Maeve had been thinking about the meeting since the moment message arrive.
Director Luca Ferraro had requested for both of them. Not Marcellus alone.
If the Union wanted to question Marcellus about the duel, they would have called him through the usual channels. If the IAA wanted her testimony about the Brandt incident, they already had enough reports to do it without dragging her to the top floor.
She had considered several possibilities on the way there.
Maeve exhaled slowly.
He was the head of the Union. The head of the IAA. A Combat Grade 0 awakener. He did not summon students to his office because he was curious.
If Luca Ferraro wanted an answer, there would be a reason behind the question.
She glanced at Marcellus walking beside her. He seemed completely unbothered.
Marcellus walked down the final stretch of the top floor corridor. He had pink headphones settled over his ears.
Maeve’s phone rested loosely in his right hand, soft bass leaked through the headsets for her to catch the rhythm.
"Hmm~" he hummed under his breath, matching the track.
"...Baby can you talk with your body; Tell me all the ways that you want me; You don’t need your lips so put ’em on me~..."
Maeve’s eyes narrowed, she matched his pace, and fixed her gaze on the pink headphones that did not belong to him.
"...what exactly is he listening to?" She whispered.
Marcellus kept walking, still humming the next bar. The corridor ended in a pair of massive wooden doors.
Doors looked royal, and completely different from the theme of IAA’s tower.
*hizszz*
Two thin hydraulic seams ran vertically along the centre, and the doors parted with a low hiss of hinges.
Light from the office spilled across the corridor. Beyond the doors, the room opened wide, and almost empty.
A long black desk, a wall sized display and a single shelf of ordered files and books, and the full sweep of the island was visible through the glass.
Luca Ferraro sat behind the desk, already looking toward the doors as they finished opening.
Maeve coughed her throat once. She was nervous.
Luca Ferraro was the head of Union and IAA. A combat grade 0 awakener, one of the top ten global ranked awakeners, a literal walking disaster.
She stepped forward, and stopped at a precise distance in the centre of the room.
"Director," She greeted in a low, formal tone, and bowed slightly.
"Maeve Eira, Right?" Luca gave a small nod.
"Yes, Sir," her response was enthusiastic.
But...then she felt like she was forgetting something.
Luca shifted his gaze past her and she also followed.
Marcellus had already veered past her. He walked straight past the desk, vibing to the sexual pop, and stopped in front of the compact coffee machine set into the side cabinet.
He examined the buttons for a second, selected a setting, and placed a cup under the spout.
The machine gave a quiet whir, working.
Online then did he glance over his shoulder at Luca.
"Coffee?" he asked.
Luca looked at him for a moment, and smiled.
"Yes, please." He replied.
Marcellus took a second cup, set it beside the first, and started the machine again.
Maeve stood frozen steps behind him. Her eyes widened.
"..." No matter how spoiled heirs are, every single person on the face of the earth knows how top ten global rankers are supposed to be treated.
She looked at Luca, and he was still watching Marcellus.
The coffee began pouring and Marcellus watched it fill.
He took a sip, raised his brows, and nodded in satisfaction. He then picked up Luca’s cup, walked over, and placed it on the desk in front of him.
"Here," he said.
"Thank you." Luca replied, and accepted the cup.
Maeve...just stood there.
She looked at Luca.
Then at Marcellus.
Then at the coffee.
"..." Nobody appeared to think anything was wrong.
She was the only person in the room who seemed to have a problem with what had just happened.
Marcellus pulled out the sofa chair in front of Luca, and then looked at Maeve.
"Have a seat," he said looked at Maeve.
’...What?’ she thought but eventually complied. She was confused of what was happening.
Maeve sat on the seat Marcellus had pulled, and went into deep thoughts, while Marcellus took his seat, and picked up his cup again.
"Is...this normal?" She murmured.
"No." Luca replied, and took a sip of his coffee.
Marcellus reached up the headphones, stopped the music, and settled around his neck.
"You called for us?" he asked.
Luca didn’t answer immediately. His gaze stayed on Marcellus. Something about him was odd.
What Marcellus did wasn’t intentional. Marcellus had entered the room without hesitation, he did not look at Luca first, but noticed the coffee machine, then the coffee, and then Luca.
He made it, offered one to him, and pulled out a chair for Maeve. There was no visible attempt to assert himself, or fabricated performance, or any sort of nervousness.
For him, Luca’s office is simply the location where their conversation happens, this is very different from arrogance.
And all this while, Marcellus did not feel offended at all. He did all of this so naturally.
Luca set the cup down with a soft click.
"I called for confirmation," he said, getting straight to the point.
Marcellus took another sip of his coffee, and waited.
Luca’s eyes moved once to Maeve, then returned to Marcellus.
"Professor Saige Moreau entered the medical ward, logs show she was accompanied by you and Miss Eira, shortly afterward she reported to me that the patient had undergone complete recovery including a fully functioning core which was determined to be dead," Luca began.
"She stated the process occurred under her direct observation and that you were the source," he said.
"I need you to confirm or deny that statement," he said.
Maeve’s posture tightened, her hands rested flat on her thighs.
Marcellus tilted his head, observing the cup in his hands.
"It was me," he replied.
A short silence settled over the desk. Beyond the glass the island stretched out under clear afternoon light.
"You restored a core that was declared dead?" Luca asked.
"Can...you do it again?" he asked.
"Yes," Marcellus met Luca’s eyes, and handed his cup of coffee to Maeve, which she accepted.
Luca leaned back in his chair, and kept the eye contact.
"You understand what you just did right?" he asked.
"Somewhat," Marcellus replied.
"There are two acknowledged healers in the world. Neither of them can restore a shattered core. You just did a restoration of a core, something which was considered permanent if shattered...You...have the ability to make someone an awakener once again," Luca said, calmly.
Maeve’s fingers curled slightly over the cup hearing him. She had not realized that Marcellus had even healed the core. She thought he just made it so it wouldn’t hurt Rafe anymore.
"The point is that Glein Brothers have spent decades building their position around their healing abilities, and now you have something they don’t...the power to heal even shattered cores. You are an invaluable asset for TSI, And worse...the Pledge. You are a flame to the moths, and they’ll kill each other just to be near you, or kill you to end the debate once and for all," Luca concluded.
"Oh, classy," Marcellus was impressed by the speech.
"I’ve been told I have a talent for making bad news sound pleasant," Luca scoffed.
"This information, no matter how much I try, cannot be contained. But I can do my best to not let it leak all at once," he said, and tapped on the table.
"Do not heal anyone. Availability of a power like that, can create expectations from you. If you start healing a lot of people, you will be bound with a responsibility. Make it scarce. Keep it valuable. Don’t let the masses taste that power, not unless you benefit expansively from it. You’re not a doctor who has swore an oath, you live in a world where people do anything for their own benefits, don’t let yourself give way to sympathy and heal everyone, you’ll only affect your own presence and value." Luca said and leaned forward.
"Play it right, and I know...I can already see it in your eyes. You’re not empathetic, and that’s good, child," Luca said.
"But...that’s just an advice, what you do with your powers, is totally upto you," he leaned back and shrugged his shoulders.
"Never allow your ability to become an obligation."
"I won’t," Marcellus knew it very well. He knew how it felt being enslaved for the knowledge no one possessed, he had been in the position, and he had learned it through years of enslavement, being empathetic is the worst kind of sin to have.
