Who The Hell Is Main Character?

Chapter 7: Who are you, Really? (2)

"Did he just say the professor is wrong?" someone in the back whispered.

Kyson, however, remained composed.

"And why is that?"

Marcellus answered almost immediately.

"You’re defining an organ by necessity." He spoke as though reciting something really obvious.

"The human body can survive without a kidney, without the spleen, without the appendix, without reproductive organs, but in the end...they are organs."

"So survival isn’t criterion, the defining characteristic of an organ is specialized biological tissue performing physiological function."

"The core satisfies that definition, so... it’s classified as an organ."

Professor Kyson studied him for several seconds.

"...Your name?"

"Zav---" Marcellus shut his mouth realizing what he was about to say.

"Marcellus Severan," he said.

"Then tell me, Mr. Severan. If the core is an organ, what biological system does it belong to?"

’The nervous system...’ Marcellus did not speak of those words.

From the looks of it, that statement could be controversial in a world still trying to figure out what core is.

Marcellus looked at him for a moment.

"I don’t know."

Several cadets sighed in relief, because they were actually interested in the argument.

Professor Kyson gave a small satisfactory nod.

"Then-"

"Because you’re asking the wrong question." Marcellus cut off Kyson’s words.

"When an organ is discovered, we don’t ask which system it belongs to, we ask whether out understanding of the body’s system is complete."

"Perhaps the core doesn’t belong to a known biological system, perhaps...it defines one."

Marcellus paused, letting the words settle.

"...Go on." Kyson said.

"Before the endocrine system was understood, hormones still existed. Before neurons were understood, the nervous system still existed."

"Classification follows discovery, it doesn’t precede it."

"So..." Kyson understood where Marcellus was getting at.

"You’re proposing that humanity has overlooked an entire physiological system?" he asked.

Marcellus shrugged and tilted his head.

"I’m proposing that if an organ performs a function no system explains, creating a new classification is more scientific than pretending it belongs to an existing one."

’What an impeccable scientific reasoning...’ Kyson thought.

Kyson remained silent for several moments.

He was evaluating every sentence Marcellus spoke.

The way he spoke wasn’t how just a student studying science speaks...no...he was confident.

His pause, even the moment he said ’I don’t know.’ Everything was controlled.

"...What field did you study before coming here?" he asked.

The sudden question caught most of the classroom off guard.

"...Biology."

"A university?"

"I studied under researchers."

That wasn’t a lie. Just...not in this world.

Kyson adjusted the silver frame of his spectacles.

"So your reasoning is based on biological classification rather than force theory."

"Yes." Marcellus nodded.

"Interesting..."

Kyson then uncapped his stylus again, and wrote ’Definitions.’

"The reason," Kyson said while facing the class once again, "Mr. Severan was able to argue against my statement is because he never argued force."

Several cadets looked confused.

"I deliberately defined an organ by necessity, he defined an organ by physiology, and scientifically..."

There was a brief pause.

"His definition is the correct one."

"However...The conclusion is another matter entirely."

"Mr. Severan has changed the definition, he has not yet explained the phenomenon."

He walked slowly across the circular platform.

"If the core is indeed an organ...then every organ evolves for a reason. The liver detoxifies, the lungs exchange gases, the kidneys regulate filtration, so tell me...what selective pressure created the core?"

’Evolution does not create organs, mutation does. If cores appeared worldwide within recorded history, that’s too fast. Something introduced them.’ Marcellus thought leaning back in his chair.

’No...no...no...don’t...don’t ever think like that...Just...don’t,’ he shook his head, and disbanded all the hypothesis he was about to build.

The lecture did not return to definitions again. Kyson erased the projected sentence with a swipe of his hand before sketching a rough anatomical diagram of the human torso.

The next hour became considerably less confrontational, he spoke about the history of force research, the first documented awakeners, failed classifications, gradual standardization of core measurements, and why compatibility tests existed in the first place.

His teachings were much more fundamental, driven to introduce the course instead of dumping everything in one lecture.

Occasionally, he would stop and ask the classroom simple questions.

Marcellus listened quietly, sometimes he agreed, sometimes he mentally corrected what Kyson was talking about.

When the lecture ended, the lights along the circular walls brightened once more, and a soft chime echoed throughout the hall.

"That concludes today’s orientation. From tomorrow onward, lectures will become practical. To access your training areas, you will be able to contact specific wardens of your wings when I manually approve your presence in today’s lecture," Kyson spoke.

"You are dismissed."

