While Others Evolved, I Understood Reality

"You should be more worried about us!"

Adam narrowed his eyes as he marked his opponents. Derek and Ryner were determined to keep him engaged for as long as possible.

’This is troublesome,’ Adam thought in frustration. ’I might have to show more than I initially planned.’

Ryner, being the fastest of the two, was the first to get within attacking distance of Adam. Unfortunately for him, Adam was done playing around.

Before Ryner could even throw another attack at Adam, Adam’s body flickered and disappeared. In a flash, he appeared behind Ryner and struck him with a knife-hand to the neck, knocking him out.

The golden-haired boy had barely collapsed when Adam vanished once more, his speed beyond any opponent around. Derek’s eyes widened as he lost sight of his opponent. But he reacted faster than Ryner. From his body came an explosion of green mist, the move intended to keep Adam at a distance.

Sadly for him, Adam never considered the poison lethal. With a burst of flames, he vapourised the poisonous mist and appeared before wide-eyed Derek. A heavy blow to the head drove him into the embrace of darkness.

Silence settled across the plain as every applicant looked on with wide eyes. They had witnessed an applicant take down two elite heirs like they were nothing. The greater shock, however, came from his sheer speed.

"Is-Is he really a recent awakener like the rest of us?"

"Don’t know. I might have guessed he had a physical affinity, but he’s a dual element holder. That speed makes no sense, even with the wind element."

"You aren’t still thinking of approaching his meat, right?"

Everyone had paused in their tracks as they watched Adam calmly return to where April sat. Some looked at him with caution. Others looked at him with a deep frown, their fists clenched.

"I guess my warning was unnecessary," April said smugly as Adam sat back down. "You’re really impressive, Adam." The look in her eyes had grown intense, as though she had just found something exceedingly precious.

"It’s nothing." Adam downplayed the issue and then asked. "Do you still want more meat?"

The pink-haired girl nodded with a sweet smile. Adam acknowledged and got back to cutting a bigger piece for April before cutting another piece for himself.

"Hey there..."

A short girl with a high ponytail approached the two with a smile and a wave. "That was quite the demonstration. You don’t usually see many people with dual elements. Hehe."

Silence returned to the plain as everyone watched the interaction in anticipation. Should she succeed, they would stand a chance of getting a bite of his meat. Maybe the boy wasn’t so bad.

Adam looked at the girl with a raised brow. "What do you want?"

"Ah, sorry." The girl whispered, her eyes darting to the meat on the grill. "I was wondering if you could share some of your meat with me."

Her stomach let out a soft grumble in response. The girl’s face flushed red as she looked away, embarrassed at the betrayal of her stomach.

Adam revealed a small smile before replying, "I’m sorry, but no. This meat is for me and my friend here, and it’s supposed to last us the entire three days."

"A little bit is fine." The girl tried again, but Adam shook his head.

"You can’t be that stingy, can you?"

Another voice chipped in from behind. Adam glanced over and frowned. And before he could reiterate his stance, a few more expressed their unwanted views.

"Yeah, man. You can share a piece with everyone and still have a bit more left. We’re all trying to complete this survival trial just like you. You’re one of us; you should understand what we’re going through."

"Who knows?" Another said with a casual shrug. "A little act of kindness might push you above all of us. And you know what they say... sharing is caring. What do you say?"

"..."

Adam listened to their misconstrued opinions and inwardly sneered. ’Right... Some of you have no qualms robbing others, yet here you stand, preaching to me about kindness.’

But there was a problem.

He knew they could overwhelm him should he maintain his stance. They seemed reasonable for now, but most of them were ready to use force if necessary. He might be stronger than them, but he was still one man.

’I cannot possibly hold all of them back.’

Adam thought as he scrutinised the other applicants. He glanced at April, noticing the worried expression on her face. She seemed to have also arrived at the same conclusion. Things were not looking good for him.

’That leaves me with only one option...’

Shifting his gaze from the pink-haired girl, Adam rose to his feet. The other applicants looked at him expectantly, silently waiting for his response. He met their gazes and finally replied.

"Well... You might be right. A little act of kindness can go a long way. No one said we couldn’t survive tog—"

"You...!"

Before Adam could continue his bullshitting, an enraged bellow echoed, prompting everyone to look. Ryner had woken up and was beyond pissed. He recklessly charged at Adam without hesitation, his body crackling with golden lightning.

’Bingo!’

Adam flashed a cunning grin as he effortlessly evaded the reckless charge. Ryner zoomed past him in a blur, drawing everyone’s attention along. While they were momentarily distracted, Adam grabbed the meat and swung it over his shoulder and took off.

’Ouch! Hot! Hot!’

Adam hissed as he dashed past the shocked students. But the burn did not slow him down. Not even a little.

"Hey...! He’s running away with the meat!" Someone quickly saw him and bellowed.

"Stop him!"

At the call to arms, an army of hungry students chased after Adam. Left behind, April could only gawk at Adam’s actions. He was leaving her behind! She shot to her feet and chased after the others, grumbling under her breath.

Meanwhile, Ryner, who had been ignored and humiliated before the others and everyone watching, gritted his teeth in rage. Golden lightning crackled around his body as he screamed Adam’s name in pure, unbridled fury.

"ADAM...!!"
