Chapter 65

They exited the room in silence, the weight of everything that had just been revealed lingering heavily in the air between them. The sterile scent of the hospital still clung faintly to their clothes, mixing with something colder, sharper—the quiet aftermath of truth.
Shen Yu turned his head slightly, his dark gaze falling on the omega beside him. Jiang Li walked with his head lowered, shoulders subtly hunched as if trying to make himself smaller, as if shrinking could somehow lessen everything he had just confessed.
"Do you want me to carry you like before?" Shen Yu asked, his voice calm, almost casual, though there was something quieter beneath it—something harder to read.
Jiang Li blinked, startled by the question. He looked up briefly, their eyes meeting for only a second before he quickly looked away again, shaking his head.
"I’m okay..." he muttered softly.
Shen Yu studied him for a moment longer. The omega’s steps were steady, but there was a fragility in the way he moved, like something inside him could shatter with the slightest pressure.
Without another word, Shen Yu stepped closer and suddenly lifted Jiang Li into his arms.
Jiang Li gasped, his eyes widening in surprise as his hands instinctively grabbed onto Shen Yu’s coat.
"S-Shen Yu..." he stammered, looking down at him.
Shen Yu didn’t respond immediately. He simply glanced up at the omega in his arms, his expression unreadable before he leaned in slightly, his voice dropping into a low whisper.
"Close your eyes."
The warmth of his breath brushed against Jiang Li’s skin, sending a shiver down his spine. It wasn’t just the words—it was the way they were said, quiet and firm, leaving no room for refusal.
Jiang Li hesitated for only a moment before his eyes slowly closed. His body relaxed almost instinctively, leaning against Shen Yu’s shoulder, his fingers tightening slightly against the fabric.
He knew they were leaving the hospital. He knew they were stepping out into the open, into the world beyond those suffocating walls. But the panic inside him didn’t disappear—it only dulled, like a distant ache that refused to fade completely.
Shen Yu’s scent surrounded him, grounding him, calming him... but not enough.
Not completely.
Because the doctor’s words still echoed in his mind.
Each one felt too real.
Too possible.
What if Shen Yu believed it?
No... what if it was true?
His breathing grew uneven as the thought took root. If it was true... if he had really done that... if he had unknowingly forced Shen Yu into becoming something he never wanted to be—
Would Shen Yu still forgive him?
How many times had this happened already?
Shen Yu trusting him.
Jiang Li breaking that trust.
And Shen Yu forgiving him again.
Over and over.
Jiang Li’s chest tightened.
No matter how kind someone was... there had to be a limit.
Everyone had one.
And what if Shen Yu had already reached his?
What would happen to him then?
Jiang Li’s thoughts were abruptly interrupted when something cold brushed against his face. He flinched slightly, his eyes opening in confusion.
White flakes drifted slowly through the air.
Snow.
They were already outside.
The world beyond the hospital felt quieter, softer under the falling snow, as if everything had been muted. Shen Yu walked toward the car without a word, his steps steady against the thin layer of white beginning to form on the ground.
He opened the passenger door and carefully placed Jiang Li inside, his movements controlled and deliberate.
For a brief moment, Shen Yu turned to leave.
But then he paused.
Jiang Li was looking at him.
Those honey-brown eyes, still rimmed red from crying, stared up at him with a softness that made something in Shen Yu’s chest tighten unexpectedly. There was something vulnerable in that gaze—something pleading, something fragile.
Shen Yu didn’t understand why he stopped.
But he did.
His eyes lingered.
Those eyes...
They were beautiful.
The way they looked at him—so focused, so full—it was almost suffocating.
Slowly, the desperation in Jiang Li’s gaze softened, melting into something else.
Something dazed.
Something distant.
He looked at Shen Yu as if nothing else in the world existed.
As if Shen Yu was everything.
Like someone seeing light for the first time after a lifetime of darkness.
Like someone discovering color after only knowing gray.
Shen Yu’s breath caught in his throat.
For a brief, unguarded moment, he couldn’t look away.
But then—
"Achoo—!"
Jiang Li sneezed suddenly, breaking the moment completely.
Shen Yu blinked, turning his head sharply to the side as if snapping himself out of something dangerous.
Without another word, he walked around the car and got into the driver’s seat.
He gripped the steering wheel tightly, his knuckles paling as he took a slow, steady breath before leaning his head back against the seat.
This was dangerous.
Too dangerous.
