While Others Evolved, I Understood Reality

’Shit!’

Adam’s body moved before conscious thought caught up. He completely forgot that there were instructors hidden all around them, keenly watching whenever they tangled with danger.

There was no time to waste; April was already falling.

Leaping onto the cliff once more, Adam climbed the rocks with the agility of a spider, his hands and feet barely securing a hold before seamlessly shifting to the next. With his eyes glued onto the falling girl who was already in range, he jumped after her.

Reaching her, Adam wrapped his hands around April and spun, the act intended to minimise the force of his jump on the girl. His reaction from the moment he moved to this point was purely instinctual. As such, Adam did not realise how ridiculous what he had done was until April was in his arms.

But now was not the time to be impressed.

The stone ground was fast approaching, and there was only one way to avoid becoming a pile of broken bones and flesh. The Spark flowing through his body came to life, his affinity moulding the essence into the element he desired.

Right before his creation came to life, Adam adjusted his hold on April, repositioning her in a princess carry. The move snapped the shaken girl out of her shocked state, her arms naturally falling around Adam’s neck.

A sudden gust of powerful wind shot out of Adam’s lower body, swirling around until it formed a mini tornado, greatly slowing down their fall. It took a lot of focus just to get the wind from the twister, but he got it done in the spur of the moment.

When he got close enough to the ground to land without breaking his bones, the twister scattered as he landed with a heavy thud. Adam gritted his teeth as the shock travelled up his body.

"You alright?"

Adam looked at the girl in his arms and asked, slowly letting her down. But April only stared at him like she was in a daze. Then a sudden smile bloomed across her face.

"Are you trying to make me fall for you? Because it might be working." Her response caught Adam off guard.

He had only acted on instinct and had no ulterior motives. Then again, he could more or less understand what she meant. He took a careful look at the pink-haired girl, his thoughts spiralling. However, before he could say another word, April continued.

"Hehe. Relax, genius. I’m just messing with you." April chuckled at Adam’s hesitant expression. "And I’m fine. I have you to thank once again. Though your using the wind element came with its own shock. It makes me wonder just what abilities you wield in that body of yours."

"It’s just so-so." Adam swiftly downplayed the question and looked away, his gaze drifting to where the raptor lay. But then, April’s question got him curious as well. He turned to her and asked. "What about you? I don’t believe I’ve seen you use your awakened ability."

"Well... I could tell you..." April’s gaze wandered upwards, her index finger tapping her chin as though she was mulling over the question. "...but it’s a secret. Hehe. Just know that it’s not designed for fighting; at least not in the typical way one would think of."

Adam stared at the sheepishly smiling girl and shook his head. He had nothing more to say to that. After all, he was hiding a lot more than anyone could possibly imagine. Turning around, he made his way towards the raptor, April following close behind him.

At the moment, however, her gaze towards Adam had completely changed. Never could she have imagined that Adam would be a multi-elemental user. More than that, however, was the fact that he was impressively daring.

She had thought her end was near, as she had no way to counteract her fall with her ability. April knew an instructor would have stepped in as she was about to make contact with the ground.

She had been ready to be eliminated. But Adam had to step in the way he did. April flashed a charming smile as she stared at Adam’s broad back. He was really impressive and nothing like those arrogant heirs she knew.

With this newfound understanding of who Adam was, April made a silent promise to deepen her connection with him. Having an ally like Adam would be more beneficial for someone like her. And there was no telling what other abilities he had in hiding.

"Thank God. It’s still alive... But just barely."

Adam’s voice snapped her out of her swirling thoughts. Adam had crouched beside the barely breathing raptor, carefully looking at it. The falcon was as big as a boar, its wingspan almost four meters long.

"Having second thoughts now?" Adam looked over his shoulder and asked with a knowing smile.

"Hmm..." The pink-haired girl nodded with a bright smile. "I guess our luck is good."

"Indeed..."

Adam nodded and went about lifting the raptor over his shoulders, careful not to get blood all over his body. Once properly secured over his shoulders, he looked at April and gestured for her to follow. The duo made their way towards the stream, the morning sun casting its warmth across the land.

Arriving at the stream, Adam lowered the raptor and stood still. Although he was a fairly good cook, without the proper ingredients and equipment, prepping the raptor would prove a bit challenging.

’I can use the wind element as a blade, but...’

Adam sighed as he looked around. A few applicants were scattered about, some even looking in his direction. He ignored them and focused on his predicament.

Without seasoning, especially salt, the raptor meat would taste bland. Then again, what choice did he have? ’I should stock my storage space with all kinds of things when I get the chance. Better yet, I should understand how to synthesise them myself.’

Turning to look at April, he directed, "Gather some wood we can use for the fire, please."

"Of course," April nodded and got to work.

Looking at the raptor once more, Adam swallowed. He had never killed anything before. He felt a bit apprehensive, but the soft rumbling of his stomach said otherwise. ’I will have to kill eventually. Doing it now is a lot better than when in a life-or-death situation.’

Crouching once more, Adam focused his Spark and envisioned a spinning wind blade in his hand, carefully manifesting the creation into the real world. With one powerful swipe, he decapitated the raptor.

Momentarily closing his eyes, Adam swallowed the lump in his throat and then reopened his eyes. He had done it in one strike, and it wasn’t as bad as he had imagined. He then got to preparing the meat.

And just like that, his hunger was about to be satiated. Unknown to him, however, this food of his would be attracting a lot of attention.
