Void System: Every Heroine Makes Me Stronger
Chapter 48: A Better Use for Captured MenSeverin crossed the threshold into the barred Mereford meeting house. Pale divine stone gave way beneath his right boot to worn boards. Cold dawn pressed through the shutters; damp timber and yesterday’s horse water lingered. The front bar remained in its brackets. The papers on the long table hadn’t moved.
The path closed behind him. He drew a breath and let it out. Nothing hurt, and his mouth wasn’t dry. Only fatigue pulled through his abdomen and thighs, heavy but harmless.
He set his palms under the bar, lifted it, and opened the door.
Tressa waited in the yard with a covered bowl and cup. Saelith sat on the low rail. Alicia stood closest, silver ears turned toward him. Behind them, 1 horse stamped while the other 2 shifted against the rail.
Tressa looked from his face to his stance. "Sit."
"I can work."
"You can work after you eat." She passed him. "Whatever Wisdom wanted from your night, she didn’t send you back rested."
Saelith rose carefully, keeping a hand on the rail until she was upright. "Wisdom appears to value his attention more than his sleep."
Alicia entered last. Her 2 silver ears flattened for a beat, and her tail went still.
"I kept the door all night, Master."
Severin hung his coat on the west-wall peg and sat at the table. "Bring the bowl here."
Her ears rose. "Yes, Master."
He emptied the onion-and-meat broth, ate the bread, and drank her water. The fatigue remained when he stood, but the hollow edge was gone.
"Good," Tressa said. "Now judge 12 people without falling over them."
"They won’t all live."
"No." Her mouth tightened. "But you’ll know why."
Severin narrowed the shutters enough to block the yard’s view, then closed the door. Alicia barred it on his order. He set a coil of meeting-house rope beside her.
"Stay at the door. No one enters. Move only the person I name. Bind wrists only after I have them. Untie only at my word."
"Yes, Master."
Tressa took the east end of the table with the village book, fresh paper, and water. Saelith sat at the west end beside a clear space for water records. The east bench remained clear. The rear room stayed closed.
Severin cleared the floor between table and door and stood on its west side, within 1 step of the center.
Oren’s captive list appeared beneath his hand. Severin read the 12 relevant names, then returned the list to its separate place in the Vault.
"A name gets a question," he said. "Not a sentence."
He retrieved the relay pages tied to Meris Kade and brought her into the center.
She arrived with a sharp breath, her stained dress and ink-marked cuff unchanged. Severin caught her upper arm before she could move. At his nod, Alicia tied her wrists and returned to the door. Meris looked at the pages before she looked at him.
"Name."
"Meris Kade."
"What did you carry?"
"Relay copies and the pages Halen ordered preserved."
"What did he order you to change?"
"Nothing in my hand. He chose which copy moved and which return mark stayed."
"Oren’s list calls you keeper of the sealed accounts."
"I kept relay copies. Halen kept the sealed accounts." She shook her head. "That’s his lie, not mine."
Severin turned the page toward her. "Which marks are yours?"
She identified 2, rejected a third, and stopped at a sealed notation.
"You copied it."
"The cover line. I didn’t read what the seal hid." She swallowed. "That’s what I know. Not more."
The page proved movement, not guilt.
Tressa checked Meris’s fingers, the pressure at her wrists, and whether she could hold a pen without shaking. "Fit to write. Fit to answer. No reason to keep those knots."
"You’ll earn 5 Silver a day for 2 days, with food," Severin said. "Mereford protects you. Give your account separately and sign nothing you call false. Tell Tressa if fear, injury, or pressure stops you. You sleep behind canvas on the east side. When the term ends, leave or choose new paid work."
"And if they come back?"
"They won’t reach you here."
Meris nodded without thanking him.
Severin nodded. Alicia untied her and moved her to the east bench. Meris stayed silent while he returned the relay pages to their group.
Only then did he retrieve the archive pages and bring Sella Vorn into the center. Alicia bound her wrists at his nod.
Sella fought for her first breath. "Warn a woman."
"You knew you were Stored."
