The three entered the restricted corridor.
The door closed behind them with a soft hydraulic hiss, cutting off the noise from the reception area.
It was quiet here.
The corridor was narrow compared to the public section of the medical wing, with rooms placed at regular intervals on both sides. Each door had a small display beside it, showing a patient’s identity, vital status, and the personnel permitted to enter.
There were no cadets here. Only staff moved through these corridors.
Saige walked without speaking, her and Maeve’s heels were producing even sound against the polished floor, while Marcellus observed the rooms carefully.
His attention moved from one door to another, taking in the equipment visible through the glass.
Almost all the rooms were empty. That indicated that only the serious medical cases were brought here.
They reached the final section of the corridor, and Saige stopped in front of a door marked with a red restriction symbol.
{Rafe Pretoria.}
Below the name was a second line stating restricted access.
"I will ask you again...are you sure you want to see him?" Saige asked, turning to face Marcellus.
"I am." He replied.
Maeve, however, wasn’t so sure. She always hides the sight of gore even during battle.
The door slid open with a low hydraulic note.
Cold air met them first. Sterile, dry, and several degrees below normal room temperature.
The lighting inside was muted blue-white, designed to reduce strain on damaged tissue.
A single long and slightly curved pod rested in the centre of the room, slightly raised on the black medical alloy. Condensation had been engineered out of the interior surfaces so that nothing obscured the view.
Dozens of thin, flexible tubes entered the pod through sealed ports along both sides. Two thicker corrugated lines ran from the upper end of the pod into a ventilator unit that hissed in a slow rhythm.
One tube disappeared into each of Rafe’s nostrils, another, wider was fixed in his mouth and secured with soft restraints.
Clear fluid moved through several of the smaller lines, other carried darker drainage.
What remained of his body was visible through the glass.
Almost no original skin remained. The surface of his torso, arms, and what could be seen of his legs was a continuous landscape of deep partial and full thickness of burns.
In places the tissue had been reduced to a taut, glistening red-black membrane. In others it had cracked into dry, lifted plates the color of overcooked meat.
The face was the worst of it. Eyelids swollen shut, lips split, nose torn, hair gone. Ears were little more than melted ridges.
His chest rose and fell only because the machine forced it to.
A separate display mounted beside the pod, listed the damage in clean white text.
Saige stopped just beside the pod, and placed her hand over it.
"The Pretoria family has already signed the long-term maintenance agreement," she said. "They will keep him alive, but not take him home. He is no longer considered viable as an heir or an awakener."
"He is...dead to the world," she said.
Maeve had turned around to face the door the moment her eyes landed on Rafe’s body. Her gaze locked onto the door and refused to move, she swallowed once, and kept her breathing shallow.
Marcellus walked forward until he stood directly in front of the glass, opposite to Saige’s side, and studied the body with a closer look.
He did not even flinch, or show any change in expression. And Saige noted that. She was surprised.
Awakeners battle a lot, but only a rare few have the guts to witness the aftermath of their powers.
"Dead to the world," Marcellus repeated.
His eyes were still on the pod, moving in fixed pattern. Face, chest, hands, drainage lines, he was understanding the medical facility.
"Define...viable," he said.
Saige was taken aback. He was not speaking to her as if one usually converses with a professor.
"His core no longer circulates force in any pattern, he cannot walk, or feed himself, by any working definition this institution uses, that is not a life anyone builds a future on," she said.
"You’re describing failure, and calling it a verdict," he said, without even looking at her.
Saige’s bows furrowed.
"Mr. Severan, I’m describing what his own family already dec-"
"I heard what they decided." Marcellus cut her words off.
"..." Maeve was feeling the same odd personality of Marcellus surfacing.
It was as if it was the real him. Completely focused, and in control of his environment.
But he was talking to a professor right now. She didn’t know how to handle this situation.
He didn’t wait for Saige to recover. He moved toward the panel mounted beside the pod, the one displaying Rafe’s stats in clean white text, and leaned slightly to look at it properly.
He reached out and tapped the display.
The screen changed. It displayed temperature, oxygen saturation, blood pressure, respiratory support, neurological activity and core’s statistics.
"When did you become proficient in medical field, Mr. Severan?" Saige asked.
"An hour ago, Maeve knows a lot about medics," he said that with a straight face.
"..." ’Me?’ Maeve thought.
"I see, that’s certainly impressive, but I don’t think you should be fiddling with devices, Rafe’s only considered dead on records," she said.
