Three siege bows sat in their cases on the port-side rack. Heavy compound geometry. The limbs were twice the thickness of the standard crossbow’s, the cam pulleys larger, the riser blocks reinforced with internal bracing that distributed the stored energy across six load-bearing points instead of two. These weren’t shoulder weapons. They were ground-mounted. Jayde cocked them by planting both feet on the stirrup brace, gripping the string with both hands, and driving upward with her entire enhanced body. Three hundred pounds of peak draw. The bolt for a siege bow was different from the standard ammunition. Longer. Heavier. She was right. Eden’s targets were different from Jayde’s targets. The doctor aimed at anatomy: joint membranes, sensory pits, relay hubs, the specific neural nexus points she’d mapped across months of dissection. Precision over force. A lighter bolt at a weaker joint was more lethal than a heavier bolt at a thick plate, if the lighter bolt hit the right spot.

"If the hub is where I mapped it," Eden said, examining the grouping, "any one of these is a kill shot."
On her shoulder, Zhi watched the testing with dark eyes that tracked each bolt from rail to target. The serpent’s wings were fully extended now, the translucent membranes catching the shuttle’s amber light, the capillary network beneath them thickened and strengthened across weeks of growth in the dead spot’s safety. Zhi was larger than the cistern creature. Not dramatically. Enough. The body that had been forearm-length was approaching elbow-length. "How does it feel?" Eden asked.

"Can you shoot?"

The finished sets were ugly. Functional. The mottled amber chitin over dull silver alloy looked like something built in a war zone by people who cared about survival more than aesthetics. Which was exactly what it was.
Zhi had watched the armor assembly with particular attention. The serpent perched on the shuttle console throughout the fitting process, dark eyes tracking each piece as it was shaped and mounted, the small head tilting at angles that suggested evaluation rather than curiosity.
[The clicking-thing shells,] Zhi said through the bond. [You’re wearing the clicking-thing shells.]
"We are," Eden confirmed.
[That’s...] A long pause. The ancient soul processing something the child’s mind found deeply strange. [That’s like wearing the monster’s skin. Is that allowed?]
"In a war," Eden said, "you use what works."
[Oh.] Another pause. The child’s mind turning the concept over, examining it from angles that were partly six years old and partly older than the seal. [I think the clicking things would be angry if they knew.]
"Probably."
[Good,] Zhi said, with a satisfaction that was older than the child’s voice carrying it.

And now she had enough of it.
[Are we ready?] Zhi asked. The serpent was perched on the shuttle’s console, wings spread, scales shimmering in the amber light with the steady confidence of a creature that had watched an arsenal grow piece by piece and understood, in whatever way a six-year-old ancient god understood things, that the balance had shifted.
[Before, we hid from the clicking things,] Zhi continued, unprompted. [Now we have the shells and the sharp things and the hard suits. Before, the clicking things came and we ran. Now—]
The serpent paused. The dark eyes moved from the siege bows on their rack to the exoskeletons on their stands to the quivers of bolts lined along the bulkhead.
[Now maybe they should run from us.]
Eden looked at Jayde. The not-kind smile was back.
"Almost," Jayde said. "Tomorrow we test the full kit. Outside the dead spot. Against something bigger than a worker column."
Eden checked her crossbow’s magazine. Checked the exoskeleton’s power cells. Checked the bolt quiver on her hip. Checked the chitin-alloy plates on her shoulders.
"I’m ready," she said.
Day one hundred and twenty. Two hundred and forty-five remaining.
The arsenal was built. The dead spot had given them the time and the materials and the silence. Tomorrow, the clicking would learn what Federation engineering and Charling anatomy research and two hundred days of patience had produced.
Tomorrow, the janitors would meet the guards.