"I knew darkness had me. Darkness doesn’t usually have floorboards."
"What bundle did you carry?"
"The archive copy from the fire line."
He set the burn notation before her. "Which cut is yours?"
"Mine here. Edrin Koss there." Her finger touched 2 marks. "He changed the count after the shed burned."
"What was in the shed?"
"A man who’d seen the first ledger."
"You saw him die?"
"I saw Koss lock the door. I heard the man inside. Then he took payment and made me copy a cleaner page." Her jaw worked. "You want a prettier answer, find a prettier clerk."
Tressa checked her hands and breathing. Severin asked, "Why would you lie about him?"
Sella gave a short laugh. "Other than wanting the bastard dead?"
"That’s a reason."
"So check the payment cut. Check the ash count. Check Meris without putting us in the same room. If our marks disagree, keep me in the dark."
They didn’t disagree on who changed the burn count.
Severin offered Sella the same protection, food, 2-day term, and 5 Silver rate. She accepted stiffly. When her account ended, Severin nodded; Alicia untied her and seated her beside Meris.
Severin returned the archive pages and retrieved the selected water pages before bringing Vessa Marr into the center. Alicia bound her wrists at his nod.
Mud had dried on Vessa’s boots. She checked the barred door, the shutter gaps, and the rear room before looking at the table.
Severin told Alicia to untie her for the work test.
Saelith tapped the lower mouth and reset sill. "What happens if this opens before the side cut is cleared?"
"Water climbs the old bank, eats the reed bed, and drops silt into the village turn."
"This order says the lower mouth opens first."
"Then the order’s wrong."
"Show me."
Vessa put 2 fingers on the page, left for the channel and right for the cut. She spoke in mud, stone, roots, and sinking boots. The sequence matched the ground without naming a motive.
Tressa checked her calluses, breathing, and knees. "Fit for wet work. Stop her if the cold changes that."
"I stop any sequence that pushes damage downstream," Saelith said. "Follow that order or leave the water."
Vessa looked at Severin. "Useful enough to go back?"
"Useful enough to earn 8 Silver a day for 2 days, with food. Saelith stops unsafe work. Tressa removes you if you’re unfit. You reopen nothing she stops, carry no weapon, and command no villager. Afterward, choose whether to take another agreement."
"Huh." Vessa glanced at Saelith. "I’ve had worse foremen."
"I’m not your foreman. I’m the woman who’ll make you rebuild it if you bury the lower mouth again."
Vessa’s grin was brief. "Close enough."
Severin sent Alicia with Vessa to the front yard. She returned to the threshold, left the door open beneath her hand, and kept Vessa beside the east shutter in sight.
Calven Rusk appeared alone. Severin caught his upper arm. Alicia stepped in, tied his wrists, freed them at Severin’s word for the tool test, then resumed the threshold.
He began listing tools and medicine before Saelith finished her question. "The west bank takes 4 people if the ground stays dry, 6 if it doesn’t. We need 2 mattocks, 3 shovels, a short saw, wedges, clean cloth, and..."
"Breathe," Tressa said. "Can you work in cold water without worsening the old strain?"
"It stiffens. It doesn’t fail. Keep me off the deepest cut for the first hour."
"Start with the bank," Saelith said. "Clear it without sending the load into the village turn."
Calven reversed his first tool order, admitted Deren had forced the wrong cut despite his warning, and matched Vessa’s sequence where it mattered.
Severin gave him the same 8 Silver rate, 2-day term, food, no weapon or command over villagers, Saelith’s right to stop the waterwork, and Tressa’s right to pull him out if he became unfit. Calven accepted. Severin called Vessa back. Alicia seated her on the west bench and placed Calven beside her before barring the door. Severin restored the water pages to their group.
He retrieved 1 relay page, then brought Halen Dorr into the center. Severin controlled his upper arm while Alicia bound his wrists. Meris identified her correction and fell silent.
Halen saw the 2 unbound clerks on the east bench and smiled without warmth. "You found better company."
"I found people willing to answer the question asked."
"That sounds exhausting."
