She’s eyes were red, her lips pressed tight, stubbornly refusing to let herself cry. She stopped Xiao Rou from moving: "Don’t, it’s cold. You keep it on, I’m fine."

"Cheng Chen..."

Xiao Rou was so anxious she was about to cry, but She just hugged herself stubbornly, refusing to shed a single tear.

Her chest ached, ached badly, but it wasn’t because she’d been splashed with water, nor because she’d been misunderstood, and even less because she’d become everyone’s target.

She’d never cared how other people saw her, but just now, she really, really cared how Xi Siyan saw her.

Watching Xi Siyan look at her with that complicated gaze, then look away, She felt her heart turn so, so cold, colder than that basin of cold water.

Downstairs in the classroom.

The teacher on the podium looked at She’s empty seat and frowned: "Did She and Xiao Rou ask for leave today?"

No one answered. The teacher’s brows knitted tighter as he looked at the two class monitors: "Where’s the class monitor?"

You Ran’s eyes were red as she spoke softly: "I don’t know."

The other male class monitor, the boy who had just spoken up for You Ran, answered honestly: "No, they didn’t ask for leave."

"She’s getting more and more out of line. If she’s not sleeping in class, she’s not handing in homework, and now she even dares to skip class. I have to call her parents in for a good talk."

As he spoke, he drew a heavy cross over She’s student number.

Xi Siyan looked at the empty seat beside him, his brows furrowing again.

Just now, seeing her drenched from head to toe through the crowd, Xi Siyan had already felt a bit irritable. Then, seeing how aggressive she was, he got a little angry again. He couldn’t even say what he was angry about, just that he was.

In that instant, he had a sudden impulse to go over and pull her into his arms and shield her properly.

But he held it back. The thought was too crazy. Xi Siyan had always minded his own business and didn’t like getting involved in those messy class affairs. Yet now, looking at her empty seat, the agitation in his chest only grew.

The hand holding his pen tightened and tightened again. In weather this cold, she was still wearing wet clothes—would she end up like last time, with a forty-degree fever?

The moment this thought flashed through Xi Siyan’s mind, he abruptly stood up.

In an instant, every gaze in the class focused on him.

The teacher on the podium looked over as well: "Is something wrong?"

Xi Siyan’s face was stern as he spoke: "Teacher, my stomach hurts. I want to go to the restroom."

He was the typical good student—excellent grades, high IQ, and obedient—the kind of student teachers liked best.

So with him, teachers’ attitudes were usually fairly good.

"Alright, go ahead."

Xi Siyan strode out of the classroom and stood for a moment in the empty corridor, then lifted his feet and headed upstairs.

He didn’t know where She would be, he was just going on instinct.

Pushing open the rusted iron door, he immediately saw the two little girls curled up in the corner. She’s clothes were tossed aside, her whole face flushed red from the cold. Xi Siyan’s heart clenched sharply, and the anger and agitation inside him seemed to hit a peak.

By the time he came back to his senses, he was already standing in front of She and Xiao Rou.

There were still tear tracks on Xiao Rou’s face as she stared at him, tongue-tied, while She kept her head lowered, eyes rimmed red but still not crying.

"Xi... Xi..."

Just as Xiao Rou was about to speak, Xi Siyan had already shrugged off his down jacket and wrapped it tightly around She from head to toe.
