Chapter 54

" What the hell is wrong this time?!"
Luo Xin’s voice rang sharply through the apartment as she pushed the door open without waiting for a response. The sound echoed against the walls, but the person inside barely reacted.
Just like always, Jiang Li was sitting on the sofa with a duvet wrapped tightly around his body. The television flickered in front of him, casting soft light across his pale face, but his eyes were unfocused. It almost looked as though he wasn’t watching the television at all—as if the television was the one watching him.
Slowly, Jiang Li turned his head toward her.
The dullness in his honey-brown eyes made Luo Xin’s chest tighten despite herself.
"Did you buy it...?" he asked quietly, his voice cracking in a way that made her irritation spike instead of soften.
She clicked her tongue under her breath.
Yes, he was hurting.
But it was always the same reason.
The same man.
Over and over again.
It was becoming exhausting to watch.
And yet... she couldn’t say that out loud.
Not because it would hurt him—though it would—but because she understood something he clearly couldn’t control. The heart didn’t listen to logic. You couldn’t choose how deeply you loved someone.
Or how long you would keep loving them.
That was the cruelest part.
Luo Xin let out a slow breath and pinched the bridge of her nose, forcing herself to calm down before walking further into the apartment. She placed a plastic bag down on the table in front of him.
"What happened this time?" she asked, her tone still edged with frustration. Then, as if remembering something, her eyes narrowed slightly. "Wait... did you know Shen Mei is Shen Yu’s sister?"
Jiang Li bit his lower lip.
For a moment, it seemed like he might lie.
But then he sighed softly and nodded.
That single gesture made Luo Xin let out a dark, humorless chuckle. Her silver eyes hardened as she stared at him.
"You chose not to tell me."
"You never asked," Jiang Li replied quietly, his gaze dropping back to his lap.
Her hands clenched into fists at his response, irritation rising again, but she forced it down. Arguing right now wouldn’t solve anything—it never did. Instead, she turned away and walked to the fridge, pulling it open with more force than necessary.
Cold air greeted her.
Nothing else.
Just two cans of soda sitting inside.
"That’s it?" she snapped, disbelief clear in her voice. "Why the hell is your fridge empty? Where is the food, Jiang Li?!"
There was no answer.
Behind her, Jiang Li had already taken out one of the apples she brought and began eating it slowly, his head lowered as if he were trying to disappear into himself.
"How many times do I have to remind you that you’re pregnant?" Luo Xin continued, her voice rising again despite her earlier effort to calm down. "Your fridge can’t be like this. What happens if you wake up in the middle of the night craving something and there’s nothing to eat?"
Jiang Li winced slightly, pressing a hand against his temple.
"Please... stop," he murmured, his voice so faint she almost didn’t hear it.
But she did.
And just like that, her anger deflated.
With a tired sigh, she grabbed one of the soda cans and walked back, sitting down beside him. The room fell into a quiet stillness, broken only by the faint sound of the drama playing on the television, its volume barely above a whisper.
After a moment, Jiang Li leaned sideways until his head rested lightly against her shoulder.
"I messed up..." he said softly.
Luo Xin frowned but didn’t interrupt.
She knew if she started talking, she wouldn’t stop.
So she stayed silent.
And Jiang Li took that silence as permission to continue.
Slowly, haltingly, he began recounting everything that had happened five days ago. His voice shook at certain points, forcing him to pause as his grip tightened around the duvet. Luo Xin listened without interruption, her expression unreadable as she took slow sips from her soda.
By the time he finished, nearly twenty minutes had passed.
Silence settled between them again.
Luo Xin stared at him for a long moment before letting out a quiet sigh.
"So... you wanted to change him," she said finally.
Jiang Li shook his head immediately, his hands trembling.
"I never wanted to change him, Xinxin," he said, his voice breaking. "I just... I—"
He couldn’t finish.
Luo Xin turned her gaze back to the television, her grip tightening slightly around the can in her hand.
"I know," she said after a moment, her tone softer now. "You felt like something was wrong with you. You were scared that what your father said was true... that that bastard really left a mark on you."
Jiang Li stiffened.
"And you thought," she continued, her voice steady but quiet, "that you could fix everything by correcting one mistake. So you tried to turn Shen Yu into an Alpha."
She paused before adding,
"I understand why you thought that way."
Jiang Li’s breathing hitched slightly.
"But the problem is..." Luo Xin continued, finally turning to look at him again, "you had no right to do that. Jiang Li, imagine if someone tried to turn you into an omega."
The words hit him instantly.
His entire body went still.
If he had been born a beta... his life would have been different. He wouldn’t have met that Alpha. He wouldn’t have been labeled and judged because of his family.
And the thought of someone forcing him into becoming something he didn’t choose—
It made him tremble.
"What... have I done...?" he whispered, his voice barely audible.
"I didn’t mean to, Xinxin... I didn’t mean..." His words dissolved into sobs as the weight of his actions finally settled over him completely.
Luo Xin lowered her gaze to the soda can in her hands, turning it slowly between her fingers.
"Do you know what your real problem is?" she asked quietly.
Jiang Li looked at her, confused.
"You always decide things by yourself."
The words made him freeze.
"When you were being bullied, you dealt with it alone. When your mother was hurting, you carried that burden alone. When you started liking Shen Yu, you never told him what you were feeling. And when you thought something was wrong with him..." She let out a tired sigh. "You decided to solve that alone too."
Jiang Li opened his mouth, only to close it again.
Because he couldn’t deny it.
Luo Xin shook her head.
"You keep acting like you’re the only person responsible for everything. Like it’s your job to fix every problem by yourself." Her expression softened slightly. "But that’s not love, Jiang Li."
His fingers tightened around the duvet.
"Then what is?" he whispered.
"It’s trusting people enough to let them make their own choices," Luo Xin replied. "Even when you’re scared of what they’ll choose."
She pulled him into her arms, holding him tightly as he cried.
"It’s okay," she murmured softly.
But Jiang Li didn’t stop.
Not even a little.
As she continued to comfort him, a sudden knock echoed from the door.
Luo Xin pulled back slightly, frowning, before standing up. She placed the soda can in Jiang Li’s hands and walked toward the door. When she opened it, her eyes widened in surprise.
An Alpha stood there.
Tall, composed, and leaning casually against the wall as if he had been waiting. He wore a black turtleneck and dark trousers, his presence sharp and imposing.
Even without asking—
She knew who it was.
Shen Yu.
At the sound of the door opening, Shen Yu turned his head, his dark gaze landing directly on her.
"Is Jiang Li here?" he asked.
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
Luo Xin nodded slowly before glancing back—and only then did she realize Jiang Li was already standing right behind her. At the faint release of Shen Yu’s pheromones, he must have rushed over without her noticing.
Luo Xin blinked, slightly startled, before looking between the two of them.
"...I’ll go," she said quietly after a moment, placing her hands briefly on Jiang Li’s shoulders. "Can you stay alone tonight?"
Jiang Li nodded.
Satisfied, Luo Xin stepped past Shen Yu and left without another word.
The moment she was gone, the atmosphere shifted.
The apartment door clicked shut.
Silence followed.
The air between them seemed to grow heavier.
Neither of them moved.
Jiang Li instinctively took a step back.
Shen Yu stepped forward.
Another step back.
Another step forward.
Their distance closed slowly, suffocatingly, until Jiang Li could feel the weight of Shen Yu’s gaze pressing down on him.
"Why did you do that... Jiang Li?" Shen Yu asked.
His voice was cold.
So cold that it made Jiang Li flinch.
"Explain."