"Are you... angry, Shen Yu...?" Jiang Li’s voice was small, hesitant, barely above a whisper.
Shen Yu turned his head slightly, his brow lifting as he looked at him.
"I..." Jiang Li hesitated, his fingers curling into his sleeves. "What if what the doctor said was true...? What if I really am the reason you manifested...?"
His voice trembled, cracking under the weight of his own fear.
"You never... wanted to be an Alpha... and I..." His words broke apart, dissolving into silence as he lowered his gaze again.
Shen Yu exhaled quietly.
"Why do you think that?" he asked.
Jiang Li blinked, startled, looking up at him.
Shen Yu held his gaze steadily.
"Why do you think I don’t want to be an Alpha?"
Jiang Li opened his mouth, then paused.
He didn’t know.
Not really.
He had only heard it—from others, from whispers, from assumptions. From the way Shen Yu reacted that day. From the anger, the rejection.
"I... don’t know," he admitted softly.
Shen Yu gave a faint nod, a small, unreadable smile touching his lips—though there was no warmth in it.
"Teahyun told you that, right?" he asked.
Jiang Li nodded.
The engine started, the low hum filling the silence as Shen Yu began to drive. One hand rested loosely on the wheel while the other leaned against the open window, cold air slipping inside.
His gaze stayed fixed on the road ahead.
Distant.
Unclear.
"Isn’t it strange," Shen Yu said after a while, "for someone to not want to be an Alpha? Being at the top of the food chain and all."
Jiang Li shook his head slightly.
"It’s not..." he murmured.
Shen Yu let out a quiet chuckle.
"Is that so...?"
Jiang Li hummed faintly, his gaze drifting to the road ahead through the windshield.
"Yes... I didn’t want to be either."
Shen Yu frowned slightly, glancing at him.
"Neither?"
"I didn’t want to be an Alpha... or an omega," Jiang Li said softly. "I didn’t want to be like my brother... or my father... or even my mother."
His voice grew quieter.
"I didn’t like what happened to her... I didn’t want that kind of future."
Shen Yu didn’t interrupt.
"I just wanted to be a beta," Jiang Li continued. "Someone normal... someone who wouldn’t be dragged into everything. Someone who could live quietly..."
His fingers tightened slightly.
"And now I realize... I wanted to take that from you."
Shen Yu stilled.
"Maybe... I already did."
Tears slipped down Jiang Li’s cheeks silently.
"I took your calm life... and pulled you into all of this chaos... just because I wanted something I couldn’t have."
His voice broke completely.
"I’m sorry... I..."
Shen Yu closed his eyes briefly, taking a slow, steady breath.
Then, without warning, he reached out and grabbed the back of Jiang Li’s neck, pulling him forward.
Shen Yu closed the distance between them, capturing Jiang Li’s lips.
Jiang Li froze, his eyes widening in shock.
But before he could react, Shen Yu moved, deepening the kiss, his grip firm, unyielding.
The warmth.
The pressure.
It overwhelmed him.
Jiang Li’s resistance faltered almost instantly.
His hands found Shen Yu’s shoulders, gripping tightly as his body leaned closer without thinking.
It felt like drowning.
Drowning in something warm, something consuming.
Something he had wanted for far too long.
Slowly, hesitantly, Jiang Li kissed him back.
His arms slipped around Shen Yu’s neck, pulling himself closer, his heart racing so fast it felt like it might burst.
But Shen Yu couldn’t hear it.
Because his own heart was beating just as wildly.
Faster.
Louder.
Only then did Shen Yu understand why he couldn’t let go.
He needed to be closer.
To the warmth.
To the softness.
To him.
Shen Yu bit down lightly on Jiang Li’s lower lip, earning a soft gasp as he deepened the kiss further.
Everything blurred.
For the first time since they met—
Jiang Li wasn’t drowning alone.

Thank you so much to everyone who stayed with Shen Yu and Jiang Li through all the tears, misunderstandings, healing, and slow-burn moments. Your comments, theories, and support truly kept me motivated to keep writing.(ToT)
This volume was about learning to stop running away—from the past, from feelings, and from each other. Watching these two slowly find their way back to one another has been one of my favorite parts of writing this story.
Now that Volume 2 has ended... a new Chapter of their lives begins. (゜ロ゜)
Volume 3 will explore new challenges, new truths, and, of course, more fluffy moments (don’t worry... I’ll feed you after making you cry \(^o^)/).
