By the time the lights dim around the arena, the noise has already begun to change. The crowd has spent the evening watching Ryoma dismantle Malik Adebayo, but now the atmosphere carries a different kind of anticipation.

Both fighters are already waiting in their respective corners, gloves raised as they watch each other across the ring. Elliot Graves, the newly crowned WBC lightweight champion, bounces lightly on his feet while Caleb Mercer, the former champion, stands calmly opposite him.

"And now, the WBC lightweight title is on the line. The new champion against the man who wants his belt back."

"Caleb Mercer knows exactly what it takes to hold this title. But tonight, he's facing a champion who has prepared for every version of him."

"Twelve rounds for the WBC lightweight championship."

"Let's see who takes the first step."

The bell rings.

Ding!

Elliot takes the centre first, immediately establishing the rhythm he wants with his jab and constant footwork. Caleb doesn't rush him, circling carefully and testing the champion's reactions with small feints before beginning to step forward.

And just as Ryoma had warned him, Elliot soon finds Caleb fighting with a noticeably different approach. Mercer is more willing to step into exchanges, attacks the body with greater intent, and stays in the pocket longer instead of immediately taking the safer exit.

"Mercer already looks different tonight. He's stepping forward much more willingly than we're used to seeing."

"He's not waiting for Elliot to make the first mistake either. Look at that jab to the body, then the right hand upstairs. He's trying to make every exchange cost something."

"And there's the pressure again. Double jab, right to the ribs… a short hook as Elliot tries to circle away. Mercer is staying on him instead of resetting."

It is more aggressive and more focused on accumulating damage than his old economical style.

But none of it surprises Elliot. After sparring with Ryoma, he has already faced something far more unpredictable.

Elliot responds by giving Mercer very little to work with. He settles into his lazy pendulum step, swaying just outside range and using small, economical movements to take the sting out of Caleb's punches.

His own offence remains deliberately sparse. A jab here, a quick right hand there, never enough to start a prolonged exchange; the punches seem chosen more to interrupt Caleb's rhythm than to inflict damage.

Then, with roughly thirty seconds remaining, only then does he become more active, stepping in behind combinations and forcing Caleb to answer rather than dictate the pace.

"There! Graves is opening up!"

"Mercer answers! Right hand over the top, but Elliot slips it!"

"Now they're trading! Graves with the jab, right hand—Mercer comes back with the hook!"

The sudden burst sends the arena into a frenzy. The crowd erupts at every exchange, and the excitement refuses to fade when the bell rings, carrying that same feverish energy into the rounds that follow.

***

For the next few rounds, Caleb continues with his new aggressive approach, putting greater emphasis on accumulating damage than simply scoring, though the disciplined and economical fighter within him never fully disappears.

By the fourth round, however, he begins to feel something he doesn't quite like. He isn't truly tired yet, but he is working harder than he normally would this early in a fight.

Across from him, Elliot doesn't look particularly hurt either. Perhaps the champion is simply hiding the effects well, or perhaps Caleb hasn't done nearly as much damage as he thought.

Caleb can't tell which one bothers him more. Either way, the thought begins to undermine his new approach.

"I can't keep fighting like this…"

"At this rate, he'll be the one beating me up in the later rounds."

Back in the blue corner, Marcus Vane watches for a moment without concern, willing to let his fighter dictate the rhythm again.

But as Elliot begins taking control, Caleb spends more time retreating and circling away, eventually relying heavily on his Philly Shell.

Marcus's brow tightens with irritation as he watches his fighter slip back into the habits they had spent months trying to change.

"What the hell are you doing, Caleb?" he finally shouts. "Fight him back. Or at least stop him from moving his hands!"

Rather than forcing another exchange, Caleb chooses the second option, stepping in and wrapping the champion in a clinch.

"Yes, that's it," Marcus says. "Now get out of there and control this fight again."

The referee separates them, giving Caleb room to work in the centre again. But instead of resuming the pressure, Mercer slips back into his reactive, pragmatic rhythm, prioritizing distance and avoiding dangerous confrontations.

At least, it works; Caleb survives the remainder of the round without absorbing any significant damage.

But once again, he gives up control of the fight. And once again, Marcus Vane tears into him during the break.

"What the fuck are you doing out there, Caleb? You call that fighting? You're backing up, shelling up, waiting for him to decide when you get to punch. If you want to be champion again, then fucking prove you deserve it. You don't become the king of this division by fighting like a coward and giving the other man the whole ring. Take the centre, force him to move, make him fight at your pace. I don't care how clean your defense looks if you're giving him control."

He points toward the centre of the ring, his voice showing no sign of softening. "You want that belt back? Then fight like a man who deserves to wear it."

