Two hours later, Ye Yu and Zhu Xincheng, together with Xiaocui, had already arrived at the entrance to Lieyang Gate.
Here, Ye Yu glanced again at Zhu Xincheng.
After thinking it over along the way, he ultimately chose to remain reserved.
To actively demand a thank-you gift would feel somewhat inappropriate.
Besides, in Old Ge’s lifetime, the two of them had been like sworn brothers, slapping each other on the shoulder and joking together.
By that reckoning, Ye Yu was actually of an uncle’s generation to Zhu Xincheng.
How could an elder fret over trifles with a junior?
So, he left it to fate.
He believed Zhu Xincheng was not stingy.
In fact, Ye Yu did not realize that his behavior had already caused a misunderstanding between Zhu Xincheng and Xiaocui.
The two exchanged thoughts again by voice-transmission.
“Sect Lord, our benefactor looked at you again. See — liking someone can’t be hidden.”
“All right, stop. Let’s talk after we enter the Divine Alliance.”
Though Zhu Xincheng said this, her eyes grew all the brighter.
Only at that moment did she finally understand why her mother, Li Mu, would smile whenever she spoke of Old Ge.
As Xiaocui had said, love could not be concealed.
Even a single glance, or merely mentioning his name, filled the heart with joy.
But why wouldn’t Ye Yu make the first move?
Did she really have to be the one to make things clear?
It was, frankly, a little embarrassing.
Zhu Xincheng’s feelings grew complicated.
Women in love tended to be anxious and insecure.
At that moment, two divine clan guards stationed at the gate saw Zhu Xincheng and Xiaocui approaching; their expressions instantly turned terrified.
They were frozen in place, at a loss.
Xiaocui noticed their odd behavior immediately.
She stepped forward and said in a low voice, “Tong Yao, Li Kunshan, what are you two doing? Did you forget to salute the Sect Lord?”
At the sound of this, Tong Yao hurriedly cupped his hands and bowed, “Greetings, Sect Lord. I became distracted just now; please forgive me.”
As he spoke, he even nudged Li Kunshan with his toe.
The latter quickly cupped his hands and bowed as well, but his face looked flustered.
Their demeanor puzzled Xiaocui.
However, having not returned to the Divine Alliance for over a thousand years, Xiaocui said nothing further.
She assumed Lieyang Gate had simply grown lax in recent times.
Zhu Xincheng paid little heed to their reaction; her mind was full of schemes on how to make things clear with Ye Yu.
Nothing else mattered.
She waved lightly and walked directly into Lieyang Gate, Ye Yu and Xiaocui following close behind.
The three figures soon disappeared into the light curtain.
Watching them go, Li Kunshan could not help speaking, “Tong ge, what on earth is going on? Weren’t we told the Sect Lord had already fallen? How has she returned now?”
Tong Yao’s face turned pale as he lowered his voice, “How would I know why she’s returned?”
Li Kunshan glanced with lingering fear at the light curtain swallowing them, and said in a trembling voice, “So are we just going to stand here and let them in?”
“Of course.” Tong Yao answered. “If we try to stop them with only the two of us, what can we do? If we block the Sect Lord, we’ll be annihilated in less than a breath. Some problems can’t be solved by us — let those inside deal with them.”
Tong Yao turned to look at the curtain, then produced the communication stone from his storage ring and began reporting the situation to the higher-ups inside.
Inside the Lieyang Gate main hall.
A young man sat prominently in the central seat. To his left and right were eight Lieyang Gate elders. They drank and joked, treating one another as brothers, while maidens performed in front of them.
It was lively in the extreme.
At that moment, Fifth Elder Fang Lijin stood and raised his cup to speak, but his expression changed abruptly when the communication stone inside his storage ring began to ring. He took it out, poured divine power into it, and held it to his ear — the smile vanished from his face without a trace.
His right hand trembled so badly he could not even keep hold of the communication stone; it slipped from his palm and clattered to the ground.
A few elders nearby sneered, “Old Fang, looks like you’ve drunk too much today — you can’t even hold your comm stone. Why don’t you go home and rest instead of embarrassing yourself?”
“From what I hear, Old Fang has taken a seventh Dao-mate; word is she’s stunningly beautiful. No wonder he’s lost his head,” another elder added, teasing.
Fang Lijin showed no amusement. He murmured under his breath, “Zhu Xincheng has returned. She has just arrived at the Divine Alliance.”
The words were so soft as to be nearly inaudible, but to the elders present they fell like thunder.
They halted the merry banquet as if someone had pressed pause.
“How — how is that possible? Weren’t we told she had perished? How could she be back?”
“Old Fang, is your information reliable?”
“Why ask that foolish question at this point? If it were false, would Old Fang’s face look like that? What we should be asking now is what we are going to do.”
“What can we do?” several elders muttered, panic in their eyes, but all of them involuntarily glanced at the young man in the central seat.
He seemed not to have heard anything; he continued drinking as if to himself.
At this moment, Zhu Xincheng, Xiaocui, and Ye Yu had already arrived at the main hall’s doorway.
When Zhu Xincheng took in the scene, her expression chilled visibly.
All along, the Lieyang Gate main hall had been her exclusive training ground.
Other elders were never allowed here without summons.
Now, after being gone only a few days, people dared to gather here openly?
That was bad enough, but the most infuriating thing was that the seat symbolizing the Sect Lord was now occupied by a stranger.
The irony was unbearable.
Zhu Xincheng lifted an eyebrow and asked coldly, “Are you rebelling?”
Those few words caused the elders present to bow their heads; some trembled and immediately dropped to their knees.
The young man in the central seat tossed his cup aside, clapped his hands, stood up, and said coldly, “All of you, stand up. No kneeling!”