Severin placed the relay page before him. "What you told me in the tent put this handoff before the return mark."
"The return mark is hers. The delivery line isn’t. Oris carried that."
A small truth offered to preserve the rest.
"Who ordered the killing attached to the altered copy?"
"Deren ordered discipline. Oren priced names. I kept paper moving."
"You kept yourself between every answer and the man paying for it."
Halen breathed through his nose. "A useful place to stand."
"You still have information. You don’t have freedom."
Severin returned the relay page. His right hand closed around Halen’s bound wrists; his left locked the upper arm.
Halen planted his feet and drove sideways. Severin held wrists and shoulder while black mist closed around the man’s legs and climbed his torso. The Void took body and soul together.

The Vault sealed Halen in a separate hold. His wrist rope remained on the boards. Severin told Alicia to coil it by the door.
Oren Halst arrived next, polished calm worn thin. Severin held his upper arm while Alicia bound his wrists.
Oren looked at the table. "You haven’t paid your witnesses."
"I wrote the debt."
"Debt is a promise. Coin is proof."
"So is surviving until payment."
Oren’s smile narrowed. "We understand each other."
"No."
Severin retrieved the captive list and set the lines Meris and Sella had corrected before him.
Oren priced them before answering. "Clerks are worth more alive. Workers repay food. Guards become expensive when they stop frightening anyone."
"You wrote a false line beside Meris."
"Insurance. Every list needs room for a buyer to change his mind."
Severin returned the list, retrieved the contract stack, and tested its payment terms against what Meris and Sella had corrected separately. Oren’s answer frayed. He admitted the Greycross mark belonged to an active route, but not whether any right to use it survived.
Severin returned the contracts and brought out the buyer-route sheet alone. "This mark assumes the repaired crossing."
Oren’s gaze caught. "It assumes a crossing. Don’t confuse ink with stone."
Saelith laid 1 finger beside the mark. "If the repair holds, the line is physically usable. That doesn’t make the road yours, open a gate, or bind anyone at Greycross."
"A careful woman," Oren said.
"A living one."
Severin folded and returned the sheet. "You’ll remain available."
"For negotiation."
"For questions."
Oren lunged sideways at the table’s edge. Severin caught him before contact, right hand pinning the bound wrists and left locking the shoulder. Black mist swallowed arms, chest, and head. Oren’s breath caught as the Void took body and soul together.

Oren entered another separate hold. His wrist rope dropped to the boards; Alicia added it to the coil by the door.
He retrieved the relay record tied to Tovan Rell and brought Tovan out alone. Tovan appeared within reach; Severin caught his upper arm, and Alicia tied his wrists when Severin nodded. The page placed him on bow duty under Deren. He admitted striking 2 captives. Nothing in the relay record or either clerk’s account placed him at an earlier killing. Severin restored the page. At his order, Alicia seated Tovan on the floor beneath the west window, wrists still tied and back against the wall.
Severin retrieved Oris Vane’s warning bundle and brought Oris out alone. His right hand closed on Oris’s upper arm before Alicia tied the wrists. Oris admitted carrying messages and watching the outer line. Each answer lacked a piece until the route mark made denial useless.
"The warning went north first," Oris said. "Not east. East was where Deren wanted you looking."
Neither warning mark nor witness placed him at an earlier killing.
"If another man runs?"
"He comes back to me. I judge him again. You stay where the watch can see you."
"If he cuts my rope first?"
"You call the watch."
"And if the watch is asleep?"
Tressa scratched her pen across the paper. "Then shout louder."
Severin restored the bundle. Alicia seated Oris along the west wall, beyond Tovan’s reach, and returned to the door.
Severin retrieved the buyer-site record tied to Jarek Pell and brought Jarek out alone. He caught Jarek’s upper arm; Alicia tied the wrists and returned to the door. Jarek’s short blade remained Stored. He received no weapon.
"You attacked me at Oren’s site," Severin said.
"I did." Jarek gave a bitter laugh when Oren’s promised escort pay met the attack record. "5 Silver to work for the man who swallowed my buyer. That’s a cursed little joke."
