arms. He stepped left and right, swinging his body wildly to try and get him off.

Feeling his skin getting scratched wildly and his body swinging around like a rag doll, Rize clenched his teeth and tried to use all the power he could muster to keep choking him. The man gasped and coughed painfully as he slammed Rize into a wall.

The boy felt his body get crushed for a second before the man ran to the other side and slammed him into the wall again.

’Just... die...!!’ Rize thought. He was panicking inwardly as he didn’t know if he could kill him before the man could release himself.

However, unbeknownst to him, the situation was about to get worse. The man suddenly stopped scratching and hitting him and quickly grabbed something from his pocket. Rize looked down and paled.

’Shit!’

It was a weapon.

The man flipped the gun, ready to shoot the boy’s arms to release them. Rize looked left and right, trying to figure out a plan, before he instantly released his grip before the man could shoot. Landing on his feet, Rize slid under him.

"You fucking..."

*BANG* *BANG*

The man tried to shoot him, but he barely missed. Rize used that split-second opening and tackled him to the ground with a leg swipe. Then, he jumped on top of him and grabbed the gun.

"Let... go!!!" He yelled as the man shot several stray bullets everywhere. The two struggled for power. An injured boy and a man almost twice his size wrestled on the ground brutally. Each one was trying to kill the other.

’Ugh... My injured shoulder isn’t helping! I can’t get a grasp of him!’ Rize clenched his teeth as he kneed the man in the solar plexus, making him exhale all the air in his lungs. Then, he punched him in the face.

The man didn’t remain silent as he punched Rize in the guts and then tried to push him down. Rize didn’t know whether it was sheer adrenaline or the Essence coursing through his body, but he found strength in himself that he never thought he had.

But even with all that newfound power, and even though he was the first to attack, Rize could only do so much with his wrecked body.

*Slip*

The man punched him in the face, making Rize fall back. But at the same time, the boy yanked the gun from the man’s hand. The weapon flew in the air and landed a few meters away from the two.

The man coughed violently as he rose from the ground and looked at Rize. The boy was still knocked out and recovering, and then his eyes shifted to the gun as he rushed toward it. Grabbing the gun, he aimed it at Rize.

"Game over, bastard. You tried to kill me, huh? I don’t care if the boss thinks we should keep you. Die!" The man said in a fit of crazed anger as he tried to pull the trigger.

Rize looked at the gun barrel, and he flinched. He jumped to his feet and rushed forward. But quickly, he realized he wasn’t going to reach him in time. Everything around him felt like it came to a screeching halt.

Rize’s senses were so heightened that he could feel everything around him. His Essence flared wildly, sending waves of energy to every corner in the room. His instincts were going off in his mind, and he knew... A bullet was going to kill him.

The survival instinct he honed for so many years immediately activated, and with it... Rize received a new notification.

[Danger detected!]

[Endless Hunger Activated: Assault Mode.]

The moment Rize read those words, the black puddle emerged underneath his feet. Then, the tentacle rose into the air. However, this time, instead of looking wiggly and soft, it had a sharp, pointy end like that of a long spear.

Then, the tentacle locked onto the man before it shot forward at high speeds. The man saw it, but he didn’t understand what he was seeing. For him, the boy was running, and then out of nowhere, a black puddle of matter formed beneath him, and then a sharp spear was now mere inches away from skewering his body.

No mundane human could truly react in time to such an abnormality. All he could do was watch...

*Swish*

The spear penetrated his chest, lodging into his heart as it pushed him back.

*BANG*

The man pulled the trigger instinctively as the bullet shot forward. Rize ducked down, barely dodging it at the very last second. It was so close, in fact, that Rize felt the burning heat on his scalp as it grazed over it slightly.

He rolled before he came to his feet, just as he saw the man’s body fall to the ground and a pool of blood started forming underneath him.

"..." Rize’s eyes widened. He couldn’t believe what he was seeing.

Then, he received a completely new notification.

[You have killed a mundane human.]

[You have gained +10 Experience Points.]

[You have gained +2 Points in Strength, +1 Point in Endurance.]

Reading that, Rize felt a subtle sense of power wash over his body. It felt like someone had injected him with energy out of nowhere, and it quickly embedded into his muscles, skin, bones, and every fiber of his being.

Rize... had just grown stronger.
