Asher vanished with Adam before the criminals could get to the room. In a flash, he reappeared with Adam in the healing department of the academy, startling everyone around.
All traces of his usual relaxed and nonchalant demeanour were gone. In its place was a cold and ruthless gaze that terrified all who saw it. He sharply turned his head to the nearest healer and ordered, "Take care of him. I’ll be back in a bit ."
He disappeared before anyone could even make sense of what was happening. The people around looked at the injured and battered boy and then at the spot the vice-principal had just disappeared from.
"All right, people. Let’s get to work before the vice-principal returns!"
It took a moment, but the healers snapped out of their shock and got to work. They recognised the boy as the one who had been captured earlier in the day, as it was all over the news.
Meanwhile, Asher reappeared in the room he had just taken Adam from. He wasted no time enacting his retaliation.
Several men had rushed in to engage the intruder, only to freeze in place when a formidable and terrifying pressure crushed down on them like a mountain.
With a casual wave of his left hand, Asher reduced them to slabs of meat. There was no need to draw his weapon against such weak people. Screams of terror and despair resounded across the underground base like a torrent of madness.
"Ahhh...!"
"Run...!!"
"Call the lieutenant!"
Many tried to charge at Asher, but barely crossed a meter when they too were reduced to slabs, collapsing onto the floor like broken dolls. Blood splattered across the space like a fountain. Wherever he passed, gruesome deaths followed.
From above came one of the criminals, channelling a wave of powerful flame balls at Asher. But the vice-principal did not even bother to look in that direction.
BOOM...!
The flames detonated with a deafening blast, shaking the underground space like an earthquake. Walls and pillars collapsed under the force of the attack, the temperature climbing to maddening levels.
And as the entire building shook, the people above froze in dread. The song died down, a beat of silence replacing the noise. When a part of the floor caved in and swallowed some people, panic broke out and spread like an infection.
What followed next was a mad rush for the exit.
"We’re under attack!"
Back in his private office, the one known as the fourth lieutenant shot to his feet and cursed, rushing towards the basement. Despite all the measures they had taken to throw off any tail, they had still been found.
The building continued to rumble and collapse at various points as different abilities were thrown at Asher to no avail. Their numbers could not close the chasm of difference that separated him from them.
When the lieutenant got to the basement, all colour drained from his face. All around the place were several of his men gruesomely butchered like cattle. And standing amidst the river of blood, bodies, and collapsed walls was the same man he had believed to have shaken off.
Asher raised his head to see the skull-masked man. He neither smiled nor spoke, his eyes dead serious. He took a step forward and appeared before the man, startling him beyond expectation.
"Lieutenant!"
The space user appeared once more, intending to escape with the lieutenant. This time, however, Asher wasn’t going to allow it. Before the space user could even touch the lieutenant, Asher grabbed him by the throat.
"Ugh!"
With a casual wave of his hand, he backhanded the lieutenant, violently sending him into the debris and bodies below. Asher then tightened his hand around the space user’s neck.
"N-No..."
The man tried to plead, but Asher paid no mind. He crushed the man’s windpipe, broke his neck and hurled him into a wall with devastating force. The wall crumbled to pieces as Asher turned his attention back to the one called lieutenant. With a thought, Asher appeared before the lieutenant.
"I’ll kill you...!"
The lieutenant roared as his body took on a silver sheen, his knuckle blades forming. In a flash, he appeared before Asher and threw a punch at his chest. The wind whistled as the blades tore through the air.
Asher calmly watched as the knuckle blades closed in on his chest. With insulting ease, he raised his left hand and caught the blades, halting them in their track. The lieutenant’s eyes widened in horror.
The man knew Asher was stronger than he was, but not this strong. That meant Asher was at least two realms above his own. Before the chilling realisation could fully set in, Asher delivered another ruthless slap across the lieutenant’s face.
"You call yourself a lieutenant." Asher finally spoke, his voice cold and devoid of emotion. "That would imply there’s more of you vermin out there."
He threw the lieutenant into another wall, causing it to come down on the man. The already unstable building shook once more, its foundation thoroughly cracked. He looked around for a moment, estimating how long the building had until it collapsed completely.
He had intentionally held back to give the people above time to escape. Whether they managed to escape or not was out of his hands.
"Hehe..."
The lieutenant let out a mocking laugh as he crawled out of the huge debris. His metallic hardening had come undone, blood running from his head all over his face. His expensive black suit was ruined and stained with blood and dirt.
Asher silently watched as the man tried to get back to his feet.
"Who knew you were this strong for a pompous bastard?" The man spoke as though he was speaking to no one in particular. He raised his bloody face and looked straight at Asher, his will burning strong.
Despite realising he had no way of defeating Asher; despite knowing he would likely die a gruesome death, he did not seem to despair. With a bloody grin, he clamoured. "But don’t you think you can—"
Sadly for him, Asher was out of patience. Before the lieutenant could get the words out, Asher closed in and swung a backhand at the man’s face, sending him crashing into a pillar.
The building shook one final time as it came down. Asher moved at that instant, appearing before the unconscious lieutenant, picked him up and vanished. His retaliation was not over by a long shot.
There was no shortage of methods he could use to get the information he wanted from the lieutenant. And once he was done extracting what he needed from the man, his vermin companions would rue the day they crossed paths with him.
