A gray beast hit the stream. Its neck struck the rock under the current, and it didn’t come back up.

Another disappeared beneath the red jaws and stopped moving before Severin cleared the threshold.

The survivors had nowhere left to run. Rock hemmed them in on one side, the current on the other, and the attackers were already closing the wedge.

8 left.

Severin went down the southern slope.

Loose stone burst from beneath his boots. He bled speed before the ford, letting the last stretch scrape through his legs instead of carrying his full weight into the trapped animals. The wrap on his left calf pulled tight. His right ribs answered the braking breath with a dull stab.

The red-jawed leader lowered its head.

Threat Vector opened a line between it and the stream.

Severin caught the water beneath its lead paw with Water Lash. The current rolled the limb outward. He crossed the remaining ground under his own acceleration, used Gust Vector to alter the last step, and cut behind the jaw.

The sword passed through the neck. He stopped the edge before it reached the gray bodies packed beyond the falling leader.

"Back."

He turned broadside to the stream and drove the sword point toward the safer bank. The gray beasts recoiled from the blade. When the red-jawed survivors tested the ford and found Severin waiting, the 8 moved behind him instead.

A gray beast tried to break past his hip for the water.

Severin caught it with the flat of his boot. The shallow kick lifted the animal, turned it, and dropped it on the bank without the crack of bone. It scrambled upright, stared at him, then lowered its head.

He waited until the pack stopped crowding.

Then he stepped aside.

The gray beasts drank. Severin watched the first mouthful stay down before crouching and taking water in his palm. It cooled his throat but didn’t touch the ache under his ribs.

The stream deepened above and below the ford. A rounded boulder sat in the shallows near the rival bank, broad enough to ruin the easy approach.

Severin planted his sword in firm gravel within reach and pressed his palms against the wet stone.

The boulder held for a breath.

He drove through his legs again. Gravel heaped ahead of the stone. Water foamed around his wrists as the boulder ground across the ford and settled against the rival approach, leaving a narrow, exposed lane for anything that tried to return.

The red-jawed pack moved downstream.

Severin reclaimed the sword.

"Move."

The gray pack followed after a hesitation. The wounded runner limped behind them, blood darkening the tear along its flank, but none remained at the ford.

Movement flickered on a high shelf to the west.

The climb slowed the pack. It didn’t slow Severin enough.

A lookout dropped from the lip. Threat Vector marked the outside of its claws. Severin surged up the last rise and let Gust Vector shift his shoulder clear of the strike. His body check caught the creature beneath the chest and spun it across the shelf.

Its companions fled down the broken rear slope.

Severin didn’t chase. He laid the sword beyond the lip, set his hands against a cracked slab, and shoved until stone screamed over stone. The slab crossed the easy ascent and jammed against the shelf wall.

He took up the sword and stood at the edge while the gray beasts gathered behind him.

"Hold."

They stopped because the drop and Severin’s body left them nowhere safer to go.

From the height, he found a wet cave under an overhang farther west, a carcass hollow below, and a narrow cut running north between dark ridges. The smell of old blood reached the pack first.

The gray beasts started downhill.

Severin moved before the wounded runner could be separated.

The hollow held a half-stripped carcass and 7 broad-jawed scavengers. Runoff slid beneath the meat in a shallow channel.

Water Lash dragged blood-streaked water across the far approach. Part of the scavenger pack turned after the scent. The rest rushed the gray beasts.

Threat Vector left an opening beside the lead animal’s foreleg.

Severin crossed it and cut once.

The scavenger fell with its throat open. The other 6 stopped beyond sword reach.

The gray pack surged for the carcass.

Severin stepped in front of them too.

A blunt head pressed toward the meat. He planted his boot against its shoulder and held it outside the feeding line while the others paced and snapped behind it. Only when the pack stopped crowding did he move aside.

The gray beasts fed first.

The broad-jawed scavengers received the outer edge after they stopped testing him. The excluded gray beast watched the others tear meat until it lowered its head. Severin let it through.

A split behind the carcass widened into a shallow covered recess. Its throat allowed only 1 scavenger through at a time.

Severin used his legs and the flat of the sword to drive 2 gray beasts inside. A runner tried to turn. He blocked it until the pair faced the narrow opening.

"Hold."

A scavenger pressed close. Severin lowered the sword across its nose. It withdrew to the outer meat.

When Severin backed away, neither gray beast followed.

Severin left the scavenger pack at the outer meat and led the mobile graysteps away.

A much larger beast watched from a rise beyond the hollow.

Layered plates crowned its neck and shoulders. Its roar crossed the basin. Calls answered from the west shelf and the southern routes, not together, but close enough to tighten the whole lowland around the sound.

The beast turned first toward the ground Severin had already taken.

If Severin stayed, the crowned beast could hammer the ford, then the hollow, while he ran between them.

The north cut climbed toward a dark opening beneath the ridge.

Severin pointed with the sword.

"We take the cut. Then its den."

He activated it.

His next step found the shorter slope without the correction he would have made a moment earlier. A wider shelf opened to his left. His gaze slid past it.

His calf tightened. His mouth had gone dry again. The bruise under his ribs sharpened with the climb.

The north cut stayed sharp. Everything else blurred at the edges.

An uneven beat sounded behind him.

The wounded runner had fallen several body lengths back. Its hind leg slipped, caught, then slipped again.

Severin kept moving for 2 strides before forcing himself to stop.

Not if the pack breaks behind me.

He waited until the animal reached the others. Even then, his gaze kept snapping back to the cut.

