"Oh? And how did that go?"

"The moment he introduced himself and said he wanted to poach them, he got blocked."

Li Yang turned to him with a disdainful look. "I call you guys idiots, and you still don't accept it. You can't even poach someone properly. You should've led with the compensation package, gotten them interested, and then talked things through. Just announcing who you are without mentioning the important part—isn't that completely moronic?"

Dan Biao just hummed in agreement.

'Your nephew's a moron, and you're not much better. Your whole family is full of morons.'

"Xiaodan, you need to take this poaching business seriously. Handle it personally. We've been watching for a while now. The sales consultants at this dealership are top-notch. They're worth me paying a high salary to bring over."

In the Lantu Dream Chaser showroom, there weren't many customers at the moment. Huang Lingyu was irritably replying to a message.

[Zheng Lei: Lingyu, I've been back in Qingzhou for so long now. How are you so busy every day that you can't even spare time on the weekends? When I was out of town, all we could do was miss each other from afar. Now that we're in the same city, we should be able to see each other often.]

'As if I missed you. Every word out of your mouth stinks.'

She typed and deleted her reply several times before finally mustering the courage to write a new one.

[Huang Lingyu: Zheng Lei, I've just started my career and I want to work hard and succeed. You should be focusing on your career, too. Over the past few years, I've been able to finish my studies thanks to your family's financial support. I'm very grateful for that. Now that I can earn money, I have the ability to repay that kindness.

For the 140,000 yuan your family sponsored me with over four years, I'll pay you back 200,000, including principal and interest. But I'll need to pay it back in installments. Is that okay?]

As soon as she sent the message, she felt a weight lift off her shoulders. For years, she had been plagued by nightmares of Zheng Lei's accusations: "Huang Lingyu, without my family's money, you wouldn't have even made it through university! Letting you be my girlfriend and marry into the Zheng Family—isn't that what you owe us? You keep refusing to be with me. Are you planning on being ungrateful?"

Many times, she had been tempted to give in, thinking, 'Forget it. After all, without the Zheng Family's support, I really might not have been able to finish university or even find a job. You could say they gave me a second chance at life. I should just agree to be with Zheng Lei to repay them.'

But whenever she came to her senses, especially after seeing a message or listening to a voice mail from Zheng Lei, all the courage she had just gathered would immediately deflate. This feeling had only grown stronger since she met Yang Hui.

In contrast, even if Yang Hui had no feelings for her, she found that while his intimate touches embarrassed her, a deep look into her heart revealed that she didn't subconsciously resist them. In fact, when his hands rested on certain parts of her body, she felt a sense of longing and pleasure.

But with Zheng Lei? Just eating a meal with him made her want to keep her distance. Reading his messages about how much he missed her often made her want to run to the bathroom and throw up. Spending a lifetime with someone like that... she'd rather die.

And so, after thinking it over and over, she had finally mustered the courage to send that message today. It was time to lay all her cards on the table with him.

RING RING RING~

Her phone rang. It was Zheng Lei. Huang Lingyu thought for a moment, then rejected the call.

[Huang Lingyu: I'm busy. I can't talk on the phone right now.]

A moment later.

[Zheng Lei: Lingyu, I didn't support you just to earn interest. I want *you*. We have almost six years of history together. That's not something money can replace.]

Huang Lingyu caught a glimpse of her nauseated expression in the car's rearview mirror. 'Six years of history?' In those six years, aside from the occasional text message to catch up, she had never had a single remotely intimate conversation with him.

Every time he came to Qingzhou, they would just have a meal before she made an excuse about being too busy and left. As for them being boyfriend and girlfriend, that was just a story Zheng Lei spread around. She had never refuted it, but only because she was mindful of his family's past financial support.

She knew Zheng Lei's personality. Explanations would be useless. She had to make a clean break. Otherwise, the situation would only get messier the longer it dragged on, making it even harder to resolve. Now, while he was still unemployed, was the best time to make him give up hope. Maybe he'd even leave Qingzhou. If he kept pestering her like this, she'd be a nervous wreck every day, completely unable to focus on work.

[Huang Lingyu: Give me your bank account number. I'll transfer 60,000 to you first, and I'll pay off the rest within three years. If I don't get your account number within three days, I'll contact Uncle Zheng and transfer it to him.]

She calculated that with her current income, if she was frugal, she should be able to save up the remaining 140,000 within three years.

Working as a new energy vehicle salesperson paid decently. On a good month, her income could exceed 10,000 yuan. If she occasionally took a part-time job at a KTV, she could probably earn the money back in a year. But ever since meeting Yang Hui, she suddenly found she could no longer stomach that kind of work—acting as a drinking companion. Even if it was just drinking, it filled her with a deep sense of inferiority.

She had originally started working part-time at the KTV in the hopes of saving up 200,000 yuan as quickly as possible to cut ties with Zheng Lei for good. Now, she had no other choice but to negotiate paying him back over three years.

RING RING RING~

She picked up her phone and rejected the call again. It rang once more. Finally, she just turned her phone off. The world was finally quiet.

Seeing this, her colleague, Xiaoli, asked jokingly, "Lingyu, who are you fighting with? You're so mad you turned your phone off."

Of course, she couldn't tell Xiaoli about this whole mess. She forced a smile and said, "It's nothing, I'm not fighting with anyone."

As Xiaoli went to straighten up the decorations in a car that a customer had messed up during a test drive, she looked back and laughed. "Careful now. If your boyfriend can't reach you, he might start a fight."

Boyfriend? The first person who popped into Huang Lingyu's mind was Yang Hui. She quickly shook her head. 'I'm just letting my imagination run wild again.' Yang Hui was probably just playing around with her. Why else would he transfer money to her every time they met? It was obvious he was only willing to spend money, not get emotionally invested.

'Maybe it's because of where we met,' Huang Lingyu's expression turned sorrowful as she suddenly found herself wallowing in self-pity.

"Huang Lingyu!"

Her head was bowed in thought. She almost laughed. 'Am I hearing things?' The moment she thought of Yang Hui, she heard his voice calling her name.

"What are you grinning about like an idiot? You've gone silly, haven't you?"

The voice was right beside her. She snapped her head up. Standing in front of her, handsome and with a roguish smirk, who could it be but Yang Hui?

"Ah—" She scrambled to her feet. "What are you doing here?"

"I sent you a message, why didn't you reply? And your phone is off."

Huang Lingyu's face fell. She turned to look at Xiaoli, who was just getting out of the car and happened to overhear Yang Hui asking why her phone was off. Xiaoli burst out laughing; her prediction had unfortunately come true.

"I... I just wanted some quiet time." She couldn't very well explain the situation with Zheng Lei.

"Your head is in the clouds all day. You really do need to clear it."
