Late the next morning, the ward brushed Severin’s awareness as the field carriage rolled through Greycross’s west leaf, marking the southbound crossing without resistance.

Marienne stood inside the wall with the matching key still in her hand. She waited until the rear wheel cleared the threshold, then pulled the gate shut behind them.

Alicia rode at Severin’s right on the forward bench. Across from them, Nyra kept her leather bag tucked close against her side, her left forearm resting over it.

They spent the late morning following freight traffic south.

Not every cart mattered. Most carried things that announced themselves from 20 paces away: grain, split timber, barrels of lamp oil, cages full of irritable chickens. Severin let them pass. The useful ones were the covered loads, the drivers who changed roads without obvious reason, and the wagons that came back too clean for the work they claimed to do.

Nyra watched those.

She had just leaned slightly toward the window when the driver pulled the reins hard.

The horses snorted. Leather creaked. The carriage stopped.

A handcart stood broadside across the road ahead.

Severin looked past it once and knew it hadn’t been left there by accident.

The freight road ran straight south between a low stone wall on the west and a shallow drainage ditch on the east. The cart’s west end crowded the wall. Its other end stopped short of the ditch, leaving enough packed road for a man to squeeze through, but not the carriage.

A thick-necked man waited beside that gap.

Severin remembered him.

Nyra’s mouth flattened. "Quarry labor."

The buyer’s face tightened.

That was the man from the schedule, the one who had claimed he bought workers for his own crews and never resold them. Nyra had stripped the lie out of that claim in front of him.

Severin’s gaze moved once to the west wall. A man in a short charcoal coat stood near a low break in the stone, far enough back to pretend he wasn’t part of this yet.

"Watch the rear, Alicia."

"Yes, Master."

Severin opened the carriage door and stepped down first.

He passed the stationary team and stopped short of the narrow eastern gap. Nyra followed, keeping the bag under her left forearm as she moved behind and slightly east of him. Alicia came last. Her silver ears were already turning toward the wall as she took the space behind Severin’s right shoulder.

The driver stayed on the box.

The buyer glanced at Nyra’s bag.

"Give me that. Then you turn around and go home."

Nyra’s smoke-black ears tipped forward. "You were more convincing when you lied about quarry labor."

"Shut your mouth."

Severin didn’t raise his voice. "Say what you came to say."

The buyer looked at him, then back to the bag. "You stop following carts. You stop asking about handlers. She gives me the list, and this ends here."

Nyra let out a quiet breath through her nose. "Generous."

Severin had no interest in his temper. What mattered was that he knew about the list at all.

The man near the wall shifted his weight.

Severin watched the man near the wall and waited for a reason to treat him as more than company.

Wisdom’s Edge stayed in the Vault.

The buyer made the choice for him.

His right hand snapped to the knife at his right hip. The dark-brown coat kicked open as he drew. His shoulder turned toward Nyra, and his lead foot drove into the gap.

Threat Vector caught the rush in a heartbeat. Severin saw exactly where to move.

Severin stepped east.

His left hand closed around the buyer’s right wrist before the short blade could rise. His right palm hit the man’s left shoulder and drove him off his line. The knife scraped down toward the packed road, away from Nyra.

The buyer grunted and yanked against the hold. Severin’s grip didn’t shift. The trapped wrist trembled in his hand, but no bone gave.

Severin rotated him west, forced the wrist down, and took his balance with the same motion. The knife dropped beside the eastern gap. A heartbeat later the buyer hit the road chest-first.

Severin folded the captured wrist behind his lower back and planted his right palm between the man’s shoulder blades. His right knee came down beside the buyer’s left hip and locked the position.

The buyer sucked dirt through his teeth.

Behind Severin, stone rasped under a boot.

Alicia’s ears snapped west.

Severin looked over his right shoulder.

The second man came through the break in the wall with his right hand pulling a short knife from his right hip. He moved south along the stone with his elbow tucked close and the blade held tight to his body. No broad swing. No wasted reach. He tried to get inside Alicia’s space before opening the knife arm.

Alicia moved at the last clean instant, with the sudden seamless balance Severin had learned to recognize as Battle Pulse.

She slipped diagonally southwest, left hand catching his knife wrist while her right forearm crashed into his upper arm and shoulder. The guard’s short entry turned into her pivot.

His chest and knife arm hit the stone.

THUD!

The blade jumped from his hand and struck the road.

Alicia folded his right arm behind him before he could bounce off the wall. She drove him down onto both knees, facing the stone, and kept his wrist high enough that another attempt would hurt far more than obedience.

Dust streaked the front of his charcoal coat. His right hand shook from the impact, and his next breath came shallow. He stayed conscious.

"Stay there," Alicia said, breath barely disturbed.

The guard cursed under his breath.

Nyra had already stepped north and east. The ditch remained beyond her boots, and neither blade could reach her. Her bag was still pinned beneath her left forearm. Her own knife hadn’t left its sheath.

Severin looked down at the buyer.

"Don’t move."

The man went still beneath his hand.

"Knives," Severin said. "Bring them separately."

Nyra glanced at the dropped blade near him. "I wasn’t planning to juggle them."

She approached from outside the buyer’s reach, picked the knife up by the handle with her right hand, and kept the blade pointed down. The bag never left her left side.

She stopped a step east of Severin.

Severin looked from the knife to the man beneath him.

