Who Says I'm Not a Proper Adventurer?

Chapter 109: A New Great Undertaking

Chapter 109: Chapter 109: A New Great Undertaking

As expected of the reigning beauty of the Gray Rock Town Adventurer’s Guild. Many male Adventurers would rather wait a little longer just to go up to the pretty, brown-haired girl and become a familiar face.

Lance decisively abandoned the thought of going over to say hello.

In his past life, he had been a miserable office worker who frequently worked overtime, so he could deeply empathize with that soul-crushing feeling of being about to clock out, only for a mountain of heavy work to suddenly appear.

On the surface, you could still manage a smile, but inside, you were already so frustrated you wanted to slam the stamp right in the customer’s face.

’As her friend, it’s better if I don’t add to her troubles.’

Lance chose a window on the edge of the hall where the line was relatively short.

Although the clerk here was a middle-aged man wearing thick glasses, the staff were all seasoned hands at processing materials. Their movements were swift and efficient as they verified credentials and paid out rewards.

The line moved quickly, and soon it was Lance’s turn.

Just as Lance poured a whole bag of reeking, bloody Goblin ears onto the counter to be tallied, Cecilia stood quietly to the side, waiting.

Just then, a cheerful voice suddenly called out from the back of the hall.

"Cecilia!"

The sudden shout startled the young woman, making her jump.

She instinctively grabbed the edges of her hood with both hands, pulling it down tightly, terrified that her Half-Elf ears would be exposed and attract attention.

Only after completing this defensive gesture did she cautiously turn her head and look toward the source of the voice.

A familiar figure squeezed through the crowd.

It was her roommate, Yuna.

Yuna’s outfit today was completely different from how she dressed at the academy. She wore a linen-colored, belted tunic, with a durable, hard leather vest over it.

For her lower half, she wore a pair of dark-colored leggings designed for mobility, and on her feet were a pair of mud-caked, thick-soled leather boots.

This extremely practical outfit made her blend in completely with the rugged Adventurers around her, erasing any trace of the delicate air of a high-born Mage.

Yuna had just walked into the hall, and even though Cecilia was bundled up from head to toe, she had recognized her roommate at a single glance.

As Yuna shouted without a second thought, the female Adventurer standing next to her reacted instantly.

She had a tall, sturdy build, and was a full head taller than Yuna.

She reached out with a broad hand and clamped it down on Yuna’s head.

Yuna’s high-pitched cry was abruptly forced back down her throat.

Valeria turned and gave a few quick instructions to her teammates, telling them to go to the front desk and check in their quest items while she personally brought Yuna over.

Yuna, looking like a baby chick being carried by the scruff of its neck by a hawk, was brought over to Cecilia’s side.

The brawny female Adventurer wore a distinctly apologetic expression.

"Hello, I’m Valeria, Yuna’s internship mentor."

After speaking, she pressed lightly on the back of Yuna’s head.

"Yuna, apologize to your classmate."

At the counter, Lance was busy pouring out the bag of bloody Goblin ears to be tallied. He casually glanced over his shoulder when he heard the commotion.

Seeing that the newcomers seemed to be acquaintances of Cecilia from the academy, he turned his attention back to his own business.

Though her mind was full of questions and she had no idea what she’d done wrong, Yuna held her strict mentor in the highest reverence.

She quickly yielded to the pressure from her mentor, giving Cecilia a deep bow.

"Cecilia, I’m sorry."

Cecilia was taken aback by this sudden, formal apology.

She frantically reached out to catch Yuna’s arms, pulling her reckless roommate upright while insisting that it was fine.

Valeria looked at the young woman bundled in the dark cloak and began to explain.

"Since your classmate has chosen to wear a cloak that conceals her face, it means she definitely doesn’t want to reveal her identity in a public place."

"This is a gathering place for all sorts of Adventurers, good and bad. When you shout her name so loudly, you could easily draw the attention of nefarious groups lurking in the shadows and bring trouble down on her."

Hearing this stern lecture, Yuna finally had a rude awakening.

She finally realized just how foolish and dangerous her actions had been.

An immense sense of guilt washed over her, and she immediately began bowing to Cecilia again and again, her movements exaggerated.

Cecilia was already holding her arms, and Yuna’s wild movements almost sent them both tumbling to the floor.

While the two young women were scrambling in a flurry...

Valeria’s gaze went past them and landed on Lance, who was at the next counter cashing in his request.

Her keen Perception allowed her to spot an unusual item in the messy pile of spoils at a single glance.

It was a pair of thick canine teeth.

A Big Goblin!

Valeria was surprised. She couldn’t help but take a second look at the man wearing the Wind Hat.

’This is too strange.’

As a Professional, she couldn’t sense any title on him that would have been granted by the Underground City.

Furthermore, judging by the aura he gave off, he hadn’t even crossed the threshold to become a Professional.

’How could a novice who doesn’t even have the enhancements of the Professional Level kill a Big Goblin with its powerful Constitution all by himself?’

Driven by intense curiosity, Valeria subconsciously activated one of her Observation Skills.

A faint blue light flashed deep within her pupils.

And then she saw a shocking sight that made her scalp tingle.

In her special field of vision, the free-floating Ether Elements of all colors in the surrounding air were converging on the man’s lungs like iron filings drawn to a magnet.

And this wasn’t a simple inhalation of Ether; the moment it entered his lungs, it was being violently and ceaselessly ignited.

’How is this possible?’

Valeria found it hard to believe.

’To maintain the constant Effect of a Breathing Combat Technique while still an Ordinary person who hasn’t even chosen a Profession...’

Only an insider who had truly stepped through the gates to becoming a Professional could understand just how terrifying this sight truly was.

This touched upon a hypothesis regarding the discovery of a Great Work, proposed by the genius scholar Herman of the Church of Truth.

Herman had proposed over three hundred such hypotheses in his lifetime, twenty-eight of which had since been proven true by fanatical explorers who paid with their lives.

In this world, whenever a mortal triggered a brand-new Great Work for the first time, the great bell atop the Holy Mountain in the City of Radiance, Elcardia, would issue a boom that echoed through the heavens.

That Great Work would then be recorded in the annals of history, becoming a new blessing of Power.

And one of Herman’s hypotheses was precisely this: if a person, before reaching the Professional Level, could maintain the constant state of a Breathing Technique for twenty-four hours a day, uninterrupted for thirty days, they would trigger a brand-new Great Work.
