VRMMO: World's First Glyphborne
Chapter 386: P-A-R-T-Why? Because I gotta!Such a time frame was not ideal for the party, especially if the monsters kept appearing in the city. But what more could they do?
Patrolling the city was simply impractical for a multitude of reasons, primary amongst them was the fact that it might not be restricted to their home city. It might not even be restricted to this one man, this was just the only lead they had.
So they just had to remain patient, and keep themselves busy in the meantime.
"If we are waiting for this kind of information, maybe going to some stupid party isn’t the best of ide- Ow! What was that for?"
Jason clutched at his arm, glaring at Lucy with a mixture of confusion and pain.
Despite being two heads shorter than him, and like a twig in terms of their musculature, Jason shrank away from his fiance as the short woman glared daggers at him.
Her eyes were wide open, beaming psychic shouts at him as he tried to figure out what he had done wrong.
"Party? What Party?" Valerie asked with a frown, which for some reason flared up Lucy’s fury even more, earning Jason another barrage of slaps on the arm until he completely shrunk away with his tail between his legs like a scolded puppy.
Valerie glanced between the two of them with eyebrows creased in serious confusion, before Lucy whipped around and flashed a wide smile at her, completely absent of the fury she had displayed literally seconds ago.
It actually scared her slightly.
"Well, I was going to tell you about it later before someone opened his big mouth, but we got invited to a party. A very nice, fancy party at a mansion retreat. They even sent the invitation directly here, so it would be rude not to attend."
"Yeah... Well... Jason is right. This isn’t exactly the time to be attending frivolous parties." Valerie replied with a dismissive wave of the hand.
"Besides, for that kind of event you would absolutely need to dress up, and I definitely don’t have anything that fancy to wear to any kind of party, nevermind - Oh..." Valerie started to say, before cutting herself off as a thought popped into her mind.
Her face immediately fell, and she shot a withering glare towards Lucy, who was only smiling wider as she slowly glided over to Valerie like a predator moving in for the kill. Never in her life did Valerie ever think such a sweet girl could look so horrifying.
But in this moment, she really could see the Demon that was hiding behind the mask of sweetness, and it terrified her.
"I-I’m not going! Nothing you can say or do will change my mind on that!" Valerie shouted in protest as she was dragged away, with Lucy’s arm hooked around her own. Her feet scraped across the floor, even more helpless to stop her plight than they usually were.
"Besides, no one even knows us? What rich idiot is holding a party at a time like this, and why the hell would he invite us?!"
***
Percival Theodora Monarch the Fourth, known in other circles as the magnanimous Prince of Stars - Leader of the Golden Prince guild - was stuffing small party food into his mouth.
It had been close to a week since the invites for this grand party had gone out, and thus here he was. Stood at the edge of a grand and ever so slightly garish ballroom that was decorated with a lot of gold accents.
Befitting his name, he was not dressed in a simple tux, and instead was dolled up like he was a true prince of old.
A deep royal blue tail coat covered his torso, doing its best to hide the the well tone and muscled body underneath and failing completely at that task. It was buttoned in the front, allowing a golden ascot to peak out underneath his collar.
The tailcoat was covered in golden swirls, made of a real gold infused silk just to increase its value, as well as to accent the Royal Blue of the coat.
White, thankfully loose fitting, trousers contrasted it and some comfortable and well shined boots warmed his feet. To complete the look, someone had decided that what this outfit needed was a cape, the same colour and with the same accents as his tailcoat.
Thankfully it was short one that hung off of his left shoulder and only draped down to his waist, just low enough to allow him to hide his arm behind it if he wished. This strange fashion statement was held on by a golden broach in the design of the guilds crest.
Beneath this cape, his hand rested on the sword Percy insisted on carrying. Many had protested against bringing the weapon, with some of their concerns being over how it made the specially designed outfit look.
But with what he knew, Percy didn’t care about such things. Although, even if he didn’t know what could come, he still didn’t care about the outfit. It was for that exact reason that he barely brushed himself off despite being covered in crumbs from his snacking efforts.
Chewing his mouthful of snacks, his cheeks bulging like a chipmunk, Percy glanced idly around the room and took in the faces of the guests. It was a veritable who’s who when it came to those who had been invited, a phrase that was more literal in some cases.
There were many famous faces, including wealthy upper class corporate elites, as well as various members from the four ’Sect Families’ such as his own. The families that harboured the secrets of magic and mana for centuries, before it was finally exposed.
But there were also not so famous faces, because their owners had kept themselves hidden. E-sports professionals, anonymous streamers and unknown elites that radiated a serious amount of power.
It proved that even if you did not recognise someone at the party, that anyone who was in attendance absolutely deserved to be here. No one was here by mistake.
Percy glanced at the door, boredly taking in the sight of all of the guests still filtering into the room, when the sight of a singular woman in a sleek black dress completely stopped his heart. Everything else in the room became meaningless, his vision completely tunnelling in on this figure, who became the only thing that existed in his mind.
His eyes widened, desperate to drink in as much of the radiant beauty in front of him as possible.
Percy practically melted when Valerie’s eyes, which had changed to a brown and crimson mixture, finally landed on him after scanning the room. And when he saw the adorable, slightly nervous smile grace her lips, his heart - which had still not found the courage to begin beating again - began to back-flip and flutter wildly.
In that moment, Percy felt that if he died, he would be doing so happy that he had been able to witness a gift from the gods themselves. Which was good, because he immediately started to cough and choke on the food that he had forgotten was in his mouth.
