After feeding the Snow Leopard, Chen Wen and Gesang didn’t stay for long.
The two of them rode their horses to Zhaxi Duntu’s family camp.
After a simple lunch.
Just as Chen Wen was saying they should keep fishing to see if they could reel in some plateau naked carp,
the roar of an approaching car grew louder, and Zhaxi Duntu’s family welcomed another wave of visitors.
Zhaxi Duntu was very familiar with them; as soon as he saw who got out, he greeted them enthusiastically.
Duoji said from the side, "These are people from the reserve, and one of them is a doctor from the reserve. They must have heard about the Snow Leopard and came over to see how it’s doing now."
Hearing this, Chen Wen nodded slightly.
The other side seemed to recognize Chen Wen as well; once they met, they greeted Chen Wen warmly.
These two staff members from the reserve had come here specifically for the Snow Leopard.
So after some brief small talk,
they started asking about the Snow Leopard.
Once they confirmed the Snow Leopard was safe and sound, and had even safely given birth to two cubs, a flash of excitement crossed their faces.
One of them explained, "It’s not easy for a Snow Leopard to give birth to cubs. For it to successfully give birth to three cubs this time, we really have you to thank!"
As he spoke, this staff member asked, "Would it be convenient for us to see the Snow Leopard now and record its condition?"
Chen Wen glanced at Zhaxi Duntu, who nodded.
Only then did he say, "Sure, when should we go?"
"The sooner the better. Once we confirm the Snow Leopard is fine, we still have to rush back. There’s a blue bear mother having a difficult labor in the northern part of the reserve that needs rescue."
The veterinarian added an explanation.
Hearing this, Chen Wen didn’t delay any further.
He quickly led the two reserve staff into the valley and let them check on the three cubs.
They only took a look from a distance and jotted down a few notes before taking their leave.
Watching the two figures depart, Chen Wen didn’t say much; he didn’t want to waste their time.
But just before leaving, the veterinarian chatted a bit more with Duoji and Zhaxi Duntu, and only when the other staff member urged him did he hurriedly get in the car and drive off.
...
"Those two..."
Watching the two staff who had rushed in and rushed out, Chen Wen hesitated a little and asked, "Are they really staff from the reserve?"
Hearing this, Zhaxi Duntu gave Chen Wen a surprised look. "Yeah, why? Did something happen?"
Chen Wen shook his head slightly.
He couldn’t say for sure either.
When that staff member was observing the Snow Leopard, he’d noticed something off about the man’s eyes.
There had been a trace of greed in them.
But maybe it was just his imagination, so Chen Wen didn’t say more.
And the spare tire on their jeep had caught Chen Wen’s attention as well.
He realized the tread on that spare tire looked a bit similar to the line of tire tracks he’d seen in the wilderness earlier!
Of course, it could have been a coincidence.
After all, the tire that left those tracks had been larger than this spare.
So Chen Wen only mentioned it briefly and didn’t go deeper.
After casually changing the subject with a smile, Chen Wen planned to head out hunting again.
This time, though, he wasn’t planning to hunt fish, but pikas.
Earlier that veterinarian had mentioned to Chen Wen that pikas were actually more effective for the Snow Leopard than fish meat.
So Chen Wen decided to hunt pikas to help the Snow Leopard build up its strength.
When he heard they were going after pikas, Duoji’s eyes lit up.
He immediately volunteered to go along with Chen Wen, and Zhaxi Duntu didn’t stop him.
Because ever since he was very young, Duoji had been a dab hand at catching pikas.
With his help, the work would take half the effort and get twice the result.
Gesang shouted that she wanted to go too, but her mother’s look stopped her.
Gesang sulked back into her seat, her little mouth jutting out.
But soon, Gesang seemed to remember something.
She took out a textbook she hadn’t touched in a long time and started reading.
Noticing Gesang’s movement, Chen Wen couldn’t help but smile.
...
After he and Duoji headed out together,
the Golden Eagle also landed nearby; it had been tagging along with Chen Wen these past few days.
"Find pikas."
Chen Wen said briskly, and the Golden Eagle understood the target at once.
It beat its wings and soared into the sky.
Seeing this from the side, Duoji was astonished. "Your skill with animals is really something. This Golden Eagle is so obedient!"
Chen Wen smiled and nodded.
At this point Duoji said, "But we don’t have to go too far. I remember there are quite a lot of pikas around here."
Just as he spoke, Duoji spotted a burrow.
He urged his horse closer and leapt down from its back.
There were several very obvious little holes in the ground; Duoji walked up to them and took out a strange-looking thing.
It looked like a stick with a lens tied to the front.
Duoji lay down on the ground and pushed the stick into the burrow. After fiddling with it a few times, a beam of light reflected out from inside the hole.
Very soon, Duoji pulled his gear back out.
Frowning, he said, "How come there aren’t any pikas? This is obviously a pika burrow!"
By now Chen Wen had come over too. He glanced at the den and said, "Ahem, most of the pikas around here are pretty much dead. Before you guys came, the Golden Eagle caught quite a few."
Duoji put away his gadget and scratched his head. "Then where are we going to catch them?"
Chen Wen pointed up above. "Let’s wait for the Golden Eagle to send word. Also, what’s that thing you’re holding?"
Duoji chuckled and handed it to Chen Wen. "I made this specifically to check whether pikas are in their burrows. Try it and you’ll see."
Taking the stick-like device, Chen Wen followed Duoji’s instructions and switched it on.
Then he tried pushing the stick into the pika burrow and lay down at the entrance to look.
It was a classic little tool based on the principle of light refraction.
It mainly used refraction so that through the glass at the end of the stick, you could clearly see what was inside the pika burrow.
Chen Wen nodded and said, "Pretty handy, but you can only use it in summer."
Duoji nodded.
Pikas don’t stay in the same burrow all year round.
In summer, most of the time they live in temporary burrows—short and shallow ones that you can see into with this thing.
But once winter comes, it’s no use.
A pika’s winter burrow is its true ancestral home: deep and winding inside.
Forget people—even an unfamiliar pika going in there could end up getting lost.
Chen Wen handed the little gadget back to Duoji, and just then, the Golden Eagle returned.
It called from high above, urging Chen Wen to follow.
Chen Wen swung back into the saddle and signaled for Duoji to come along.
The two of them sped up, heading toward the spot the Golden Eagle had indicated.
