Asher Princeton has had his hands full dealing with the new batch of first-years. He had to make sure everything they needed was in order before their orientation in a few days.
In all honesty, he didn’t think he would find himself this dedicated after so many years. This was not the first batch of students he was put in charge of, but it was the first batch he was truly excited about.
After all, he had taken his very first student, Adam. The boy was truly a wonder. Even he was not sure why he felt that way about the boy. He was already in the midst of making a training plan for him.
’Is this what it feels like to have a son?’
The thought had occurred to him randomly at some point. Asher did not think too deeply into the matter. But he did trust his intuition about the boy.
He was sure there was more to the boy than the boy actually revealed. Although curious, he was not going to force the boy. They all had their secrets, after all.
Sure, there was the Spencer boy. But that boy already had a family with all the resources he would need, unlike Adam.
Imagine his surprise when the dorm master called him in the middle of the night, complaining about the trouble his disciple had caused. It was truly unexpected, as in less than a day, Adam had already found himself in trouble.
Asher knew the penalty for the trouble Adam had caused. Fortunately for this new disciple of his, his name had shielded him. Though it came with a small favour attached. While reluctant, he agreed to the woman’s demand.
He chose to see the incident as his very first act of protecting his student. Asher was still new to the whole master-student thing, but he found it fulfilling and had prepared his first gift for him.
While taking care of a few pieces of paperwork, his secretary rushed into his office with a tab in her hand.
"Mr Princeton, you need to see this," she stated as she placed the tab on the table, her composure immaculate.
Asher picked up the tab and leaned back. However, before he could relax, he leaned forward, his elbows pressing the desk. "What am I looking at?"
On the tab was a live video about some incident on a flyover. But that was not the issue; it was the familiar face he spotted in the crowd. His disciple was barely in any clothes while standing in the midst of burning car debris.
"That’s the boy you told me about, isn’t he?" The woman stated more than asked. When he did not reply, she continued. "Word in the comment section is that he caused an explosion in the car he was in with his friends."
"That can’t be right," Asher debunked the theory. "He just got here from another city. And if I’m right, that flyover is ways away from the academy."
"That is correct, sir. That’s close to The Twilight District." The woman nodded as she pushed her glasses up. "He’s obviously found himself in trouble."
Asher narrowed his eyes suspiciously. The situation did not sit right with him. If this was a normal situation, he would turn a blind eye, as growth came in many ways. But something was at play here.
The academy line rang at that moment. He swiftly picked it up and asked, "What is it?"
[A call from a concerned party says one of our students has found themselves in trouble on a flyover towards The Twilight District.]
"The Twilight District?" Asher’s eyes fell on the tab in his hand. "What’s the situation?"
[The report says the student claims to have been abducted. A team is being dispatched to the location now.]
"Thank you for bringing this to my attention." Asher ended the call before a reply could come.
’They’re already making their move?’ he internally questioned, as it felt too rash.
"The police should be there in no time, sir. I’m sure he will be fine." said the secretary.
"Let’s hope so."
[Ahh...!]
[Boom!]
[Run...!]
Asher’s words had barely landed when screams from the live video caught their attention. Something else was happening.
He shot to his feet in an instant, his focus sharpening. From the little he could see in the blurry video, a line of black vans was approaching with a man wearing a black tactical skull mask. The live stream got cut off at that moment, as the person had taken to running.
"I’m going." Asher declared as he reached for his suit jacket.
"Wouldn’t that be too much, sir? The police will handle it. And the academy also has a dedicated team for situations like this."
Asher looked at his secretary as he made his way towards the door. "He’s my student, Kara, my disciple. I’m not leaving his safety to chance. And I made a promise to his father."
He disappeared right after, leaving a sighing secretary behind. Kara knew the man well enough to understand his temperament. He was definitely going to overdo it. Whoever was behind the incident would definitely cry tears of blood.
The moment Asher appeared at the entrance of the first-year administration building, he took off with a burst of blinding speed. As a space affinity holder, he could fold space and cut his running speed short.
Within seconds, he was already at the tunnel entrance of the academy. He wasted no time combining short teleports with his running speed. He moved so fast that very few could even process that something or someone had rushed past them.
’Hold on, Adam... Your master is on his way,’ he thought in hopes his student was fine.
Asher knew only the elites who could be responsible for the attempt on his disciple. The problem was knowing the exact person or group behind it. Anyone else would have immediately pointed to the three Adam had humiliated, but Asher knew better.
Although they were not entirely exonerated, those who sought to take advantage of Adam were numerous. Some would want to force him into slave contracts or make him into puppets. Those with talents and no backing were the most susceptible to such schemes.
Killing was usually a last or desperate attempt when all things failed.
’I’ll have to announce his status as my student to the rest of the world.’ It would not stop everyone, but it would at least make most of them think twice before they made a move.
Several minutes later, the sound of police sirens, screams and chaos reached his ears. Asher narrowed his eyes as he arrived on the flyover in a flash, startling the officers and health workers.
"Don’t move!"
"Identify yourself!"
Several officers swiftly pulled out their handguns and pointed them at him. A beat of silence fell over the flyover as everyone looked on with varying expressions.
"Wait!"
A senior officer who seemed to have recognised Asher and the brooch on his jacket raised the alert to halt and rushed towards him.
"Where are they?" Asher asked without even bothering to acknowledge the guns pointed at him.
"They went in that direction." The senior officer looked back and pointed. "The Special Unit is on their trail."
Asher vanished the moment the officer turned and pointed in the direction he sought, not waiting to hear the rest. This might perhaps be his first true act as Adam’s master. He only hoped he wasn’t too late.
