Why Are the Psychos Obsessed with a Mere NPC?

Chapter 200 - 199: Little Eagle Must Be Feeling Guilty

Pei Yin was usually stubborn, but when it came to Jian Yu, he grew softer by the day.

It was hard to imagine that he would one day say he couldn’t bear to let her go.

"Don’t pout." Those were the only two words Jian Yu could muster.

Her voice was level, yet it was a rare display of warmth from her.

Pei Yin didn’t say a word, merely squirming a little.

He buried his head in the crook of Jian Yu’s neck, showing her the back of his head, his hair tinged with cyan.

The tips of his ears were burning. ’They must be bright red,’ he thought, subconsciously trying to hide them.

Pei Yin turned his head, using her embrace as cover.

He didn’t argue, just said awkwardly, "Be careful tomorrow."

"Okay." Jian Yu had expected Pei Yin to flip out, but he was surprisingly calm.

His arms tightened around her. Jian Yu narrowed her eyes, their color deepening as her thoughts drifted.

A faint, cool scent lingered in the air. His uneven breaths ghosted across the side of her neck, tickling her skin.

Jian Yu placed her hand on Pei Yin’s neck, feeling the faint thrum of his pulse beneath her palm.

She asked, "Is it just Ayue and one other person going to Emperor Source Star?"

Pei Yin didn’t really want to talk about other people at a time like this.

His voice was muffled. "Mhm. They’ll conduct two sweeps and probably stay for three days. Shi Yan will handle the rest."

Jian Yu pursed her lips.

’Three years,’ she thought. ’Emperor Source Star falls in about three years, so they should be fine this time.’

An inexplicable unease crept over Jian Yu. "Is Chief Ji there by himself?"

Pei Yin was confused but answered honestly, "There are a lot of Awakeners over there, so he’s enough. If there’s a problem, the Alliance will send more people."

"Mhm." Jian Yu rested her hand on Pei Yin’s back.

It was broad and strong. As her fingers traced his back, she could feel the power and sensual tension in the slight arch of his spine.

His proportions were perfect, and he was so tall that Jian Yu often forgot he was a year younger than her.

Jian Yu’s tone became like that of someone nagging a younger sibling. "You be careful at the academy, too. Stay safe. I left you plenty of incense bags. If you feel sick, use them. Don’t worry about wasting them."

A sweet warmth filled Pei Yin’s chest. "So naggy. I’d let anyone else suffer before I let myself."

The last traces of his grievance and anger vanished into thin air.

"The incense bags are only a stopgap. Even with the scent-retaining film, some of the fragrance will still leak. When you get back, I’ll make you an Absorption Meteor Crystal."

Pei Yin’s heart was now brimming with pride and sweetness.

He hugged her tightly. "A crystal forged from Meteorite Marrow Material. It has an internal gravitational field that locks in scent molecules and creates a personal aura-barrier, guaranteeing nothing will diffuse."

"Okay." Jian Yu wrapped her arms around his waist, gently patting his back with her right hand. "Go to sleep."

Worried he was holding her too tightly and making her uncomfortable, Pei Yin loosened his fingers slightly.

He lay there quietly with his eyes open, a new expression in them.

It was a look of earnest desperation, as if he was trying to grasp onto something.

He drifted off to sleep. Pei Yin’s eyelids twitched, but his consciousness only sank deeper.

His internal fire burned too hot today; even his nightmare was tinged with violence.

"Useless thing! A waste of my pure bloodline."

The shrill curses were accompanied by the sting of a whip lashing across his back and arms.

Pei Yin couldn’t remember what the woman who used to hold him looked like anymore.

The sounds that filled his ears—a woman’s wretched screams and pleas for mercy—he couldn’t remember them at all.

He only remembered Pei Hu’s savage expression and the torrent of curses as he raised a long whip imbued with spiritual power.

Every word was seared into his memory.

"Six years have passed and he still hasn’t Awakened. I’d be better off raising a beast."

"’Oh, with our two pure bloodlines, we’re sure to have a powerful son.’ What’s the point of lying to me every day? I’m telling you, Zhao Yijun, your son is never going to Awaken! If he were, he would have by now."

"And you’re still hoping to use this half-breed to claw your way back into high society? You can forget about it."

"Instead of wasting your time trying to trick me, you should be thinking about how you’re going to please those men tonight so I can get a few more Advanced Beast Crystals."

