Way of Overlord

Chapter 687: The Will to Kill

There is a weakness to the current strength of the Brolgadhr tribe.

A weakness in the system.

And that system lies on him.

The tribe thrives and rises because of him and unfortunately, it could also fall because of him

The reason is because time....he did not have enough time.

Aeryon did try to create a system.

Governance, military, economy the law and all of the other principle of governance of a nation

But Aeryon is not a genius. And he is not someone who knows in detail on how to quickly set this up

Of course, he had learned in the process on how to do this thing and as he did more and more, he grows.

And he wanted to rush and build the system precisely because he knows the weakness of this system

He wanted to stop the oppression of the people of the Steppe, the future he already knows where the people of the Yan dynasty would kidnap people of the Steppe and use them as cannon fodder in their battle for the central plains

In the ed, whoever becomes emperor in the central plains of Yan had nothing to do with the people of the Steppe.

It is fine if they give the honour and respect when recruiting the warriors of the Steppe. But it is well known of how the Yan people treated those of not their race

They would suppress you, and would never give you a fair assessment.

Even what seems a fair rewards is just a way of controlling you or letting you fall into some kind of trap.

Always suspicious of you, not because of your action but simply because you are of a different race from you.

Its fine if its just suspicion and exclusion especially considering the era, but most of the time this Yan people wanted your life.

If you ever managed to reach a high position, they would find a way to bring you down and execute you and when you are dragged into the execution ground no one would stand up for you.

Aeryon wanted to create the system to plug the weakness and he is even rushing it

But, no matter how he wanted to rush it, he knows too much haste brought waste. In his case, too much haste could bring doom

So, he knows even if he has all kinds of reforms and all kinds of great ideas, it only could work if it is given time

A king, a ruler sometimes needs to be more like a farmer than he is as a warrior

A farmer understood the virtue of patience.

They need to know not to be anxious too much.

Those who anxious water the plant too much and in that process, the plant drowns.

those who are too lazy, would come to an empty plot.

But those who are patient and diligent would see the plot of land has food on it. But even among farmers, there are farmers who have fertile wheat and some who have scarce wheat

Hence a farmer also need to know some tricks. How to guard the wheat, how to make it fertile, how to watch when it would rain, when it would flood, the condition of the land and other factors.

Hence, even though he have an idea of a system of governance, most of it is still barebones.

And the people under him, would not be able to adapt to it if he forces it.

All of this is new ideas in the Steppe. Some of it is old ideas, revived

But for most people living in the Steppes, living in this part of the Steppe, these are all new ideas and so they needed time to learn it, to adapt to it and to be at ease in living in this new reform

This could not be solved by simply trying to project his will and just asking people to obey.

If he wanted it to be lasting, it must be something that the people themselves understood and use and that is how it is.

The only drawback is that it requires times

He knew that reform is not only about dealing with the red tape but also patience for it to grow.

Just like a farmer tending to a plot of land.

Sow the seeds and patiently wait until that seed breaks through the ground.

And even then, you must tend it so it could become something

So, most decision still rest in his hand, and all the generals and all the heroes under his banner treated his words as divine decree more than any words from any rites of law he written

But....the weakness of this system is that once he dies, then all the reforms, all the laws he wanted to create would disappear.

Aeryon himself knows this weakness.

Hence, it is after he realizes this, he rarely goes to the front line. It is not that he won’t go. It is just that he lower down his appearances

After all, there is all kinds of what-if. What if one outing could change the history of the world?

There is many of such things happening in the world

This did not mean he become a coward.

When a battle needs his personal participation, he still would participate.

The western expedition is such cases. It needed him on the helm so that everyone knows he is determined to take the west.

This is a conquest that would make or break his new regime. As long as he succeed, the western border tribes on the Southern Great Steppe could be subdued.

Give them enough threat and gifts and they could be won over. Aeryon knew how important the west is.

As long as he could take it, he already won half the Southern Great Steppe.

As for the other tribes, they are no longer a threat.

Even if all the tribes on the northern area united with each other, it would be useless.

As long as Aeryon could consolidate and digest the west, in one year at most, he could send tens of thousands of his men to raid and rob these tribes.

And not before long he would make all those northern tribes bow their heads. And then the unification of the Southern Great Steppe would come naturally to him

And with one entire region in the entire Steppe falling into his hand....then this could only mean that the unification of the entire Great Steppe....could happen in his lifetime. So, is there any battle that is more important than this?

There isn’t.

The founding battle of his empire is here.

As long as he could took down the west quickly, then his desire to create the empire of the old....could be reached!

And then Aeryon mind comes back to the plot of assassinating him. And he could not help but feel....complicated

And this is one of the possibility that he reached.

That all of this talk about surrendering is all a plot to come near him. To come close to him to have a clear shot of killing him

And the moment Aeryon look at Chayun again his gaze turns sharp. Because he knows.

In that moment when they were close, when the only distance between them is around two feet, when the candle fire sways left and right, at that moment, Aeryon knows

What made the candle fire sways left and right?

Some people might think it is the wind.

It is not the wind. Not because the wind is not there.

The wind was there, but it is not so strong that it would cause the candle fire to sways like that.

That candle on top of his small table where he uses to read reports and to light up his tent, is different from the lanterns hang around his tent or the other minerals that glows in the dark that he used to light up his room.

The candle itself is not that special.

It is the wick that is special.

The wick when burns could detect people feelings around it.

Aeryon rarely uses it.

But he does find it useful.

Because when he uses it, he himself knew when he is agitated, when he is anxious, when he is nervous.

In a way, it is like a mirror acknowledging things he did not want to acknowledge

The candle itself is very rare.

Aeryon only has around twenty of it.

Some of them he bought from wandering merchants and some of it he got from his conquest. Out of the twenty candle, he had used four of it. This is because when he wanted to ask his own heart, he would light up this candle. Especially when he is in a campaign like this.

However, when Chayun say in front of him, Aeryon was not nervous, nor was he agitated.

Then it could only mean that the cause come from Chayun. But was Chayun anxious? No, he was not anxious at all.

That pair of eyes, was full of fire. In that moment....Chayun probably contemplated on how to kill him

In that moment he might have been tempted to kill him.

Why does Aeryon eyes turns sharp at that moment?

Because in that moment....he could see that Chayun hand is slowly reaching to his dagger.

And in that moment Aeryon was ready to flip the table.

Who knows?

With that close of distance, if Aeryon is even a tad bit slow, Chayun could really assassinate him. If he is assassinated, even if he survives, such attack at close range probably would give him heavy injuries.

And if that happens, circumstances might change again
