Three paces down, the throat bent left.

Severin followed the curve with Wisdom’s Edge low beside his right leg. Gray light weakened across the stone, then widened ahead as the passage opened into the hollow returned by Seismic Ping.

The chamber was broader than the Skill had made it feel. Its floor dipped toward a basin nearly 20 paces away. Thick ribs of gray-brown stone emerged from the walls and ran beneath the clay, all of them converging on the center.

Something gleamed there.

A crystal sphere rested inside a socket of dark stone roots. It was a little wider than a man’s head, perfectly round, and smooth enough to reflect the pale chamber light. Deep moss green filled its center. Amber-brown threads curved nearer the surface. They seemed flat from the entrance, then revealed their depth when Severin changed position.

Six stone roots curved around its lower third. Each ended against the sphere in a smooth, shallow contact. Narrow mineral lines descended from those contacts through the basin and continued into the ribs crossing the floor.

It was not floating. The chamber held it in place.

Severin stopped at the mouth of the hollow and checked the right wall first.

A raw split cut through one of the ribs. It widened near the floor, narrowed as it rose, and ended before reaching the ceiling. The break went less than 2 paces into the wall. Loose chips remained beneath it, their edges sharp. No route continued beyond them.

So that was the second return from his first Ping. A fracture, not another passage.

He crossed the hollow.

Shallow tracks wandered through damp clay near the walls. Most matched the smaller creatures he had passed earlier. Pale mineral growth spread in wet patches between the ribs, some untouched, some bitten down to slick stubs. Water gathered in narrow grooves and disappeared beneath the central basin.

Nothing had worn a road through the chamber. The stone roots around the sphere showed no cut marks, clamps, repairs, or residue from repeated handling. Even the clay between the converging ribs remained mostly whole.

Young. Or left untouched long enough to imitate it.

The threshold had risen in an open field before witnesses. Behind him, fresh tracks crossed stone whose fractures were still sharp. The first answer was more likely.

Severin approached until 2 paces remained.

The shallow line across his left palm stung when he opened the hand. He kept the sword in his right and studied the sphere from the socket to its glossy crown. The green center gave him no measure of what it contained. The amber threads did not move. Nothing on the surface named the object or explained why the whole chamber converged beneath it.

The calm woman’s voice from the field returned to mind. It had spoken once after his arrival, then the ground had shifted and the screaming horse had made curiosity less urgent than blood.

Now he had a moment.

You can hear me?

[System: I receive questions and commands you deliberately direct to me, My Lord.]

The answer came in the same composed female voice. No one stood in the hollow with him.

You spoke when I arrived. Why only then?

[System: Direct speech became available when Material World synchronization completed the adaptive communication interface.]

What are you?

[System: I am the adapted communication interface of the Archetype System.]

A function, then. The woman’s voice was simply how the interface reached him.

Why "My Lord"?

[System: The adaptation selected that address for the bearer of Blessings of the Void.]

The title explained the address. Severin let it stand.

His attention returned to the crystal sphere.

What is that?

[System: It is the Dungeon Core of Faultroot Warren. Its connection to the dungeon is active.]

He had reached the source he had followed through the Warren: a physical object seated where the chamber ribs converged.

What does it do?

[System: A Dungeon Core sustains its dungeon link and directs Core Essence into terrain growth, restoration, and creature production.]

The converging ribs looked less like decoration now. Their lines might carry the connection through the chamber, though Severin still could not tell how the mechanism worked.

How much Core Essence can it hold?

[System: Its maximum Core Essence capacity is 10,000.]

How much does it hold now?

[System: Unknown. Accurate measurement requires an Appraisal ability, or a weapon or instrument designed for Appraisal.]

Maximum was not current value. The sphere might be full, nearly empty, or anywhere between. Its color offered no answer Severin knew how to read.

He crouched beside the basin and set the flat of his left fingers against one of the outer stone roots, not the crystal. Cool dampness pressed into his skin. The root did not shift. Its base continued into the floor without a fitted seam.

He moved around the basin. The other 5 roots formed different curves but joined the same network beneath the sphere. On the far side, clear water filled a thumb-deep groove before vanishing under the socket. Three pale nodules grew beside it. One bore a fresh bite, its broken surface still wet.

Something small had fed here recently without disturbing the sphere or its socket.

Severin could break the socket. With sufficient force, he could tear the sphere free and put it in the Void. The question was whether the dungeon would survive the theft.

What happens if I remove it?

[System: The dungeon link will be severed, and Faultroot Warren will begin to collapse.]

He left his fingers on the stone for another breath.

One sphere with an unknown charge offered a single extraction. Left connected, it could restore terrain, form more creatures, and keep producing whatever else this young dungeon had not yet shown. He already had bodies, witnesses, and the route to this chamber. The source itself was the part he could not replace.

Bad arithmetic.

Severin lifted his hand.

Wisdom’s Edge remained low. No black mist touched the crystal.

He gave the chamber one final circuit with his eyes. The raw split ended inside the right wall. A drop struck a wet patch and made the pale growth tremble. Small tracks approached the basin, veered around one stone root, and returned toward the wall. Nothing else justified more time.

He turned toward the throat.

When he had crossed the threshold, the driver had still been alive. Tressa and the workers had been holding the crisis together with too few hands while the runner went for help. Whatever had changed outside, another question about the sphere would not improve it.

Severin entered the ascent at a run.

The former guardian chamber came first. Blood still darkened the clay where the Faultback Boar had died, but the body was gone. He crossed without slowing.

The narrow route shortened his stride twice. Beyond it, the beast he had used as a guide remained against the junction wall. Blood beneath the corpse had spread farther through the clay.

The left hollow stayed dark. Neither smaller creature emerged.

Severin kept moving.

Damp mineral air flowed down the broad passage. Beneath it came the faint trace of wet grass.

The flat exit boundary waited beyond the next bend.
