When morning came, Adam and his father checked out of the hotel, heading for the academy. It took a bit of time since the lobby was packed, but they eventually left.
His father got something light for Adam to have as breakfast in the vehicle.
The night before had been a tense one for him, and he barely had any sleep. Rather than waste it staring at nothing, he used that time to study. And through it all, his father had been by his side, quizzing him on what he read.
To Jonathan’s shock, Adam recalled and explained the concepts with such ease and understanding that he doubted if Adam was truly the same Adam. His intelligence was simply off the charts.
Adam had improved leaps and bounds since his awakening. He liked the new feeling of reading and actually understanding what he read. It came so easily to him that it felt like he was cheating.
But one thing he noticed was that his Knowledge Indexes grew at an incredibly slow rate. The subcategories themselves only saw marginal increases. But they were still more than enough to grant him the power to make new abilities.
This made him realise that the concepts themselves were incredibly profound. He was just scratching the surface; there was a lot more he could do. Another observation he made was that he picked up faster when he experimented and observed rather than read.
Reading paved the way for practice, and practice paved the way for synthesising the abilities he desired.
"We’re here." Jon’s voice pulled Adam out of his thoughts.
Adam looked out the window and marvelled at what he saw. Crossing through the wall tunnel into the academy felt like he was crossing into an entirely new place and world.
The rest of the journey to the first point of contact became smooth sailing along the other vehicles. Under the road bridge was a wide river extending into the far distance.
’The Federation really spared no expense building this place.’ Adam thought in amazement. ’This place is just too big!’
Within twenty minutes of driving, they arrived at the admission block. The two had to make the rest of the journey on foot. North Star’s admission block stood imposingly under the light of the sun, the sleek design of the building making some of the potential students feel intimidated.
"What do you think?" Jon asked as he glanced at his son.
"Honestly, it’s excessively massive." Adam shared his true thoughts. "Just what’s within these walls?"
"You’ll find out soon enough," Jon added with a knowing smile. "The academy purposely kept most of the information about it offline. You’ll have to attend to truly appreciate the place."
"Is that necessary?" Adam asked, not entirely convinced.
"Well, if you want other federations to know what’s going on within these walls, then no," Jon explained.
"The students could simply blabber their mouths when they go out, no?" Adam asked curiously, not seeing the logic behind such arrangements.
"Understandably." Jon agreed with a nod and then added. "But from what I heard, they have their own method of telling. Remember, there are abilities even I haven’t heard about. So keep an open mind."
Adam accepted the explanation with a thoughtful expression. Indeed, there were affinities he had never heard of. A perfect example was himself. There was no reason to think there couldn’t be others like his.
The duo soon made it to the admission hall along with the other potential students. As his father had said, he needed to keep an open mind. He might have a broken affinity, but others could eliminate him should he let his guard down.
Inside the massive admission hall flowing with hundreds of people, Jonathan followed the floating instructions above and led Adam to join one of the queues.
While waiting for their turn, Adam calmly observed. He could feel the tension in the air. Some of the teenagers looked strong outwardly, while others appeared calm and collected, but their presence stood out jarringly.
’Some of these guys are incredibly strong.’ Adam noted calmly, a fire lighting within him. ’This is going to be fun.’
He flashed a small smile and turned away. Soon, it got to their turn. The official behind the desk asked for Adam’s preliminary registration pass before he passed a brochure to Adam’s father and explained.
"This brochure contains all the information your child needs to know in order to make a choice. Once that is taken care of, he can proceed to the other section and register." The official pointed to his back, where many were already making their way towards.
"Thank you," Jon said and left the queue with Adam, quietly reading through the brochure. A minute later, he passed it to Adam.
Adam quickly read through the brochure, nodding as he absorbed the information. ’Looks reasonable.’
The brochure basically explained the four class types the academy used. The first and most popular one was the combat and exploration class, where awakeners focused more on perfecting their combat abilities with their awakened abilities.
The second one was a combination of combat and sciences, where students pursued the art of researching and fighting. It was the hardest class and demanded a lot from the students. It also had the highest drop rate amongst the four class types.
In every track, it saw the most students dropping the class. But rather than taking all the sciences, it allowed for specification. Of course, there was also the option of taking all the sciences, but it was very rare to find more than five students taking that option.
The third was the sciences. And unlike the second class type, this one focused purely on research with little to no combat. The fourth class type was for grooming officials in the art of fighting, leading, and governing. It had the most elite heirs within.
There was a place for everyone, but each class type had a limit to the number of students it could take. Adam already knew what he was going to choose, as did his father.
This was exactly why Jon wanted his son to come here. The academies back home could not offer this level of versatility, and their resources could not match North Star either.
Adam lowered the brochure and looked at his father. "I know what I want to do..."
"Come on," Jon flashed a small smile and led Adam to register. He had no doubt Adam would succeed.
The evaluation had two parts: one written and one practical. Everyone was required to take both tests.
