Void System: Every Heroine Makes Me Stronger
Chapter 103: The Second Name and the Missing MapQuiet hours had changed nothing. Severin rose from the low couch.
Maerith stayed on his right, cream-gold nightgown pooled over her knees. Nothing had interrupted the silence. Hadrin Voss still had a desk, and the desk could be checked.
Severin crossed into the west bedroom. His charcoal-black coat and reinforced boots remained on the bench where he’d left them after cleaning up. He pulled on the boots, shrugged into the coat, then returned.
Maerith looked up. "You’ll come back if the paper stops agreeing with itself?"
"If it earns the trip."
She settled back against the couch. "Better."
Severin descended. The Divine Realm vanished, cool morning air settled against his face, and the north upper landing of Greycross manor stood beneath his boots.
A door opened beside him.
Alicia stepped out in a fitted black-and-white travel dress, silver ears already forward. "Morning, Master."
"Records room."
"Yes, Master."
She followed him downstairs.
Marienne had spread ledgers and loose receipts across the north end of the west records table, brass paperweights holding the corners flat.
Nyra entered while Severin crossed the room, fingers hooked through the leather bag’s strap. The copied freight mark sat in its outer pocket. The folded handler list remained inside.
Severin held out his right hand.
Dense black mist welled around his fingers. Lamplight dulled inside it. The mist moved against the still air and muffled the scrape of paper as the packet tied to the payments that continued after Vardren disappeared settled into his palm.
Marienne’s gaze fixed on it.
He put the packet on the table.
A separate mass of dense black mist gathered over his hand. The market transaction records from the captive-sale site emerged intact. Severin set them beside the payment packet without letting the edges touch.
"Which records do you want compared?" Marienne asked. She hadn’t touched either stack. "Payments after Vardren disappeared, or every clearing entry that shares the countersign?"
"Start with the payments that stayed alive after he disappeared. Widen it only if the paper gives you a reason."
Marienne’s attention dropped to the packet.
Nyra leaned a hip against the opposite edge. "My list doesn’t join either pile."
Severin looked at her. "It stays yours."
"I’ll open the line that matters. Nothing else."
"That’s what I need."
The west door opened.
Tressa entered with a narrow folio under her arm. Saelith followed carrying a rolled local road sheet and a small case of drawing tools. The manor runner who’d fetched them saw them inside and slipped away.
Tressa glanced from the paper stacks to Nyra’s guarded bag. "What am I checking?"
"Missing people who touch the same work."
Her brows drew together. "Missing how?"
"No contact where there should be contact. No family or care record that can place them."
"So not somebody nobody happened to see yesterday."
"No."
"All right."
Saelith unrolled the road sheet partway. "I need places, Severin. A last-seen point I can put against a road. ’Somewhere south’ isn’t a point."
"Tressa gives you only what she can place."
Nyra’s ear twitched. "If Voss has enough paper to split names, whoever sits over him probably has-"
"Later," Severin said.
Nyra stopped.
"Today we prove Voss. Then we prove what his second name touches. Nothing above that until the evidence reaches it."
Marienne rested her fingers on the payment packet. "Sensibly narrow. How unlike you."
Severin met her eyes.
Her mouth curved, controlled. She opened the packet.
Alicia had stayed at his right. She tipped her head toward him. "Master, do you want me here or with you at the registry?"
"With me."
Her ears lifted. "Yes, Master."
Severin turned for the door. Nyra pushed away from the table and came with them.
The south vehicle gate was shut when the carriage rolled into the inner court.
Marienne reached the gate from inside with its matching key. She unlocked the west leaf and pulled it wide enough for the carriage.
The Perimeter Ward marked the outward crossing in Severin’s awareness, giving him direction and location without resisting it.
Once the carriage cleared the wall, Marienne swung the leaf shut and turned the lock. The key stayed with her.
Only then did the driver move on.
Alicia sat at Severin’s right. Nyra took the opposite bench with her bag under her hand and her knife still sheathed at her waist.
The registry was already busy when they arrived.
Severin ignored most of its morning noise and asked for Hadrin Voss at records intake.