Dense black mist spilled over the knife in Nyra’s hand.

The buyer’s head jerked sideways.

The mist swallowed steel, hilt, and nothing else. When it pulled inward, Nyra’s hand was empty.

"What the fuck was that?"

Severin ignored him.

Nyra took the long way around the north side of the handcart to the west wall. Alicia didn’t loosen her hold as Nyra approached. The second knife lay just south of the kneeling guard’s right knee. Nyra picked it up from the east side of his body, well clear of Alicia’s grip, then retraced the north side of the handcart.

Back at Severin’s east side, she held the blade down in her right hand.

Dense black mist closed over the second weapon and took it.

This time the buyer said nothing. His breathing changed instead.

Severin leaned a little more weight through his right palm between the buyer’s shoulders.

"How did you know the paper in her bag was the handler list?"

The buyer spat grit from his mouth. "It doesn’t matter. You brought the damned thing with you."

Nyra didn’t move closer. Her gaze stayed on the man while her ears angled toward his voice.

"Before today, did anyone warn you we were tracing handlers and cart movement?"

"No. Nobody warned me. I saw an opening and took it."

Nyra went still, ears fixed on the buyer. Severin recognized the shift: Deception Trace.

Silence held.

"The part about nobody warning him," she said. Her voice was low and flat. "Deliberate."

The buyer’s shoulders tightened under Severin’s hand. His voice changed before Severin had to apply more pressure.

"Fine. Fine. Word’s moving. Buyers. Brokers. Runners. People know you’re tracing handlers and carts. Enough of them know to watch for you."

Nyra’s expression didn’t soften.

"Keep talking," Severin said.

"I heard about the list. Saw a chance to take it before you found more. That’s it. Take it, ruin it, make you stop using it. I don’t know who started the talk."

Nyra looked at Severin rather than the buyer.

"That’s him talking," she said. "The lie I caught was the warning."

"I know."

The buyer twisted his head as far as the road allowed. "I can give you names."

Severin watched him for a moment.

Maybe he could. Maybe he would keep inventing names until Severin reacted to one. Either way, the road was a poor place to sort it out.

A cart wheel clattered somewhere far to the north.

’Time to leave.’

Dense black mist gathered around Severin’s hand and rolled over the buyer’s back.

The man’s breath hitched.

"Wait. I said I can!"

The mist thickened over coat, gray shirt, trousers, and boots. The man’s body fought the pull. For a heartbeat, the resistance ran deeper than muscle. Severin kept the wrist locked behind his back until it gave way.

[Void Devour successful.]

’Store.’

[Stored in Void Vault.]

The body vanished with the black mist.

Only road dust remained beneath Severin’s hand.

The driver had gone rigid on the box. He still held the reins.

Severin rose and moved north around the edge of the handcart, then crossed west along its upper side.

Alicia kept the guard on both knees until Severin stood beside her.

"Release on my grip."

"Yes, Master."

Severin’s left hand closed around the guard’s right wrist. His right settled on the man’s upper back. Only then did Alicia let go and step to Severin’s right.

The guard tried a sharp pull.

It changed nothing.

Dense black mist climbed over his charcoal coat and coarse tan shirt.

"No, don’t!"

Severin kept him in place until the last resistance collapsed into the Void.

[Void Devour successful.]

He chose Store again.

[Stored in Void Vault.]

The black collapsed. The guard was gone.

For the next 6 minutes, the road stayed quiet.

Nyra opened her bag and checked the folded handler list herself. It was still there, undamaged. Her own knife remained sheathed at her waist.

Alicia went back to the carriage, checked the horses, then the driver and the road behind them. When she returned, her breathing was already easy.

"Horses are fine, Master. Driver too."

"Good."

Nyra refastened her bag. "He could’ve been lying about everything after the warning."

"He could."

Nyra’s ears tipped toward him. "But somebody warned him."

"Yes."

Her tail traced a slow curve behind her. "That narrows nothing."

"It tells me somebody reached him before we did. That’s enough to change how we move."

Nyra stayed quiet for a beat, then nodded. Some of the tension left her shoulders.

Severin moved to the handcart. He gripped the north side of its frame with both hands and pivoted it clockwise around the west end until it sat lengthwise beside the stone wall. The road opened through the center and east side.

The driver stared at the cleared space, then at Severin, and said nothing.

When they were ready to leave, the driver brought the horses backward into the wider patch of road north of the obstruction and turned the empty carriage through a full arc. Only after it faced north did Severin let the others board.

Alicia took the forward bench at his right. Nyra sat opposite again with the bag against her side.

She leaned forward once to check the strap near the buckle.

Alicia, already close to Severin, shifted the last fraction nearer until her shoulder almost lined with his arm. Her silver ears tipped toward Nyra for a heartbeat, then forward again.

Severin noticed and let her stay there.

The return to Greycross passed without another obstruction.

Marienne opened the west leaf from inside when the carriage reached the south gate, the matching key still in her hand. The Perimeter Ward touched Severin’s awareness as they crossed north into Greycross, again without resistance.

Marienne closed and locked the gate behind them.

The carriage rolled into the inner south court and stopped.

Severin stepped down first.

Alicia came to his right. Nyra followed a step behind and to his left, the leather bag still on her shoulder.

She looked toward the house, then at him.

Severin turned for the door.

"Inside. We need to talk."

Nyra adjusted the strap once and followed.