In the next round, Caleb follows Marcus's instructions and returns to the aggressive approach, constantly stepping forward and looking to engage with Elliot.

But Elliot neutralizes the pressure with his long guard and lazy pendulum steps, keeping Caleb at the edge of his range and making most of his attacks fall short or land without much effect.

From the blue corner, Marcus grows increasingly frustrated. This isn't the aggressive, intelligent pressure he wanted; Caleb looks like a fighter mechanically fulfilling an order, advancing simply because he has been told to advance.

He is active, but there is little of the cleverness that normally makes his Philly boxing dangerous. No layered feints, no traps, no calculated invitations, none of the subtle manipulation that makes Caleb difficult to read.

"You're missing the whole fucking point," Marcus grouses as he watches the fight. "I showed you that Chameleon record because I wanted you to see how aggression is supposed to work. He kept Elliot under pressure while still thinking three moves ahead. He was aggressive because he knew how to create problems, not because he was told to throw more punches. I made you watch that shit so many fucking times. How the hell did you come away with this?"

One of the assistants glances toward Marcus before speaking carefully. "Maybe he just wasn't ready for that yet. We didn't exactly have enough time to rebuild his instincts around the way you wanted."

Marcus exhales slowly, trying to calm himself, though his jaw remains tightly clenched. Of course, he never expected Caleb to transform overnight or reach that ideal form this soon.

But he had expected something. A small adjustment, a new habit, some sign that Caleb had actually understood what he was trying to teach him and found a way to apply it.

Instead, what Caleb is showing feels almost like a quiet act of defiance. He has obeyed the aggressive part of the instruction, using it as an excuse to claim he is doing exactly what Marcus asked, while seemingly shutting his brain off to everything behind the philosophy.

Back in the ring, the fight heats up as both fighters begin trading punches through several exchanges, neither willing to give the other an easy exit. The arena surges with excitement, roaring louder with every clean connection.

"And now they're trading!"

"Graves is standing his ground, and Mercer is finally giving him the kind of fight he wanted!"

"Mercer starts with the jab, digs to the body, and Graves answers immediately!"

"Good right hand from Mercer, but Elliot takes the sting off it and fires straight back!"

"There's the hook from Caleb! Graves rolls underneath and comes back to the ribs!"

"Neither man wants to give up the exchange now!"

But it doesn't last long. Elliot begins blending subtle tricks into the pocket, manipulating Caleb's guard while constantly adjusting the distance and angle with small pendulum steps.

By the final three exchanges, only Elliot is landing cleanly.

A lead hook to the head.

Dsh!

A cross splitting the guard.

Bugh!

And then a body shot after he deliberately lifts Caleb's elbow.

Thud!

Caleb forces one final counter, driven more by pride and stubbornness than good timing. And Elliot simply makes a subtle step-back, then drives a heavy overhead right into his face.

DSH!

The arena erupts as the punch snaps Caleb's head back.

"OH! MERCER IS HURT!"

"That right hand got through clean!"

Caleb staggers backward, his hands swinging open as his feet stumble beneath him before he catches himself after several uneven steps.

"Look at Caleb's legs! He's trying to stay upright, but Graves just caught him at the end of that exchange!"

"And this is what we were talking about earlier! Elliot has started manipulating that guard, and now Mercer is paying for every mistake!"

Elliot drives Caleb to the ropes, forcing him back into his Philly Shell. Mercer rolls and deflects punches with his lead shoulder, catching crosses on his palm and absorbing hooks on his forearm while waiting for the moment to release his trademark coiling counter.

Elliot, however, knows exactly what Caleb is waiting for, and recognizes an opportunity to try something Ryoma showed him during their sparring.

He begins with a calculated one-two into the lead shoulder.

Dug. Dug.

Then a lead hook follows to the body, absorbed by Caleb's right forearm.

Dug.

Elliot follows with a cross toward Caleb's head, and that is precisely the opening Mercer has been waiting for. He leans back, pulling his head away from the punch before suddenly snapping forward with his coiling counter.

But Elliot's left hand, still tight against Caleb's chest, simply snaps upward, knocking Caleb's right hand away as Elliot simultaneously ducks his head to the left.

The sequence leaves Caleb badly compromised. His left hand remains tight against his ribs while his right arm is across to his left side, leaving his head completely exposed.

Elliot immediately drives his cross through the opening.

DHUAK!!!

"OH! THAT CROSS LANDS CLEAN ON MERCER'S HEAD!"

"HE CAUGHT HIM COMPLETELY OPEN!"

"WHAT A SHOT FROM GRAVES!"