"Move."

A patrol rushed from the cut. Water threaded through loose scree along the right wall.

Threat Vector marked the line beside the lead attacker. Water Lash swept the runoff under its feet, rolling stone down the slope. Severin accelerated through the gap and used Gust Vector to clear the last snapping jaws.

The gray pack flooded into the opening behind him. It worried the retreating patrol but stopped when Severin blocked the chase.

Inside the cut, he set the sword against the wall and braced his hands on a fractured slab. The first shove widened the crack.

He reset his feet and drove again.

The bandage bit into his calf. Stone grated beneath his boots. The slab rolled into the choke and buried its lower edge in broken rock, closing the southern approach behind the pack.

Severin took up the sword.

Through the gap between ridges, he saw the crowned beast on the western shelf. It smashed through the slab he had left there and climbed onto the height.

A roar followed. Distant calls shifted toward the ford and carcass hollow.

Keep it.

Severin turned north.

A den guard broke for a separate western trail, screaming alarm into the basin. Severin entered before it rounded the rock shoulder.

Stored meat lined a wall beyond a broad resting shelf. The mobile graysteps surged past him. He cut off the nearest guard’s retreat toward the shelf, and the pack drove the smaller animals out through the western opening.

The gray beasts spread over the den and fed.

Then the crowned beast came back.

Its bulk filled the western trail. Crown plates locked low over its neck. All 6 feet tore at the dirt, the 2 forelimb pairs beneath its chest striking in a staggered thunder.

Severin moved into the entrance.

A clean dodge would save him. It would leave the pack in the charge line.

Threat Vector offered a glancing route along the beast’s shoulder.

Severin stepped into it.

The crown clipped his right side. Severin turned with the impact, but the beast’s mass still hurled him out of the entrance. Pain crushed through his ribs and shoulder. His breath disappeared.

The crowned beast planted its 2 forelimb pairs across the threshold and roared over the den it had retaken.

The gray pack scattered outside its reach.

Calls answered from the western trail and the slope below.

Severin dragged air back into his lungs. Only then did he activate Impact Echo. The shoulder-and-crown blow fixed itself inside the skill while pain kept spreading through him.

"Back."

He crossed the pack’s path until the gray beasts gathered beyond the next charge. They darted toward the den, then withdrew whenever the crowned beast turned.

Its plates stayed locked while it defended. When it raised its head for a full roar, the base of the crown opened.

A gray runner lunged for the stored meat. The crowned beast broke the roar and turned after it.

Threat Vector showed a route outside the main forelimb.

Severin accelerated onto the rising shoulder. Gust Vector changed the final angle. His right boot wedged between 2 crown plates, his left knee struck the beast’s back, and his left hand hooked the nearest plate while the sword stayed in his right.

The crowned beast twisted and drove its shoulder into the den wall.

The wall returned the same shoulder-and-crown blow through Severin’s right side.

He triggered Impact Echo and yielded through the slam. His shoulders and hips turned with the beast’s motion. Pain still burst beneath his ribs, but his left hand and knee kept their purchase.

The beast pulled away and lifted its crown for another command roar.

Severin drove the sword beneath a raised plate.

The membrane gave. Hard bone caught the point beyond it. He checked the thrust before the ordinary blade could wedge or bend, keeping the edge in the soft tissue.

The crowned beast bucked.

Severin let the hilt travel with the motion. The beast’s own twist drew the blade through the membrane and into the tissue around its spine.

Its forelimbs collapsed.

Severin kicked free before the body rolled across the den mouth. It struck hard enough to shake dust from the wall.

He stayed beyond the kicking rear feet until the scraping stopped.

A shallow nick marked the sword’s middle edge. Blood ran along the scratched steel. His right shoulder throbbed, but the grip still obeyed him.

Severin pointed the sword into the den.

The mobile pack reclaimed the resting shelf and faced the entrance around the stored meat.

He opened Void Devour over the plated corpse.

Black mist rolled across the crown and down the body, drew it into darkness, then contracted. Bare ground remained.

Severin held the entrance while the pressure worked inside the Void. He counted seconds beneath his breath.

Claws scraped over the resting shelf behind him. The northern cut stayed quiet. No command roar climbed from the south.

He released Pursuit Drive.

The den stopped pulling at every thought. Thirst returned as a raw scrape across his tongue. His ribs hurt with each full breath, and his shoulder dragged under the sword’s weight.

The reclaimed shelf, the answering packs, and the den settled into the same shape. Each victory had made the next order carry farther and the ground harder to take back.

That would scale.

Every muscle seized. Pressure ran through his bones and closed around his spirit.

The contraction drove his planted boot through the den threshold. Stone split beneath the sole. Heat crossed muscle and bone. A second shock rang through his spirit. The old pull in his calf loosened. The sharp edge beneath his ribs receded, though the newest bruising in his shoulder remained.

[Existence reconstruction complete.]

[Physical and spiritual parameters reinforced.]

Severin pushed himself upright with the effort he expected to need.

He rose too fast.

His knee snapped straight. His weight pitched forward before he caught it, and the nearest gray beasts flinched away from the sudden movement.

He bent the knee again, slowly this time.

The bandage around his calf hung loose. A full breath no longer cut beneath his ribs. His right shoulder still carried a dull ache. Thirst still rasped across his tongue, and fatigue still weighted his legs.

The gate beyond the den opened onto darkness.

Glass roads crossed a void beneath a line of fading lights. A crowned serpent moved along the nearest route.

The road behind its tail vanished.

Another light went out.