The clerk behind the counter checked an index, frowned at another book, then pointed along the west run of desks.
"Voss handles sealed routing intake there. If you’re checking a filing, I can pull his desk mark."
"Do that."
The clerk pulled a narrow routing ledger from a lower drawer and opened it beneath the counter lamp.
Hadrin Voss’s name sat beside a simple angular mark Severin had already seen copied in charcoal.
Nyra saw it too.
The broker hadn’t invented that part.
Severin shifted enough to give her room.
She stepped up on his left and opened her bag herself. The folded handler list appeared between thumb and forefinger. She kept most of the page turned toward her chest while exposing a narrow strip.
Alicia moved from just behind Severin’s right shoulder until her shoulder came level with his arm. Her ears angled toward the paper.
Nyra noticed. She gave Alicia a dry look, then lowered her eyes.
Her finger stopped beside a line carrying the same mark.
"Damn," she murmured. "Cheap bastards. New name, old mark."
Severin read the name beside it.
Corlan Saye.
"Same man?"
"On my side, that mark belongs to Corlan Saye." Nyra folded the rest of the list tighter before the clerk could glance over. "That’s the name they used for Voss in the market. It doesn’t tell us who pays him."
"Enough."
She slid the paper back into her bag.
Alicia eased back to Severin’s right-rear without being told.
The public mark beside Hadrin Voss matched the mark Nyra kept beside Corlan Saye. That was enough to send Marienne something useful.
He fixed his intent on her and activated Command Relay.
’Hadrin Voss. Corlan Saye. Same verified routing mark. Compare the payment records.’
His Core dipped for a heartbeat. The Void Reserve restored what Command Relay had taken.
Marienne’s acknowledgment came back through the link a heartbeat later. She’d received the report and was checking.
Severin let the connection quiet.
"We’re done here."
Nyra glanced at the registry ledger. "For once, public paper was useful."
"Don’t get sentimental."
A quiet breath escaped her, almost a laugh.
The carriage had covered most of the return road when Command Relay touched Severin’s awareness again. Marienne’s answer came cleanly through the existing link. Saye’s name sat on a market clearing entry. The countersign beneath it matched the route on the payment packet that had kept moving after Vardren disappeared.
There was no payer name.
Severin accepted the report and let the connection fall silent.
Across from him, Nyra watched his face. "She found something."
"A route. Not a payer."
Nyra nodded. "Better than pretending they’re the same thing."
At Greycross, the carriage stopped before the closed south gate.
The driver signaled. From inside the wall, Marienne unlocked the same west leaf and held it open. The Ward marked their inward crossing without resisting it.
She relocked the leaf after the carriage entered. The key remained hers.
By the time Severin returned, Tressa had spread names and family notes across her corner of the west records table. Saelith worked beside her with the local road sheet flat beneath her hands. Marienne had kept the payment packet and market records separate at her end.
Nyra stopped across from Marienne. Alicia settled behind Severin’s right shoulder while Severin took the open north side of the table.
Marienne tapped a clearing strip. "Saye is on a market clearing entry that uses the same countersign route. The payments keep moving after Vardren disappeared."
"Does that make Saye the payer?"
"No." The answer came at once. "It puts him on the route. If I call him the payer, I’m adding something the ledger doesn’t show."
Severin looked at the line she indicated. "Keep it limited."
"Gladly."
Tressa made a small sound under her breath and turned a page toward him.
"I’ve got 7."
Her handwriting ran in compact lines, each name followed by only what she could support.
"4 have last-seen places I can defend," she continued. "A family member, a relief stop, somebody who saw them leave. The other 3 are missing, but I can’t give Saelith a road for them without making it up."
Her pen reached a lower name and stopped.
Tressa’s fingers tightened around it. "Her mother said she always..."
She broke off. Her grip eased only after a slow breath through her nose. Then she marked the margin instead of finishing the sentence.
"No. That doesn’t place her."
She slid only the 4 supported last-seen notes across the table.
Saelith took them without touching the remaining 3. "Good."
