Why is This Troublemaker So Damn Rich?
Chapter 63: I Just Like Being Hated by the BossHe’d been called a pig brain by his boss three times in just a short while.
Dan Biao was so rattled he didn’t dare say another word, terrified he’d misspeak again.
Back in his office, Dan Biao recalled Cheng Jun’s attitude toward Yang Hui from yesterday. The more he thought about it, the stranger it seemed. ’Could President Li’s assessment be right? Does Xinyue Group really treat Yang Hui differently? But why?’
’I’ve seen his résumé. He’s just from some small mountain village, not the son of some big shot.’
He dialed the internal phone and summoned Yang Hui.
"A Hui, come in. Have a seat."
His attitude was different today. When dealing with a capable subordinate, there was no reason to be dismissive.
"A Hui, the boss just had a word with me. The company might be acquiring another brand soon. It’s a trendy brand that’s doing very well, and I’m thinking it would be a great opportunity to hand over to you."
As he spoke, he kept his eyes fixed on Yang Hui, expecting him to be thrilled. After all, being given such an important task right after joining was a sign of the company’s approval and a clear path for future advancement.
But after watching for a moment, he saw that Yang Hui wasn’t reacting as he’d expected. In fact, he looked completely uninterested.
"President Shan, I just took over Airex. I think I should focus on this brand for now."
’I’ve only just gotten to know the team, I don’t want to switch. Besides, it’s not like I want a big career at this company.’
’My goal is clear: I’m out of here in three months, tops.’
"A Hui, I’m not asking you to drop Airex. The new brand doesn’t have many stores; you can definitely manage both at the same time."
"I don’t think I have the capacity for that. I’d rather just focus on Airex."
’Are you kidding me? Taking on two brands? That’s just asking for a world of pain.’
’And it’s not like I want to advance here anyway.’
"A Hui, President Li likes employees who are ambitious and enjoy a challenge."
He nodded. ’All the more reason to act like I have zero ambition. I’d prefer if he disliked me.’
"Besides, you didn’t even ask what the brand is. I’ll tell you—it’s ’NLB’!"
That definitely caught Yang Hui’s attention. ’What a coincidence.’
’Zhang Chun is helping me negotiate the agency rights for ’NLB’ in Qingjiang Province. I already knew ’NLB’ had a provincial agent here with four stores. From what Dan Biao is saying, it sounds like Li Yang bought them out—agency rights, existing stores, and inventory, the whole package.’
’So that makes me Li Yang’s competitor. If Li Yang knew, would he still dare let me manage ’NLB’?’
Yang Hui had no intention of deliberately letting him know. His only demand at Futong Commerce—or at any company he might work for in the future—was the base salary, and nothing more!
Once he was on the job, his sole objective was to get fired as quickly as possible. To that end, all he had to do was consistently do things his boss disliked. He did have some moral scruples, though; he would never do anything that constituted a major breach of rules.
But when it came to making his superiors think he was having inappropriate relationships, acting arrogantly, refusing to cooperate with colleagues, and lacking ambition—those things he was more than happy to do.
"President Shan, the deal I made when I joined was to manage Airex. Let’s just forget about anything else!"
Dan Biao felt Yang Hui was being unappreciative. ’People would be fighting over a great brand like this. It’s a chance to boost his performance numbers, which would help with promotions and raises down the line.’
’From the sound of it, Yang Hui is the type to only do exactly what he’s paid for and not a single thing more. How could someone with that attitude ever get ahead in the company?’
"Fine, I get it. You can go back to your desk."
Watching Yang Hui’s retreating figure, Dan Biao shook his head. ’If President Li hadn’t specifically requested you for the job, would an opportunity this good have ever come your way? Since you’ve given it up, I guess it’s your own loss.’
A little while later, Zhang Li entered Dan Biao’s office.
"A Li, last month’s performance wasn’t great, but don’t get discouraged. Give the team a pep talk; try to catch up this month."
The mere mention of it made Zhang Li angry. His team had come in dead last in every metric, and he’d been publicly humiliated at the company-wide operations meeting.
He said resentfully, "Don’t you worry, President Shan. We’ll be fine... unless the new guy gets lucky enough to land another massive group order this month!"
Hearing this, Dan Biao opened his mouth, about to bring up the sales from Xinyue Square’s online store. But then he thought better of it. ’No need to crush the poor guy’s spirit even more.’
’This month, Erke’s performance was destined to be worse than Airex’s.’
"A Li, I called you in because I have some good news. The boss is planning to acquire the ’NLB’ brand’s market presence in Qingjiang Province. You know how well that brand performs. I’m planning to put you in charge of it."
’NLB?’ This was a golden opportunity. Zhang Li was overjoyed.
"Thank you for this opportunity, sir!"
"Alright. If you’re on board, I’ll go make the recommendation to President Li. Head back and wait for my call."
If Li Yang hadn’t specifically named Yang Hui, Dan Biao could have made this decision himself. But since he was proposing a different manager, he still needed to report it to Li Yang.
Just then, Zhang Li lowered his voice. "Sir, I heard that Yang Hui guy is a rich kid."
"Who told you that?"
Dan Biao had seen Yang Hui’s résumé. ’His parents are farmers. How could he possibly be a rich kid?’
"It’s all over the supervisors’ grapevine. The guy lives in Wenjing Yunlu and drives a Mercedes E-Class to work!"
Dan Biao’s expression suddenly turned awkward. He silently picked up his water glass, took a tactical sip, then put it back down.
’He remembered how, not long ago, he had bragged to Yang Hui about his own hundred-plus-square-meter apartment and his Cadillac.’
’He even recalled Yang Hui’s expression at the time. He’d thought it was a look of admiration, but now he realized the man was probably trying not to laugh.’
’So young, and he’s already managed to afford a luxury apartment and a Mercedes E-Class on his own?’
’Is the pay at Ruijing Commerce that good? If so, why did he leave?’
Dan Biao suddenly realized this subordinate of his was shrouded in mystery.
"Sir, I also heard he tells his subordinates they’re not allowed to work unpaid overtime. He insists they leave on time and forbids them from dealing with work matters after hours. His work ethic is all wrong, and he’s being a bad influence on the team."
Dan Biao waved it off dismissively. "He probably had a work style like that at his last company. He just got here and hasn’t adapted to the pace at Futong Commerce. It’s normal. He’ll change once he gets used to it."
RING RING~
The internal line rang, and he picked it up.
"President Shan, the boss is calling a short meeting for the operations department managers at 5:40 PM. Please be prepared and don’t be late."
It was a call from Cai Miao. Dan Biao replied, "Okay, I’ll inform everyone right away."
"The boss wants the operations management team to have a short meeting after hours."
Zhang Li smiled. He understood Dan Biao’s implication.
A particular quirk of Futong Commerce was that the boss loved holding meetings after work, under the pretext that "it won’t interfere with our actual work."
’After Yang Hui attends a few more of these meetings, let’s see if he can still stick to his principle of "not letting work bleed into personal time."’
