What Do You Mean I Have To Comprehend Dao As A Mortal God?
Chapter 254: Clearing The First WaveI held my sword at my side as the Anomalies came charging towards us, their wolf heads barking and growling at us.
"Liliac," I called out to her, indicating she should use her powers at that point.
She did not hesitate and moved her hands in front of her, causing several of the vines around the street to snake out and snatch a number of the Anomalies to wrap around them.
While that dealt with a number of them, most of them were still free and continued their charge towards us.
The good thing was that the wrapped up Anomalies became obstacles for the others and broke up their charge and slowed the others down. Some even caused a pile up as the Anomalies behind them crashed or trip over them and made the others behind them fall over as well.
Gunshots rang out as the ranged Vanguards started firing at the charging crowd of Anomalies, thinning out their numbers with a hail of bullets and buying time for the mages to cast their spells as well.
The melee Vanguards held their ground, their weapons held at the ready to intercept the remaining Anomalies that managed to get through all of that.
I raised my sword right as the first one reached us, the Anomaly leaping towards me.
Under normal circumstances, I would have Dan in front of me to tank the charge but since I wasn’t that squishy anymore...
I raised my foot and kicked the leaping Anomaly in the chest with enough force to turn the wolf monkey Anomaly into a cannon ball.
There was a loud crack as my kick turned its insides into mush before it crashed through another group of Anomalies, sending them flying in every direction.
I then leapt forward, charging through the space that I cleared and prompting part of the horde to divert its attention to me, easing the pressure on the Vanguards behind me.
Dan raised his shield and smacked his mace against it, taunting the other Anomalies to focus their attention on him as he braced himself.
The next group of Anomalies crashed against his shield and they scratched and bit at it, trying to claw past the wall that was Dan.
He heaved against them and shoved most of them flying away from him before swinging his mace to smash the heads of a few Anomalies that tried to charge him while he had his shield shoved away to the side.
He then spun on his heel, using the momentum of his swing to his advantage to return back to his ready position right as another Anomaly smashed against his shield.
This time, instead of dealing with it himself, another Vanguard came forward and thrust his spear from behind, skewering the Anomaly through its throat before pulling back, letting Dan shove it off to free himself.
One of the Vanguards looked at me running straight into the Anomalies and let out a shout, "Shouldn’t we stop him?!"
Dan yelled back, "He’ll be fine! Worry about ourselves more!"
I grinned at the vote of confidence he had in me as I charged straight into a group of those Anomalies.
One of them tried to lunge towards me, only for my sword to be shoved in its way and allow the creature to impale itself on the blade, the creature letting out a choked gasp as my sword pierced through its neck.
I swung my sword and turned the creature into an improvised hammer and used its corpse to smash against the side of another Anomaly, sending both of them flying away.
I tried to slice through another Anomaly, my blade only managing to get halfway through its shoulder before it got caught on the bone and got itself stuck.
The Anomaly roared at me and I didn’t hesitate to just go ahead and punch it in the face, my enhanced strength ended up blasting its head clean off its shoulders from the blow.
I then pulled out my sword and tossed my weapon at another Anomaly, letting it bury itself in its head to kill it before I sunk myself into a fist fighting stance.
Ironically... Using my fists makes me stronger than just relying on a mundane weapon at this point...
The Anomalies did not know that of course, as they perceived my state of being unarmed as a sign of vulnerability and charged at me to finish me off.
Another Anomaly leapt towards me and I punched it away, watching in satisfaction as it was sent flying up into the air where it reached a height that was similar to the building beside us.
Two tried to lunge at me from both sides so I reached out my hands and grabbed them by their throats, using their bodies to smash a few other Anomalies around me until their bodies broke apart like clay.
I then tossed the bodies aside and smashed my fist into another Anomaly before turning to smash my other fist into another one, sending both of them flying off and bursting open like pinatas.
An Anomaly actually managed to jump on my back and it tried to bite my shoulder, only for there to be a loud crack as a few of its teeth snapped off from trying to bite down on me.
It froze up when it realised that it couldn’t actually hurt me and it was now within range of me instead.
I didn’t hesitate as I reached behind and grabbed its head, squeezing it between my fingers to make it pop like a pimple before tossing its corpse away.
I worked my way through the throng of Anomalies, smashing them apart with my fists and legs and turning this part of the battlefield into a mass of broken bodies and torn limbs.
Occasionally, I would turn back to check if the small group was doing ok and they don’t seem to be struggling at least.
Since bullets could also take them down, most of the Anomalies were being gunned down before they could reach the front of the group anyway.
Coupled with the fact that Liliac was also making use of the plants around the street to tie up several of the Anomalies and turn them into vine cocoons, they were doing just fine.
Yeah, even without me here, I’m pretty sure these two would have handled it perfectly fine.
If only one of them was here with these Vanguards as backup, they might struggle a little but I’m pretty sure they would still be able to complete the recon expedition pretty well without my help anyway.
Sending three people here was definitely a luxury that only we could afford right now because we have so many Guardians.
A bigger sized wolf monkey Anomaly suddenly leapt out from one of the taller buildings, smashing into the pavement and causing it to crater slightly.
It let out a roar of challenge and started rushing towards me, no doubt intending to take me out.
Several of the Vanguards turned their attention to it and tried to shoot it, thinking I was in trouble.
Unfortunately, it seemed like it had a thicker hide as the bullets merely left small wounds on its body and the Anomaly showed no signs of slowing down or being in pain as it continued its charge.
"He’s mine!" I shouted out, indicating they should stop shooting at it or I would get hit too. Not that it would matter either since I could probably tank the shots as well.
I did a running jump towards the Anomaly and both of us pulled our fists back at the same time, punching out to let our fists meet in the centre with a resounding bang.
There was no competition as my fist did not even slow down as I crushed through the Anomaly’s hand, shattering the limb and the bones underneath with a loud crack and turning its arm into a useless piece of meat dangling on its shoulder.
It let out a roar of pain which was quickly silenced when I gave it an uppercut, smashing my fist against the bottom of its jaw and separating its head from its neck.
There was a spray of blood before the Anomaly wobbled to fall backwards, crashing onto the ground with a loud thud.
I looked around after the Anomaly fell to see that the rest of the Anomalies were also dead, leaving the street filled with the corpses of the dead Anomalies.
I turned back and started walking to the group, intending on congratulating them for the good work only to see the Vanguards averting their gaze from me with what I thought was fear.
I was wondering why they would be scared of me like that when Dan cleared his throat, "Ahem... Dude, you’re covered with blood and stuff."
That made me look down at myself and, sure enough, I was covered in the blood of the Anomalies I smashed and I was probably quite a bloody sight.
What am I supposed to do then? It’s just blood!
