Teacher Chen wasn’t sure who Zheng Lei was taking a jab at with his comment, "Some people probably don’t even have a girlfriend yet."
He scanned the table. Meng Fei had just mentioned having a girlfriend, and Sun Tao, who was back in their hometown, also had one if he recalled correctly. ’Could it be Yang Hui?’
’No way. The guy’s so handsome he could get by on his looks alone. That damn Zheng Lei must be spouting nonsense again.’
Zheng Lei said to Huang Lingyu, "Lingyu, what’s there to be shy about? We’ll need Teacher Chen’s blessing when the time comes. Right, Teacher? You must be looking forward to our wedding."
Teacher Chen was about to respond, but he suddenly noticed Huang Lingyu’s odd expression. She didn’t look shy at all; in fact, she looked nauseated with disgust. He swallowed the words on the tip of his tongue.
He glanced at Zheng Lei, who was still lost in his own blissful world, and sighed internally. ’Ah, kids. Being a little foolish isn’t always a bad thing, as long as you’re happy!’
A moment later, there was another knock on the door. Lin Yu’s face lit up, and she stood up.
An Ping entered, and Lin Yu quickly said, "You’re here! Come, let me introduce you. This is my high school teacher, Teacher Chen, and these are my classmates."
"Ah, Teacher Chen, with so many outstanding former students, you’ve truly nurtured talent far and wide."
Who doesn’t enjoy a compliment? Teacher Chen immediately formed a good impression of the dapper An Ping.
The seat next to Lin Yu was empty, and An Ping took it.
"President An, right? How about some liquor?"
Sun Tao, sitting nearby, moved to pour him a glass. But An Ping quickly covered the rim of his cup and said to Teacher Chen, "Teacher, I can’t drink today. I didn’t bring my driver, so I have to drive myself home."
Teacher Chen nodded, smiling as he said it was fine, but a different thought crossed his mind:
{’Weren’t you supposed to toast me? How can you offer a toast if you’re not drinking?’}
{’This boyfriend of Lin Yu’s is a smooth talker, but his actions don’t match his words.’}
Her words seemed intended to put Zheng Lei in his place, while also showing off to everyone else.
"Teacher, in the future, if you ever need anything in Qingzhou, just say the word and An Ping can handle it for you. He’s the boss of Weitong Trading Company now, doing over a hundred million in business every year."
Whoa. Teacher Chen’s expression turned solemn. To a retired teacher with a monthly pension of around ten thousand yuan, "a hundred million" was a terrifying figure.
Of course, retail was all about volume, and a hundred million in business was just rolling cash flow; there was no telling how much of that was actual profit. Still, for someone his age to be handling a business of that scale was truly impressive.
"What was the name of the company? I didn’t quite catch it."
Lin Yu faltered for a moment, then smiled. "Weitong. W-E-I, T-O-N-G."
Teacher Chen had probably misheard it as something else. Then again, "Weitong Commerce" was certainly a mouthful.
"Teacher," An Ping explained, "our company focuses on children’s products. We’re the provincial-level agent for seven different brands."
"Impressive, impressive. President An is so young and accomplished."
Once a man has money, an age gap of ten or even twenty years suddenly doesn’t seem so awkward.
’This President An feels far more dependable than Zheng Lei. It makes sense—An Ping looks to be in his thirties and is already a company owner, while Zheng Lei is still relying on his father to find him a job.’
An Ping then noticed Yang Hui. He saw the woman beside him, Huang Lingyu, and a flicker of surprise crossed his eyes. He hadn’t expected one of Lin Yu’s classmates to be even more beautiful than her.
He’d assumed she was Yang Hui’s date. But while this girl was certainly beautiful, she couldn’t compare to the one he’d run into back in Jiang’an City.
Yang Hui hadn’t given him face last time, and he was still a little sore about it. He decided to take the opportunity to tease him a bit. "Well, if it isn’t Xiaoyang. You and this lovely lady make a fine couple. I just wonder, what does that make the girl I saw you with in Jiang’an City?"
The table fell silent for a moment before everyone realized he’d just made a mistaken assumption. Only Huang Lingyu went pale, terrified he had somehow discovered Yang Hui’s hand clasped between her legs.
Zheng Lei despised Yang Hui. Now, not only had this An Ping fellow shown up and stolen his spotlight, but he’d also mistaken Huang Lingyu for Yang Hui’s girlfriend. He was absolutely livid.
Thankfully, Teacher Chen came to his rescue. "President An, Lingyu is Zheng Lei’s girlfriend. You’ve gotten them mixed up."
An Ping let out an "Oh" and offered an apology, which made Zheng Lei feel slightly better.
Teacher Chen called for everyone to drink a toast, offering his blessings to Lin Yu and An Ping. At the same time, he glanced at Yang Hui and saw no change in his expression, which put him at ease. From An Ping’s words just now, he could tell that this kid Yang Hui was quite popular with the ladies.
A complicated look flickered in Teacher Chen’s eyes as he watched An Ping. After a moment’s consideration, he actually stood up, glass in hand, and walked over to him. "President An, there’s a favor I’d like to ask of you, if it’s convenient."
Lin Yu and An Ping both stood up and said in unison, "Teacher, just tell us what you need. There’s no need to be so formal."
But they couldn’t hide the triumphant looks on their faces. Lin Yu surveyed the room like a Queen, her gaze sweeping over everyone. Only Yang Hui seemed completely unaffected, one hand busy with his phone, the other resting out of sight beneath the table. She’d been watching him for a while now—that hand hadn’t emerged since the moment he’d sat down.
As An Ping spoke with Teacher Chen, Lin Yu, still on her feet, shot another sideways glance at Yang Hui’s arm. A peculiar thought suddenly struck her.
{’No way? From this angle, if he straightened his arm, his hand could reach Huang Lingyu’s thigh.’}
{’Impossible. He and Huang Lingyu didn’t even know each other before tonight. Why would he just start getting handsy at dinner? And why would she ever allow it?’}
{’But... why does Huang Lingyu look so unnatural? She’s even trembling slightly.’}
It wasn’t that she was just being sensitive. She knew from deep personal experience just how skilled Yang Hui’s hands were. Back in the day, he could always use those hands to drive her absolutely wild.
"President An, since you do such big business, I wonder if you’re familiar with the management at Xinyue Square?"
That sentence instantly grabbed Yang Hui’s attention. ’Teacher Chen’s problem has something to do with Xinyue Square?’
An Ping said proudly, "But of course. We’re partners. I even have some sway with President Tian, their regional head. We’ve collaborated on plenty of projects, after all."
"That’s wonderful." He breathed a sigh of relief, as if he had finally found the right person to solve his problem.
Teacher Chen then explained his request, which temporarily diverted Lin Yu’s attention. Everyone else was also focused on the conversation, so no one paid any mind to Yang Hui and Huang Lingyu. No one would have dreamed of what was happening.
Teacher Chen explained the favor he wanted to ask of An Ping. His son, who was thirty years old, had been working as a floor manager at Yida Department Store. But with department stores on the decline, he wanted to take advantage of his youth and transition into the shopping mall industry.
However, he’d interviewed at Xinyue Square and they’d turned him down, claiming his department store experience wasn’t applicable to their shopping mall.
