Why is This Troublemaker So Damn Rich?
Chapter 96: Offending Someone to Their FaceThe restaurant Li Yang booked was called the Qingzhou Banquet. It was one of the more expensive private kitchens in Qingzhou, with a per-person minimum of 898 yuan.
While Yang Hui was on his way to pick up President Tian, Li Yang and Han Chao had already arrived early.
On the way, Han Chao was already complaining to Li Yang, "This Xiaoyang is a little careless. I told him to go have Master Qin turn on the air conditioning ahead of time, but he didn’t arrange for it."
Li Yang glanced at him, then said to the driver, "Old Qin, if you still need to be reminded of things like this, then you’re done here."
The driver, Old Qin, had been caught in the crossfire and was instantly furious with Han Chao. ’We’re almost at the goddamn restaurant,’ he thought. ’Why the hell would you bring that up now?’
Han Chao froze for a second, unable to process what had happened. ’I was telling on Yang Hui, so why did the boss chew out Old Qin? Now I’ve gone and pissed off Old Qin for no good reason.’
Offending the boss’s personal assistants or driver was a major taboo. These people weren’t high-ranking, but they were part of the boss’s inner circle and saw him frequently. You never knew when they might find an opportunity to whisper a few bad words about you, and suddenly the boss would hate you without you even knowing why.
Seeing the furious look on Old Qin’s face, Han Chao’s heart began to pound with anxiety. ’This is what it means to make an enemy to their face.’
When they reached the restaurant entrance, Han Chao started complaining again. "This Xiaoyang is so clueless. He doesn’t even know to come out and meet us, or to help carry the wine upstairs."
Li Yang, who was about to head inside, stopped and said, "Old Qin, you and Xiaohan bring up a case of the baijiu and a case of the red wine."
President Tian probably wouldn’t drink at lunch, but it was best to be prepared, just in case.
As he carried the wine, Old Qin the driver shot a sarcastic look at Han Chao. "President Han, it’s one thing to try and look good in front of the boss, but could you please not drag the rest of us down with you? I’m just a driver. To you, I might be a nobody, but what’s the point of messing with me?"
Han Chao scrambled to explain, "Old Qin, I really didn’t mean it like that."
His only reply was a cold snort and the sight of Old Qin’s back as he carried the wine upstairs.
When they reached the private room, they found that Yang Hui still hadn’t arrived. Han Chao, already fuming, said irritably, "This Yang Hui is just unbelievable. How could he be late for such an important dinner? He left before us, so where did he run off to?"
’The boss is definitely going to teach Yang Hui a lesson,’ he thought. ’For a dinner this important, forget an operations manager—even if Dan Biao dared to be late, the boss would skin him alive.’
’Speaking of which, it’s strange,’ he mused. ’The boss invited President Tian, and he called me along because the Channel Development Department interfaces with the client a lot and needs to maintain that relationship.’
’But why call Yang Hui from Operations? To wait on us? If he wanted someone to serve, he should have picked someone who actually knows how to behave. This kid is late on top of it all. So unreliable.’
Li Yang was indeed a little annoyed, but he didn’t lose his temper. Yang Hui had done so many things to get on his nerves that this was child’s play in comparison. When it came to Yang Hui, he was gradually becoming immune.
"Give him a call and see what’s up."
Han Chao got Yang Hui’s number from Dan Biao and dialed. At that moment, Yang Hui and President Tian had just finished discussing the Zong Clan. The call came while they were waiting at a red light.
He pressed the answer button on his Bluetooth earpiece, only to be met with an irritated voice. "Xiaoyang, what’s with you? You’re still not at the restaurant? Do you have any idea how to act for an important dinner like this?"
Hearing this, President Tian glanced over, his brow furrowed. He was about to speak when he heard Yang Hui say calmly, "We’re almost there. Nothing’s been delayed."
He recognized Han Chao’s voice.
Hearing the dial tone, Han Chao was in disbelief. ’He actually dared to hang up on me?’ he fumed internally. ’We’ll see how long you last at this company.’
President Tian asked, "Who was that? How dare they speak to you in that tone."
Yang Hui smiled. ’Han Chao has no idea who I am; he’s probably just used to throwing his weight around.’ "It’s fine," he said aloud. "Just a supervisor from channel development."
"What an asshole."
’I didn’t expect President Tian to curse,’ Yang Hui thought. ’But from his perspective, he’s not wrong.’
Who was Yang Hui? He was someone that even the regional director, Zhang Chun, went out of his way to protect. For a mere channel development supervisor at a retail company to dare speak to him like that? That person must have a death wish.
When Yang Hui and President Tian entered the private room together, Li Yang scrambled to his feet to greet them, saying with a broad smile, "President Tian!"
He didn’t have time to ask why Yang Hui was standing beside President Tian. Han Chao, who was trailing Li Yang, shot Yang Hui a cold glare and snorted. Now was not the time to get into it.
President Tian seemed to be in a poor mood. He gave President Li a brief handshake and completely ignored Han Chao when Li Yang introduced him.
Han Chao had a huge smile plastered on his face, hoping to shake President Tian’s hand. ’If I can add him on WeChat today,’ he thought, ’I’ll have bragging rights in the vendor circles for ages.’ He could already imagine it: "The other day, when I was having drinks and a chat with President Tian..." or "When I shook President Tian’s hand, I noticed he was wearing a [Brand Name] watch..." His peers in the vendor world would be amazed. "President Han, you’re incredible! You’re actually on drinking terms with President Tian!"
But he wasn’t too embarrassed by President Tian’s snub. ’After all, the man is a total big shot. Didn’t you see how even Li Yang acts like a little gofer around him?’
"President Tian, please, the seat of honor!"
Even though he was the host, Li Yang offered the seat of honor to President Tian. Today, President Tian didn’t stand on ceremony and sat right down.
Li Yang took the seat to the right of the host, and Han Chao was about to sit on President Tian’s other side when Li Yang quickly called out, "Xiaohan, you sit over here by me."
Han Chao was baffled. ’What kind of seating arrangement is this? My rank is higher than Yang Hui’s, so logically I should be the one sitting next to President Tian. Besides, I’m the one in channel development who needs to build a relationship with the client. What’s a guy from operations like Yang Hui doing getting so close to him?’
But since Li Yang had given the order, he didn’t dare object. He walked over to the seat next to Li Yang, feeling completely bewildered and even more resentful of Yang Hui. ’If he weren’t here today, I’d be able to sit closer to President Tian. I’d have so much more to brag about later.’
"Xiaohan, go tell them to start serving the food."
"President Tian, will it be baijiu or red wine for lunch?"
Li Yang was overjoyed to hear they could have some baijiu. No feast is complete without alcohol, and many deals are best struck after a few rounds of drinks.
"Xiaohan, go open the bottle."
Han Chao was thoroughly dejected. ’So Li Yang only called me here to be the waiter,’ he thought bitterly. ’Then what’s Yang Hui doing here, just sitting there looking completely unbothered?’
Li Yang had to maintain a smile as he searched for topics to discuss with President Tian, while Yang Hui sat by himself, quietly sipping tea and occasionally checking his phone.
’They’re the important ones at this lunch, and I’m just here to serve them.’
Han Chao opened a bottle of Maotai that Li Yang had purchased specifically for entertaining important clients. After pouring a glass for President Tian and Li Yang, he grudgingly moved toward Yang Hui.
"I’m driving, so I won’t be drinking."
