Sun Tao’s expression changed, and he turned to look at Yang Hui.
He found that Yang Hui wasn’t as upset as he had imagined. Instead, a faint, somewhat mocking smile played on his lips.
"What’s the big deal? In high school, nobody knows what love is. It’s all just fun and games," Sun Tao said, trying to smooth things over for Yang Hui.
Hearing this, Zheng Lei laughed out loud. "But Lingyu and I have been together ever since."
He looked at Yang Hui smugly, as if to say: ’Your girl was the class beauty, but my girl is the school belle. You two already broke up, but we’re still going strong.’
Sun Tao snorted. "I have no idea what Huang Lingyu sees in you."
"What she sees in me? Sun Tao, you’re still too naive. Back in high school, the most popular guy in our class was Yang Hui because he was handsome, I’ll give him that. But good looks can’t pay the bills. Once you’re out in the real world, power is what talks, and that power is mainly economic."
Meng Fei chimed in, "Zheng Lei paid for Huang Lingyu’s tuition and living expenses for all four years of college."
"Wow, what a devoted lover. Aren’t you afraid you’re just raising a wife for someone else?"
At these words, Zheng Lei instantly shot back angrily, "What nonsense are you spouting? Lingyu isn’t that kind of person! You think she’s Lin Yu?"
Yang Hui was suddenly annoyed. ’This isn’t about Lin Yu; he’s deliberately trying to get under my skin.’
’Besides, that ill-fated relationship with Lin Yu is long over. Neither of us thinks anything of it anymore, so why does this Zheng Lei keep bringing her up?’
Before Yang Hui could get angry, Sun Tao cut in with a sneer. "If I remember correctly, you went to college in Shanghai, and Huang Lingyu was in Qingzhou. You work in Shanghai now, and she works in Qingzhou. How exactly does this relationship of yours work? No, wait, how can you be so relaxed about it?"
As soon as he said that, Zheng Lei jumped up as if someone had stepped on his tail. "Sun Tao, what are you implying? I trust Huang Lingyu. She would never betray me! We’ve been together for six years. It’s not like some people’s relationships that only last a few months."
’Wow, more passive-aggressive digs at me.’
’But trying to provoke me using Lin Yu? He’s really picked the wrong target, hasn’t he?’
Yang Hui smiled. "In those six years, I wonder how many nights you’ve actually spent with Huang Lingyu. Every other night is an opportunity for someone else. I wouldn’t be too confident if I were you."
Hearing this, Zheng Lei roared, "I’ll say it again, Lingyu is absolutely not that kind of person! Besides, I’m coming back to Qingzhou soon. I’ll always be there to protect her."
"Keep your voice down. You’re spraying spit all over the food. How is anyone else supposed to eat?"
Yang Hui said lightly, and just as Zheng Lei began to compose himself, he added more fuel to the fire. "Are you coming back to protect her or to guard her? You’re not coming back to keep an eye on her because you suspect something’s wrong, are you?"
At these words, Zheng Lei’s eyes turned red. "Yang Hui, cut the bullshit! You think I’m you, unable to even hold on to one woman?"
’Dammit, what a pain in the ass. Arguing with this moron just gets more and more embarrassing. It’s making everyone miserable.’
Seeing things were getting out of hand, Meng Fei quickly stood up to mediate. "Come on, old classmates haven’t seen each other in years. Can we change the subject? Why are we always talking about women?"
"Let’s talk about how everyone’s been doing. Housing prices have pretty much stabilized now. Have you guys bought houses yet?"
Sun Tao said, "Houses are cheap back home, so I’ve already got one on a mortgage. I’m starting to experience the life of a mortgage slave."
Meng Fei said, "Damn, not bad! Even though it’s in your hometown, you’re officially a homeowner now. The next steps are getting a car and a wife."
"What about you two?"
As a rich kid, Zheng Lei looked smug and, fueled by the alcohol, said, "My dad has already bought a house in Qingzhou."
"Damn, I’m jealous. You haven’t even moved back yet, and your dad’s already bought you a place. What about you, A Hui?"
"I’ve bought a house in Qingzhou."
Meng Fei was stunned. Even Sun Tao and Zheng Lei stared at him. They all knew Yang Hui’s family wasn’t well-off. He had only graduated two years ago, so logically, there was no way he could have bought a house.
So they all assumed Yang Hui was making a joke at Zheng Lei’s expense. After Zheng Lei said, "My dad bought a house in Qingzhou," Yang Hui followed up with, "I bought a house in Qingzhou," which sounded like he was claiming to be Zheng Lei’s father.
"What the fuck, Yang Hui, are you messing with me?"
"Don’t try to pin that on me. I have no desire to be your dad. I’m telling the truth."
He sounded very sincere, but no one else believed him, especially not Zheng Lei. But since he couldn’t prove anything, he could only suffer in silence.
But the grudge was set. The rest of the meal was unpleasant. Yang Hui said to Sun Tao, "Let’s wrap this up early. We’ll go for round two and keep drinking later."
He didn’t invite Meng Fei because he knew he would be sticking with Zheng Lei for the rest of the night. The two of them had been close back in high school.
However, Meng Fei and Sun Tao were also on good terms. They were from the same town, which is why Sun Tao had contacted him upon arriving in Qingzhou.
Zheng Lei was a lightweight to begin with. After playing a drinking game with Sun Tao and downing some hard liquor, on top of the conversation hitting a sore spot, he was already completely plastered.
Sun Tao and Yang Hui took the opportunity to suggest leaving first, while Meng Fei stayed behind to look after Zheng Lei.
"Where are we going? Find an outdoor food stall and keep drinking?"
Yang Hui’s head was a little fuzzy. He took out his phone and ordered a designated driver from an app. Just then, he received a new message on WeChat.
He opened it and saw it was a message from a hostess at a nightclub, asking him to come by and book a room.
He had gotten her contact information when he took a client to a KTV lounge in Ruijing. What a coincidence to get this message today. ’Could it be fate telling me to go there?’
Sometimes, feelings can be a mysterious thing. Once the idea popped into his head, he couldn’t suppress it.
"We’re going to a KTV."
Sun Tao didn’t think much of it, assuming it was a regular KTV where the two of them could belt out a few songs and have a couple more drinks.
Outside the restaurant, Sun Tao saw Yang Hui walking toward the parking lot and was confused. "Where are you going?"
"I called a designated driver. He’ll be here any second."
"Holy shit, A Hui, you already bought a car? You’re doing well for yourself!"
"Cars are cheap these days. It’s just a way to get around."
Sun Tao chuckled. "Why do I smell a strong whiff of bullshit? Where’s the car? Let me see our President Yang’s ride."
When the headlights of a Mercedes E-Class lit up, Sun Tao, who was picking his teeth with a toothpick, suddenly sprinted over. He didn’t even notice the pain as the toothpick jabbed his gum—he knew this car all too well. He spent his days on forums looking at its specs. It was his dream car.
He trotted up to it, his leather shoes slipping on the gravel path. "This is the top-spec model, right?" His finger hovered half a centimeter above the paint, afraid to touch it, as if admiring a museum piece.
"Yeah. You know your cars."
"Fuck, if you’d told me you had a Mercedes E-Class, I wouldn’t have drunk tonight. I could have taken it for a spin."
Yang Hui sent a message to the hostess on WeChat to book a room, and just then, the designated driver arrived.
As he got into the passenger seat, he heard Sun Tao say from the back, "This backseat is awesome. I feel like a boss."