The page named no earlier killing.
"You can refuse it."
"And go where?"
"Back into the dark."
The laugh died. "Fine. Tell me the damned terms."
Severin returned the buyer-site page. Alicia seated Jarek farther along the west wall.
Alicia brought Tovan to the center first.
Tressa read from the paper. "Food, bedding, and 5 Silver for every completed day. Timber, mud, stone Severin permits, or the crossing approach. If injury, cold, or exhaustion makes you unfit, I pull you out."
Saelith added, "If any task touches water and I stop it, you stop."
"Hands free while you work," Severin said. "No weapons. Watched at all times. No sale, brand, collar, or ownership. Completed work is paid. Escape or assault ends the term and brings you back to me. On the morning of 9 October, you leave unless you choose another paid agreement."
Tovan stared at him. "You want gratitude?"
"No."
"Good. You won’t get it. But I’ll work."
Alicia returned him to the west wall and brought Oris. Tressa repeated the full terms without shortening them. Saelith and Severin repeated their parts.
Oris nodded. "2 days."
Alicia returned him and brought Jarek last. He heard every term, mouth twisting at the wage.
"2 days," Jarek said. "Then I’m gone."
After all 3 had answered, Severin told Alicia to untie them and move them to the front yard. She remained at the threshold, kept the door open beneath her hand, and held all 3 in sight. No weapon left the Vault.
Severin then ordered Alicia to move Vessa and Calven from the west bench, then Meris and Sella from the east. All 7 stood in the yard where Alicia could see them, their removed ropes coiled by the inside wall. She left the door unbarred beneath her hand. Tressa finished the fitness and pay terms from the doorway; Saelith repeated the water restriction to Vessa and Calven. The rear room stayed closed.
Severin called Meris back alone before retrieving Deren. Alicia seated her on the east bench, returned to the door, and left the other 6 outside with Tressa and Saelith.
Deren Holt appeared. Severin secured his upper arm while Alicia bound his wrists. The man straightened as though the hall still answered to him.
"Unbind me. Bring Koss in. Meris, put that page away."
Meris didn’t move.
Severin placed the corrected order before Deren. "You sealed this."
"I sealed necessary discipline."
"You changed seizure to killing."
"I changed an order that had failed."
Meris identified the scrape, return mark, and seal. Severin restored the page and replaced it with the payment record from its own packet. Deren denied neither. He only renamed the order and the killing. Severin returned the packet.
From the doorway, Tressa kept one eye on the people outside. "He’s fit. No wound that’ll change what he understands."
Saelith held the other side. "The family fled the lower houses after the killing. The abandoned bank failed in the next rain."
"Losses happen under command," Deren said.
"Yes. This one began with yours."
"Death," Severin said.
At his order, Alicia returned Meris to the yard, opened the door, and moved to the west-side corner. "West corner clear, Master."
Severin walked Deren around the west wall with his right hand around the bound wrists. At the shallow drainage edge, he forced the man to kneel facing east. No one followed them into the rear yard.
Deren tried to rise before his second knee touched earth.
Severin stood behind him, cupped the jaw with his left hand, braced the back of the skull with his right, and made 1 controlled turn.
The upper neck broke.
Black mist covered flesh and the soul still bound close to it.

Deren’s corpse occupied its own place in the Vault. Severin left the rope on the packed earth and returned alone. Alicia resumed her place inside the door at his order.
With Deren Stored, Severin retrieved the burn-payment packet. He had Alicia bring Sella back alone and seat her on the east bench. She returned to the door before he brought Edrin Koss into the hall. Severin controlled Koss while Alicia bound his wrists.
Koss swore before Sella finished naming the correction mark. "That’s her cut, not mine."
"The first is hers," Severin said. "The second is yours."
"Fuck your ink."
"The payment matches it."
Koss glared at Sella. "You lying little..."
Alicia moved 1 step from the door. Koss stopped.
Sella had gone pale, but her voice held. "You locked it. I heard him hit the door until the roof fell."