Conversations erupted the moment Kyson left the room.

Maeve remained seated, because Marcellus did not move from his place.

Earlier he was trying to roam around the whole campus, and now he looked like someone who could fall asleep while walking.

She quietly opened the digital profile she’d received of him weeks ago.

There was not a single report mentioning his interest in academics. Not one mentioned applied course in any science.

Her eyes slowly lifted towards Marcellus, who had his eyes closed, head leaning back in rest, facing the ceiling.

"Young Master...when did you become an expert in core science?" She asked.

"Hm? Me?" He just tilted his head and pointed at himself.

"An hour ago," he said.

’This motherfuc---Can’t he give straight answer!’ she thought.

*Knock*

Someone knocked their table once, while Marcellus did not pay any attention to it, Maeve turned her head, and found a guy leaning on the table next to them.

His hair were long, tied in a ponytail with a shade of dark red at ends of strands, and his eyes were flaming orange. He was lean, and wore a chained black zipper with upper half unzipped.

He wasn’t wearing his blazer, instead he was holding it in front of him while his hands were clasped together.

"?" Maeve was confused as to why he looked at her for moments with a smirk.

"Kaji Sato," he introduced himself with just his name.

The Sato Family’s main branch’s heir, Kaji Sato. Maeve knew of his name very well because of his combat powers and ability to control flames and a potential no awakener from his family displayed in ages.

They don’t fall in power when it comes to Severans. But Sato’s are known for their extremely violent nature which aligns with the abilities of their core.

"I’ve heard a lot about you. Apparently, the there’s not much difference in our ranks, and that caught my attention," he said.

Before she could speak anything, Kaji turned his head towards Marcellus, who was trying to take a nap.

"And I’ve heard a lot about you, too." Kaji said.

"Hm? Me?" Marcellus asked opening his eyes.

"Yes. Marcellus the Merciless. Who doesn’t know about you," he said.

"Marcellus the what?" that was his first time hearing something like this.

He looked at Maeve in confusion.

"That’s what...people call you," she said.

"Just because it rhymes doesn’t mean it’s alright...Marcellus the ...Merciless?"

"That’s so..." He paused looking for the right word.

"Cringe?" She suggested.

"Exactly,"

"I thought you knew liked it because you never raised a question against this...turns out you were just completely unaware..." she murmured.

"..." Sato was left out of the conversation he proposedly started.

"But..." he finally interrupted.

"I must say I am disappointed," he said.

Marcellus looked at Sato, and squinted his brows.

’Question. What was the sub-objective again?’

[Sub-Objective]

[Identify the Story’s Primary Character.]

[Status: Pending]

’Is he the primary character?’

[Could be.]

’Could be?’ he thought.

Sato judged Marcellus’s silence wrongly.

He scoffed at that, and leaned forward.

"I never expected heir of a military group would be a support," he said.

"But my disappointment comes not from your abilities," he continued.

"I’m disappointed because your’re not only not worthy of being an heir, but you’re holding back someone who can be much more by making her act as mere assistant," he looked at Maeve.

"?" ’What is he on about?’ she thought.

"I might be sounding a little arrogant, but I think you should not be limiting yourself, and that’s why if you intend to, in the future, when you cut ties with Severans, Satos will support you."

Kaji did not speak much, he just straightened himself, and walked off with the group of Sato Family’s cadets.

"So he’s basically asking you to leave one mnc just to join another without any incentives?" Marcellus was kind of confused.

"Right..." Maeve murmured, giving a small and tired nod.

"Wait, did you just think of it as job offer?" she asked looking at him.

"Yes? Was pretty obvious," he replied.

Maeve almost laughed at that response, pressing her fingers to her lips.

"He wasn’t recruiting me because I’m useful," she explained to him.

"He was recruiting me because if I leave Severans, they’ll face some loss, even if that loss accounts to nothing to you," she said.

"Oh...that’s petty. But what’s more concerning is treating someone like asset..." Marcellus lowered his voice as if recalling something unpleasant.

"But what’s more concerning is treating someone like an asset...that feeling of being confined, limited, and not being able to act against the wishes of those who own you...that’s worse," he said.

"Personally, I wouldn’t recommend it."

Silence settled between them, as almost everyone in the room had left.

Maeve had expected another absent-minded remark. Instead, his voice had become quiet, it shared genuine concern.

For the first time since she’d met him, there wasn’t the slightest hint of amusement on his face.

"Can we go back now? I need sleep!" he said, as his expression returned to normal.

"...Yes."