Tressa looked up. "Good?"
"Good that you didn’t give me a road you don’t have."
Tressa stared at her, then gave a reluctant nod. "Fine. Yes. That."
Saelith arranged the 4 notes beside her road sheet and started with a blunt pencil instead of ink.
She crossed out a steep branch almost immediately. "No loaded cart takes this slope cleanly. A man on foot could cut it. Transfer wagons wouldn’t choose it unless the road below was blocked."
Nyra leaned closer without opening her bag. "The market used carts."
"Then I cut this line."
Saelith moved to the next branch. "This reaches the south freight road. Another joins it farther west. The flatter approach works, but anyone on the public lane can see it."
She kept working until only the cart-capable branches remained.
Nyra opened her list just far enough to expose Corlan Saye’s line again. Marienne moved the clearing strip beside the copied mark. Tressa kept her page beneath her hand. Saelith turned the map toward Severin.
Severin put the mark beside Marienne’s strip and traced Tressa’s 4 last-seen points against the cart roads Saelith had kept. The surviving roads tightened around a disused south-side freight transfer yard close to those points.
"There."
Saelith followed his finger. "Carts can reach it from different sides."
Nyra leaned closer to the map. "And nobody honest has much reason to use it lately."
"That’s the site."
Severin kept his finger on the yard and activated Route Lattice.
The cart roads Saelith had kept settled into approach and fallback branches around it. A small draw touched his Core, and the Void Reserve replaced it at once.
Severin looked to Marienne. "The originals go back."
He lifted the payment packet again.
Dense black mist folded around it, dimming the nearby lamplight and swallowing the scrape of paper against his palm. The packet vanished into the Void Vault intact.
He waited until the mist cleared, then lifted the market transaction records.
A separate surge of dense black mist engulfed them. The records disappeared into the Vault without touching the payment packet.
Nyra folded her handler list and returned it to her bag. Tressa drew the 7-name page back into her working papers. Saelith kept the route map spread beneath her hand.
Severin looked across Marienne, Tressa, and Saelith. "Stay on the records. If something changes, tell me exactly what changed. Don’t fill the gaps for me."
Marienne’s eyes warmed with brief amusement. "A painfully reasonable instruction."
Tressa capped her ink. "We’ll manage."
Saelith nodded. "I’ll keep the map here."
Severin turned to Alicia and Nyra. "With me."
Alicia’s tail lifted. "Yes, Master."
Nyra closed her bag. "I assumed."
"You assume too much."
"Occupational damage."
The west leaf of the south gate was closed again when the field carriage came around.
Marienne unlocked the west leaf from inside. Her key never left her hand as the carriage crossed, and the Perimeter Ward marked the outward passage without resistance.
She shut and relocked the gate before they moved on.
Severin waited until he saw the leaf settle before telling the driver to move.
The carriage followed the public south cart road and stopped short of the transfer lane.
"Stay with the horses," Severin told the driver.
He stepped down first. Nyra followed to his left-rear. Alicia came down last and settled behind his right shoulder.
The public road held ordinary Greycross mud: softened wheel grooves, crossing boot prints, horse marks pressed deeper where carts had slowed.
The transfer lane was cleaner.
Severin led them down the short lane until the disused shed opened ahead, then stopped at the yard’s edge.
Nyra held his left-rear. Alicia stayed to the right-rear without crowding him.
The yard had been swept too well.
Old ruts still scarred the ground, but fresh traffic barely touched them. The loading edge beneath the shed doors carried fewer recent wheel cuts than the public road behind them. Boot scarring appeared only in thin patches where repeated handling should have churned the dirt.
Nyra’s nostrils flared. "Too clean."
Severin kept his eyes on the threshold.
Alicia looked from the muddy public road behind them to the pale, worked ground ahead. "Fresh tracks on the road, Master. Barely any where the carts should’ve loaded."
"I see it."
Severin raised his hand before either woman stepped farther.
"Stop here."
"Yes, Master."
Nyra stayed still.
Severin looked from the churned road to the swept loading ground, then planted his boot at the boundary and didn’t cross it.