"Keep it down. Have you no shame? Your son is right downstairs listening. If he runs up here to take a look, I’m not doing anything about it."

"Signs of Awakening? Do you really think you can fool me? What kind of Awakener haven’t I seen? You’ve lied to me a hundred times, and every single time you’ve been proven wrong. With acting skills like that, you should be a star."

"Even if he does Awaken, it’s useless. I don’t want a filthy woman who has no self-respect. If you’re going to die, do it somewhere far away. Don’t ruin the view from my attic."

...

Waking from a dream is easy. All you have to do is separate it from reality.

Pei Yin opened his eyes. The usual vibrant beauty of his delicate features was gone, replaced by a restless gloom.

’I haven’t had a dream in a long time.’

’Dealing with disgusting beasts day in and day out... I’m pretty sure nothing could be more of a nightmare than my actual job.’

’Two sides of the same coin, then? So when reality gets better, the dreams get worse?’

Pei Yin lowered his head, inhaling Jian Yu’s scent. "Don’t be disgusted by me..."

Jian Yu sleepily rolled over, her arm trapping his waist. "I’m not. You’re beautiful, my treasure."

"Why are you talking like me?" Pei Yin pouted. He swallowed, a raw pain tightening his throat.

...

On the horizon, halos of multi-colored light, born from the circulation of Soul Power and spiritual power, interwove like threads, coalescing into a tense tapestry of light and silent energy.

Ling Yanzhi withdrew his gaze from the horizon, and the faint glow around him faded completely.

A lingering weariness was etched between his brows. The days of continuous sweeps had left him irritable. "Lin Yu."

Lin Yu glanced at his list and stepped forward to report. "Linxing Academy has twenty-four Soul Ghost Bodies. Star Palace Academy, thirty-seven. Four Symbols Academy is clear..."

He hesitated before continuing, "The Third Academy on Emperor Source Star—there’s an anomaly, but they’re refusing our people entry to investigate."

Ling Yanzhi turned. "Then do what we did this morning. Force our way in."

Before the inspection, every last one of them claimed there were absolutely no problems.

And what happened? He and Xi Yu ended up rounding up a whole string of small fry.

Those Soul Ghost Bodies weren’t even Level S, yet somehow not a single person noticed anything was wrong.

’Absolutely no problem.’ Not even Weis Lan would dare make such a claim.

Ling Yanzhi’s gaze fell on the person squatting beside him, lost in thought. He said to Lin Yu, "Come back tomorrow morning."

Lin Yu nodded and withdrew.

Xi Yu sat on a small stool, counting on his fingers. "One day, two days, three days..."

Without looking up, he said excitedly, "Ayan, my ocean villa will be finished in ten days."

"Mhm. Congratulations." Ling Yanzhi summoned a long bench, pillowing his head on his arm as he reclined on it.

Xi Yu paused, tilting his head. "Ayan, do you think... Baby will like it?"

"She will. She’d like it even if you didn’t prepare anything," Ling Yanzhi said, looking up at the sky distractedly. The fierce light in his eyes slowly softened.

’Thinking of Jian Yu’s social anxiety, I wonder if she’ll be able to handle her first team mission.’

A flicker of worry inexplicably sparked within him.

The Red Snake slithered onto Ling Yanzhi’s shoulder. "The distance is too great. It’s taking me a while to integrate the memories."

Its head brushed against Ling Yanzhi’s earlobe. "Little Eagle has also climbed into Yu Baby’s bed."

A cool sensation touched his ear, and the snake’s startling words snapped Ling Yanzhi out of his exhaustion and momentary daze.

"He cut in line?" Xi Yu shot to his feet, fire in his eyes.

The Red Snake soothed him, "They didn’t do anything. And Little Eagle had a nightmare."

Xi Yu slowly sat back down, his tone filled with worry. "But he hasn’t had nightmares in a long time, has he?"

The Red Snake flicked its tail. "A guilty conscience. He must be feeling guilty!"

Its childish voice took on a savage edge. "And some blind fool tried to kill Yu Baby."

Sensing the murderous shift in the air, the Red Snake coiled itself around Ling Yanzhi’s neck, steadying its master’s trembling body.

"Master said that if anyone tried to harm Yu Baby, Red Snake was to send them to hell. And Red Snake did."