Koss denied the count, then the hour. Nothing broke the chain between his hand, the locked shed, and the payment.
Severin sentenced him to death and returned the packet. Alicia returned Sella to the yard, then held the west-side corner again.
Koss jerked hard at the rope before his knees touched earth. Severin pulled him back along the west-wall path and forced the east-facing kneel. His left hand closed around the jaw, his right braced the skull, and 1 controlled turn broke the neck. Black mist took body and soul immediately.

The Vault kept Koss’s corpse separate from Deren’s. Severin left the rope in the rear yard and returned alone. At his signal, Alicia resumed her place inside the door.
With Koss Stored, Severin brought out Neris Vale. He held her upper arm while Alicia bound her wrists and returned to the door.
Severin showed her the route-payment page, restored it, then brought out the horse-line record. She denied neither posting nor mount. He returned that page too.
At his order, Alicia brought Vessa to the doorway while Calven remained outside.
Neris bared her teeth. "Channel rat."
Vessa didn’t move. "You blocked the gate. The farmer tried to open it. You rode him down."
Alicia returned Vessa and brought Calven in alone.
No one had given him her words. "She returned with blood on the left stirrup and no cut on her."
Neris looked him over. "Tool-carrying coward." Then she spat beside Severin’s boot. "He should’ve moved."
Severin sentenced her to death. Alicia opened the door and took the west corner at his order.
Severin kept Neris’s wrist rope short along the west path. She walked without begging, then twisted at the last step to drive her shoulder into his chest. His left hand locked it and forced the east-facing kneel before moving to her jaw; his right found the back of her skull.
He made 1 controlled turn. Her upper neck broke. Black mist took body and soul immediately.

Neris’s corpse occupied its own separate place. Severin left the rope on the earth, washed his hands in the rear-yard bucket until the water ran clear, and returned to the meeting house. He sent Alicia back to her place inside the door.
Midday light lay across the table. Tressa and Saelith returned to their ends. Food had removed the hollow edge from Severin’s fatigue, not the weight in his abdomen and thighs.
Tressa totaled the account aloud. "Meris and Sella, 2 Gold. Vessa and Calven, 3 Gold 2 Silver. Tovan, Oris, and Jarek, 3 Gold. Work, 8 Gold 2 Silver. The 2 watchers get 4 Silver each per night. For 2 nights, 1 Gold 6 Silver."
She drew the final lines. "Road-security debt, 9 Gold 8 Silver. Paid now, 0."
The road bond hadn’t arrived. Severin’s coin remained untouched.
On a second slip, Tressa listed the 7 people and their sleeping sides. Their terms would begin after the midday meal and end on the morning of 9 October. For 2 nights, all 7 would stay in the main hall, with canvas between the 3 women and 4 men. 1 watcher took the front door and 1 the west window. They would wake Alicia or Severin, not fight. The rear room stayed closed. Rope returned only for violence or escape.
Tressa tucked the account page and sleeping list into her village book.
Severin drew each record group out, checked its cord and page order, and put it back before drawing the next. The captive list stayed alone. Contracts, receipts, relay pages, archive pages, order pages, and water pages kept their own ties.
At his order, Alicia brought Meris and Sella back to the east bench. Only then did Severin retrieve the old water map and buyer-route sheet. He kept the route sheet beneath his left hand and passed the map to Saelith. She laid it beside the sheet.
With their protection written, Meris pointed to the Greycross mark. Sella put a fingertip beside the same mark and confirmed the copy hand, not the road. Saelith traced the repaired crossing with her right forefinger and the older road line with her left.
"The ground permits it," she said. "That doesn’t mean the road is open, the crossing belongs to you, or anyone at Greycross will honor this sheet."
"It means the 3 horses and the people assigned to the approach can reach the first question."
"Yes."
Alicia waited at the door, silver ears turned toward him. "What do you need next, Master?"
Saelith lifted her hands from the papers. Severin returned the old water map to its own group, folded the route sheet along its old crease, and returned that to its separate place inside the Vault. He looked at Saelith.
"We start at the crossing after the midday meal."