"He is dead regardless. He’ll never wake up. And death is inevitable, even if in coma, his brain is constantly simulating nightmares because due to severe pain, he won’t last long," he said.
"So you’re thinking of using him as what? An experimental test subject?" Saige questioned.
"If you put it that way, it still raises his chances of survival," he said.
"He cannot be treated, Marcellus," Saige said, and Maeve nodded.
"Force doesn’t move atoms, it shifts what state a system is energetically willing to sit in. Damaged tissue’s stable state is the healed one. The body already "wants" to get there, it’s just rate-limited by ordinary biology like enzyme speed, blood supply, oxygen diffusion, cell division rate." Marcellus began.
He reached for the pod, and tapped on the screen. The glass pod slid open in one smooth motion.
"That rate limit is exactly why some wounds are called "untreatable". It’s not that the body lacks the ability to repair itself, it’s that the damage is winning a race against the repair process, infection spreads faster than tissue can regenerate, necrosis outpaces cell turnover, structural collapse happens before scaffolding rebuilds."
"Fortunately, we’re a civilization where we have complete control over the force because of our core. And we don’t need an external device to circulate it, because core in our bodies is a masterpiece of an instrument," he said.

"And how do you plan to heal him? Certainly you’re not a healer. Only Glein Brothers have the ability to heal anyone in the world. And even Pretoria family doesn’t have enough wealth to hire them," Saige said.
The pink hue in his eyes gleamed as his force penetrated Rafe’s body, and mapped his core in whole.
’I already know how his force moves,’ Marcellus thought, and connected his force to Rafe’s core.
For a moment, nothing happened.
He waited in silence.
Then, the dark grey force inside Rafe responded. It was weak, and disorganized.
[Observation: Remote Core Circulation.]
Rafe’s core was shattered. It was a network of channels converging around a denser center, each carrying force in Jaggard patterns.
[Axiom]
Marcellus could see the entire mechanism.
[Observation: Primary Circulation Route Confirmed.]
Rafe’s force was being guided by Marcellus deep rose force, it was calm and moving through the channels of Rafe.
The precision of it was devastating, something impossible to achieve.
[Observation: Circulation instability detected.]
[Observation: Biological repair activity detected.]
The damaged tissue was already working. Blood was already being redirected, cells were already multiplying around the wounds.
It was a natural process.
But painfully slow. Too slow.
Marcellus already knew what that meant.
Time was one thing Rafe’s body did not have.
[Observation Recorded: Endogenous Structural Restoration (ESR).]
[Execution Available.]
[Executing: Accelerated Regeneration.]
Marcellus fingers tightened as his core burned. This pain was severe than when he used zero point.
His chest jerked. The healing burns across his ribs were paining him more.
[Observation: Cellular repair accelerated.]
[Observation: Tissue reconstruction accelerated.]
[Observation: Vascular repair accelerated.]
[Observation: Neural regeneration accelerated.]
Rafe’s body shivered, his fingers twitched, his heart’s reading spiked in an instant.
The burned tissues on his skin began changing, the red-black surface softened, damaged edges contracted, fresh tissue began forming beneath dead layers.
The process could be seen clearly.
[Current Capacity: ~ 49%]
Rafe’s body continued to change, the deep burns across his arm began closing, exposed skin made fresh layers, damaged vessels reconnected, nerves connected, neurons began firing signals again.
His muscles, his bones, his skin, the process that should have taken years was happening in mere minutes and seconds.
Saige stood completely still.
She had never seen healers before. Except a rare few in this world, no one had.
The Glein Brothers could perform miracles that had become part of the know balance of power among the awakeners, but this was...devastating.
There was no healer standing beside Rafe...except Marcellus.
"Impossible," Saige whispered.
Maeve heard her, and felt something was going on, so she turned around to face them.
Marcellus was actively healing Rafe in front of Saige.
"Oh lord," Maeve was more shocked by the fact that he was healing Rafe in front of Saige, than the fact he was healing someone in the first place.
Then she looked at Rafe.
She should not have.
The changes were faster now.
The blackened layers of skin were separating from the living tissue, skin was spreading over the exposed areas, then becoming denser with every passing second. The burns were shrinking, and ruined edges of his face were slowly pulling together.
It was the first time Maeve had actually looked at him since entering the room.
Her eyes widened, and her breathing stopped for a moment.
Maeve’s face lost its color.
"Fuck...I shouldn’t have looked-"
Her eyes rolled upward, lids shut, and body went limp on the floor.
