Wilderness: I Tame Beasts to Survive
Chapter 341 - 246: The Evacuation PlanChapter 341: Chapter 246: The Evacuation Plan
Akatos needed some time to reunite with its master, so after they exchanged contact information, Han Ning returned to the academy to await news.
Before he left, he had informed Dean Wu and the others that he might be gone for several days, so no one seemed particularly anxious when he returned to the academy.
The academy had undergone new changes in the nearly week he’d been gone.
Buildings in the Insect-man style had shot up from the ground one after another.
To an outsider, the sight would be terrifying: swarms of insects would occasionally sweep low across the sky, leaving scorching trails of fire in their wake.
But if any other Insect-men were here, they would be astonished to discover that the riders of these insects were not their kind, but members of an "Alien Race" they had never seen before.
A complex of human-style buildings, about the size of a middle school, stood to the northeast of the academy.
From time to time, enormous insects carrying thousands of kilograms of coal would fly into the building complex.
Watching everyone work so enthusiastically to build their new home, Han Ning shook his head with a tinge of regret.
’Unfortunately, this place is destined not to be our home. It will be destroyed by those Insect-men sooner or later.’
He patted Egg Pancake’s back, signaling for it to descend and fly over the dormitory area.
The crimson Giant Dragon swept across the sky, then vanished between ripples in the air.
A small black dot plummeted downward, landing nimbly on the ground.
"Oh? Han Ning, you’re back!"
"Did you bring back any new intelligence from your trip?"
Students passing by saw Han Ning and came over to greet him.
"I do have some very important intelligence."
Han Ning replied to the students with a smile, then casually asked, "Where’s Dean Wu?"
"I think he’s at the power station."
Seeing that Han Ning was about to run toward the power station, one of the students quickly stopped him. "Mr. Rajkica just installed simple telephones in all areas of the academy. You don’t have to run all the way over there. Just go to the first floor of the new dormitory building and call Dean Wu."
"Okay, got it. Thanks!"
After saying goodbye to the students, Han Ning walked up to a wooden building.
This was the academy’s temporary dormitory building. It was said to have been built with wood collected by the Red Centipede Race from the insect swarms’ breeding grounds. Despite being made of wood, it was actually highly fire-resistant.
The wooden building was five stories tall, and its overall architectural style was that of Ancient Xia Country.
As soon as he walked through the main entrance, he saw a device resembling a pay phone in the hallway. A piece of paper was taped next to it, listing the dialing instructions for each area.
Han Ning found the number for the power station and dialed.
Before long, a voice came from the other end. "Hello? Who are you trying to reach?"
"This is Han Ning. I’m looking for Dean Wu; I have something important to discuss with him. Please have him come to the dormitory area as soon as possible, and also ask him to notify the others."
The operator on the other end obviously knew who Han Ning was. Upon hearing his name, they quickly agreed and hurried off to find Dean Wu.
...
「A dozen or so minutes later, in the second-floor conference hall of the wooden building.」
The academy’s top combatants, the heads of each department, and Dean Wu were all gathered together.
Han Ning recounted the events of the past few days to everyone in full detail.
"...So that’s the gist of it. The Insect Queen could undergo her Awakening at any moment. With our current strength, we have no way to fight her."
Upon hearing this, everyone’s expression was different.
Dean Wu’s expression was grave as he sank into deep thought.
Teacher Zhou looked worried, constantly scribbling and sketching on a piece of paper.
Teacher Liang’s brow was tightly furrowed. "Does this mean all our hard work has been for nothing?"
"What does our hard work matter compared to our lives?" Dean Wu suddenly spoke up. "A great leader once said, ’If we save the people, we can retake the land. If we save the land but lose the people, we lose everything.’ The most important thing now is to gather enough of the potion. Han Ning, I want to hear your plan."
"Leave the potion and the Gray Demon Whale to me. I’ll figure out a way to get enough of both. But I’ll need everyone’s help with the miscellaneous tasks for the evacuation—food, shelter, personnel coordination, and so on."
"Also, we should all brainstorm how our human technology might be useful during the evacuation."
"There’s a set of sophisticated, undamaged aviation equipment on the passenger jet. I think it could be very useful. To cross that unknown sea... do we really need to use a Gray Demon Whale?"
Teacher Zhou held up the paper, showing everyone what he had written.
On the paper was a list of necessities for the voyage.
This included equipment for navigation, positioning, and safety.
"According to what the Alataku said, we have to," Han Ning explained. "The Gray Demon Whale has incredibly thick skin, so it won’t be easily injured even in powerful storms. Plus, when it gets tired of flying, it can travel on the sea’s surface. Most importantly, it’s enormous, has low intelligence, is easy to control, and can support tens of thousands of creatures living on it."
"Using a human-made vessel or another Soul Beast would be too dangerous. Remember, we’re talking about Subspace turbulence, not an ordinary storm," Han Ning explained.
"Tens of thousands of creatures?!"
Everyone was shocked to hear this.
"Could it be the legendary Kunpeng?" Teacher Liang asked, his face a mask of astonishment.
"It bears some resemblance to a Kunpeng. But modifying a Gray Demon Whale into a vessel we can control will require a massive amount of materials and relevant Beast Masters. It’s a colossal project. My initial estimate is that it would take at least three years... The Queen could awaken at any time, so we must complete the preparations as quickly as possible."
"What modification materials are needed, and what’s the process? Give us the general idea, and I’ll assign people to it," Dean Wu said, pen in hand, ready to take notes.
