"I guess...theories sure are boring," the woman said.
"Once again," she leaned on Marcellus’s desk, supporting herself as she looked at other cadets in the hall.
"Saige Moreau, I’m professor of Force Regulation and Recovery," she said.
"It’s a general class if you think about it. A lot of you are from known families with legacies, or from organisations and are already affiliated, some have had masters who’re ranked individuals in the world of awakeners, but! There are also those who come from unacknowledged background, those who hid their powers, or never had the chance to really understand it," She said, and then started walking towards the podium in the centre.
"What’s basic for you who’ve been taught by masters, is a knowledge that can change life of those who’re learning force control for the first time," she said.
"And one such basic concepts is Regulation and Recovery of your Force and Core."
"Continuous use of force is bound to exhaust your core...no one can fight forever after all,"
"For some even a minute is exhausting, and that’s why, Regulation and Recovery is important to not only recover, but improve your capacity over time," she said.

’Is that why my current capacity 22 percent...’ Marcellus thought looking at his updated profile.
’Recovery through regulation. Fine. That’s a reasonable engineering constraint since no system runs indefinitely without replenishment, that’s not surprising, which really brings me back to my question of origin...what is the metaphysical mechanism of core...What’s surprising is that I don’t actually know what’s being replenished, it definitely is not force-’
"Are you feeling alright?" Maeve whispered sitting next Marcellus.
"Yes, why do you ask that?" Marcellus asked back.
"Your eyes are completely red..."
"Oh, I’ll be fine, just a nasty dream," he just rubbed it off.
"I’ll keep a small bottle of water with me from next time," she murmured.
"My~ so caring, sometimes I feel like you’re auditioning to be my wife," Marcellus said.
’This motherfu-’
Marcellus yawned a little, and Saige’s voice cut cleanly across the hall.
"If the two of you lovebirds are finished with your bickering, we’ll begin the practical component now," Saige called them out a loud.
"Oh such a wingman the professor is," Marcellus smirked.
"Regulation begins with stillness," Saige said, walking the centre aisle with her hands folded behind her back.
"Not...physical stillness, most of you can sit still. Mental stillness is what I meant. You cannot regulate a system you are actively either ignoring, or using continuously."
"Close your eyes, breathe from the base of your ribs. Stop thinking about anything, just simply do what I tell you to," she said.
Marcellus closed his eyes.
’Stop thinking about anything? Given that thinking about a specific thing requires monitoring whether you’re thinking about it, which is itself a cognitive process entirely dependent on---’
"Now some idiots will wonder how to stop thinking when the process in itself might require thinking about stopping to think, please don’t do that," Saige’s voice cut Marcellus’s thoughts, and eyes twitched to that.
"Relax your mind," Saige said calmly.
"Stop trying to understand what stillness is. You clearly can’t help yourself there. Instead...just notice. Don’t analyze the breath. Don’t model it. Simply notice that it’s happening, the way you’d notice rain on a window without needing to explain precipitation to do it."
"I feel like that is a very bad example, but it sure gives you a gist of what I mean," Saige said.
For the next ten seconds, Marcellus let his mind drift into complete stillness, a state where no thought would come to his mind.
He imagined the life he had lived as Zavian, a move reel that fast forwarded, to the point that it came to an end, and only the black mass remained.
He imagined the emptiness after death. He imagined a space where nothing existed.
[Axiom]
[Executing: Observation.]
He began to imagine that this black space of emptiness is the realm of his mind.
But regulation and recovery does not occur in a blank space of emptiness.
He needed to imagine a core.
But what really is a core.
He’s not aware of metaphysical or physical mechanism of it.
But he can construct a prototype, based on the rules and constraints he has observed up until now.
A model that can evolve spontaneously with every discovery, with every evolution.
The model did not represent the entire core, that would certainly be impossible as Marcellus lacks physical composition, the exact coordinated location, origin, and even whether the word physical is even applicable to it.
He has no instruments or tissue samples, or a measurable external reference.
Force can be accumulated, expelled, it’s core’s capacity decreases after prolonged use, recovery is said to be accelerated without external intake, and repeated regulation increases maximum capacity.
Which somehow correlates to the artificial core he had built as Zavian. The only problem his core had was inevitable death due to exposed radiation and fatigue that crossed tissue’s threshold.
He couldn’t solve the problem of nervous system being overloaded, cellular structures degrading under pressure, with metabolic demand exceeding recovery.
He was a step away from evolution.
But this world...the awakeners...they were the evolution he once aimed.
This world’s core is a natural organ, something which is the finest and the most impressive form of what Zavian had built. It’s an organ that grows at birth, one that dies with death, one that acts like a biological system for awakeners.
It’s as if the god himself had crafted an organ, inspired by his own artificial core that he had built.
Even the limits of this natural core depended on the training, which was much like how an organ or biological system should behave.
Marcellus built a functional approximation based exclusively on observed behaviour.
A central structure made of tissues, tissues of unknown substance, tissues that were capable of regulating, absorbing, and transforming the behaviour of force.
A central structure started to exist somewhere within his physiology, and it interacted with Force.
It started accumulating something associated with force, it started absorbing it, and then pumping it as if it was a heart.
The metaphysical core, that looked now looked like a dark pink orb of emanating energy now existed in the realm of his mind.
Marcellus now stopped attempting to imagine its appearance.
A natural reactor maintaining control over his force, that’s what he imagined the core to be.
[Observation Recorded: Core Visualization.]
The reconstructed Core remained suspended within the model of his physiology.
The model produced consistent results, when compared against everything observed.
Since regulation was necessary for recovery, according to Saige Moreau that is...Marcellus considered it an assumption, a strong assumption.
Marcellus began with regulating his force.
He reconstructed the natural movement of his own force, he pressured it, he amplified it.
Regulation meant controlling circulation in a manner it gave resting space to core.
That meant... he was doing the opposite.
Suddenly Marcellus stopped.
He had a hypothesis.
A core needs rest. It’s like a muscle.
When worked till exhaustion, it’ll tire out, but in resting phase it’ll recover.
Marcellus now calmed the movement of his force.
He calmed it to the point only faint hue of force regulated around the core.
He calmed it till the point every tissue of his core halted the movement of force within him.
He calmed it to the point that now his core was just an energy orb resting in the black blank space of his mind realm.
[Observation Recorded: Recovery.]
[Current Capacity: ~22%]
A few moments passed.
[Current Capacity: ~23%]
And the recovery phase began.
