Half an hour later, Adam returned to his room.
The conversation he had with those girls and guys had reminded him of his grim situation. He spent a bit more time chatting with them about other miscellaneous stuff while avoiding anything related to his situation.
Naturally, he made sure to get the details about the party. But as things stood, he wasn’t sure he would attend.
Collapsing into the double sofa, Adam sighed with a distant look on his face. He suddenly jerked on the sofa, annoyed at his situation.
’Damn it! I’m too young to be thinking about complex things!’ With another sigh, he glanced at the side table, staring at the booklet. ’Haa... I might as well get this over with.’
He lazily leaned over and grabbed the booklet. He was far from exhausted since he had rested throughout the day. The booklet contained the rules and regulations pertaining to the dormitory and academy itself. He took his time browsing the rules, making sure to commit them to memory.
The task was an easy one given his new talents and affinity. And it was best to do so. He didn’t want a situation where the rules could be used against him simply because he was ignorant of them.
The rules were as one would expect from a learning institution. They were neither restricting nor lenient. Rules around the dormitory revolved around tidiness and activities relating to the opposite sex. Though it did not explicitly say anything about having visitors. It also explicitly warned against the use of abilities in the dormitory.
Then again, what no one saw harmed no one.
As for the academy, the booklet hinted at locations inaccessible to students. Fighting was mostly disallowed, but it had room for when challenges were issued.
’So expect bullying.’
It was an easy loophole to see. The academy was an institution of learning and adaptation. If one could not defend themselves or manoeuvre out of complex situations, then they might as well call it quits and head home.
And, of course, disciplinary action was handled by the student council. Most matters relating to student troubles and activities went through the student council, and only when they could not deal with it would it go to the academy’s administration.
"They’re reasonable enough."
Adam muttered softly and closed the booklet, tossing it back onto the side table. He looked around his room for a moment, thinking of what to do to pass the time. His Knowledge Indexes suddenly came to mind, shifting his gaze towards his desk.
Rising to his feet, he walked toward his desk, pulling out the chair to do some studying. Before that, however, he pulled out a notepad and made a list of items and stuff to buy for tomorrow.
"And a daily routine will go a long way."
Since the academy had training halls, he might as well take advantage of the gym section, which was free and available to everyone in the academy. The only downside was that people like them barely got anything out of lifting weights.
Once he took care of those, he got to browsing through the computer to see its capabilities. The specs were moderately high and had access to an online library he could read from.
It was almost perfect, except for access to high-end knowledge and research data. Those could only be gotten in said departments. Adam found it reasonable, as there was a risk of security breach from student computers.
As he looked through the library of knowledge, he thought back to his Knowledge Indexes. "I’m lacking in the material, chemical and information departments."
His material and chemical indexes were especially important as those two would raise his understanding toward the creation of solid and liquid state matter. Flames, wind, and even lightning were good, but to be able to create weapons and other essentials, he needed to know how to make solid matter.
His physical strength and speed were already above his colleagues. Adding blood manipulation and cellular augmentation to the mix would increase his physicals even further. As such, he could afford to relax in that department.
Adam got to work as he read everything around his Knowledge Indexes. The beauty of it was that other fields showed slight improvements even when they were not the target.
He spent hours reading through anything and everything he had access to. When he finally looked at the time, it was long past midnight. Adam leaned back in his chair and sighed, rubbing his eyes.
"Haa... the progress is too slow."
The greatest improvement he had seen in the two indexes he focused on was 2.14%. It was no small improvement, but Adam could not see it. To him, it was too slow.
"Maybe looking at the actual thing would do more good," Adam muttered as he stared blankly at the ceiling.
He raised his hand, channelling his Spark as he created wind, swirling the element between his fingers. His mind circled through all the principles that helped him in creating the wind element.
’Wind isn’t just the difference between atmospheric pressure and heat. It’s a combination of multiple gases, each with their own properties and proportions. Combining them in different ratios will most definitely make different variations. But it can also be taken further... That girl’s wind element had the properties of vibrations.’
Naturally, the source of his creation came from the essence known as Spark. It flowed through all matter, integrating with it like it had always been there. To him and everyone else, nothing existed without a trace of Spark in it.
Adam played around with the wind element, switching up the proportions to catalogue the variations he made, eventually ending up with a small sphere in his palm. Inspiration hit him at that moment, prompting him to switch it up, adding heat to the mix.
The temperature spiked immediately, slapping him in the face like a warm blanket. But he kept increasing the heat, steadily raising the temperature. The sphere spun faster, his unique perception allowing him to see what was happening at a deeper level.
Adam’s heart began to race, the realisation of what he was creating dawning on him. He gulped but never slowed down. The temperature climbed higher, warping the surrounding light around the heated air.
’I could get in trouble for this.’
The thought came unbidden. He knew this could explode in his face, but he didn’t want to stop. Success was just around the corner; he couldn’t stop now.
The temperature in his room increased to maddening levels, the air electrically charged. His immediate surroundings got the worst of it, but Adam’s focus was entirely on the sphere in his hand.
But there was more... his Spark was draining fast. Too fast, in fact. He had more than three times what those at his level should have, another benefit his unique physique granted. The strain of holding the structure together began to show on his face.
Suddenly, the heated air took on a blend of mesmerising hues that reflected across the room. Adam smiled through the strain as he touched upon the precipice of success.
"A-Almost there..."
All that was left was to stabilise his creation. But that was easier said than done. Forcing a process he had poor understanding and control over could only lead to one outcome.
"Shit!"
BOOM!
The unstable plasma blew up in his face. Adam grunted as the force pushed him out of the chair, hurtling him toward his bed. He stumbled over the soft mattress and onto the floor, groaning.
The hidden alarms went off in an instant, the irritating sound waking the entire dormitory. Adam silently cursed his rashness, feeling a burning sensation on his face and chest.
Grabbing at his chest, he felt the hotness of his skin, the explosion burning most of the shirt away. He lowered his gaze to see his chest red and inflamed.
"Ugh... I knew it."
Adam had barely been in the dormitory for one day, and had already broken one of its rules.
