"Shit!"
Seeing this, Vikram couldn’t help getting anxious.
He swung up his spear and jabbed straight at the car’s tire.
Hiss!
Under the sharp spear, the tire held out for less than a moment before Vikram punctured it.
But the guy in the car didn’t care at all.
He stomped the gas, shifted into reverse and took off.
The engine let out a deafening roar.
He drove off without hesitation.
Vikram pulled back his spear and couldn’t help cursing, "Fuck! He got away!"
Chen Wen chuckled, "Relax, he’s not getting away."
As soon as he finished, he suddenly let out a sharp whistle.
Up in the sky, the Golden Eagle that had been circling nearby instantly spread its wings and went after the car.
Seeing this, Vikram couldn’t help showing a look of envy: a fully automatic drone—can’t livestream video, sure, but it’s more versatile than most actual drones!
Does Chen Wen teach this Beast Taming stuff to outsiders?
Vikram’s mind wandered.
Right then, Chen Wen dragged out the man he’d ambushed, hauling him from the tent like dragging a dead dog.
"This one won’t be waking up anytime soon. What about your side?"
After checking the Hunting Owl member’s breathing at his feet, Chen Wen asked.
Vikram yanked out the guy he’d grabbed; the man was clutching his arm in pain, groaning over and over.
"Talk."
Vikram spoke in English and kicked right into the guy’s wound.
Brutal.
Chen Wen thought to himself in secret as the kicked Hunting Owl member screamed.
A moment later, the man spoke Chinese: "Who are you? I never did anything to you guys, right?"
Chen Wen glanced at him—didn’t recognize the face.
He asked in Chinese, "Poachers? You with Old Dog? Or with the Barbarians?"
Hearing that, the poacher snapped his head toward Chen Wen. The second he saw Chen Wen’s face clearly, his breathing went chaotic.
"You know me?"
Chen Wen squatted down, studying the poacher’s face. "I haven’t seen your car. You should be one of the Barbarians, right? The only Hunting Owl captain who escaped."
The poacher swallowed hard and said, "Bro, we’ve got no beef with each other, why push things this far? You do your survival thing, we make our money, isn’t that great? Give me a chance, let me go."
Chen Wen snorted, "Oh, sure. You people ambushed me, grabbed the Snow Leopard cub on my side, and now suddenly it’s ’no beef’?"
Hearing that, the poacher shook his head. "No, the ones who ambushed you were Old Dog and Scarface’s guys. Our boss didn’t even know about it. He only realized he’d been exposed when Scarface’s crew got taken."
Chen Wen froze. It was the first time he’d heard that version.
He’d always thought that last ambush was all three Hunting Owl groups hitting together.
"But talking about that now is pointless. Things are already this far gone. Even if I let you go, would you let me off?"
Chen Wen shook his head. "The ones hunting you down are Zhaxi Cizhu’s team. They’ll be here soon."
Hearing that, despair flashed across the poacher’s face.
He still couldn’t figure out how he’d ended up operating in the same area as Chen Wen.
"Don’t, bro, we..."
He tried to beg.
But Chen Wen’s next words made him shudder. "Now, I ask, you answer. If your answers don’t satisfy me, I’ll have this brother here take care of you."
Chen Wen pointed at Vikram beside him. The poacher immediately said, "Ask away. I’ll tell you everything I know!"
Seeing how cooperative he was, Chen Wen nodded in satisfaction.
He started asking what he wanted to know.
Some of it was about Hunting Owl, some about their hideouts, and even where that guy who just drove off would choose to hide if he went to ground.
Turns out, people are afraid of death and pain.
With Vikram glaring at him like a tiger, the poacher spilled everything he knew like pouring beans out of a bamboo tube.
Once Chen Wen had the intel he wanted, he started asking on Vikram’s behalf.
What Vikram wanted to know surprised Chen Wen a bit.
He asked three questions.
First: where is Hunting Owl’s headquarters.
Second: who issues their orders.
Third: who’s the Hunting Owl boss on the Zambezi River side.
Those three questions are the type that even core Hunting Owl members might not know.
So the poacher couldn’t answer a single one.
Vikram seemed to have expected that; he didn’t look disappointed or show any other emotion.
"Looks like only their leaders might know the answers to those three questions."
Vikram said expressionlessly.
Once both of them were done asking, Vikram went and sat in a corner of the camp, looking a bit dejected.
Chen Wen didn’t know what to say either. He tore some cloth off the poacher’s clothes and did a simple bandage job on his wound.
The poacher looked at Chen Wen and thanked him quietly.
After hesitating for a moment, he said, "Chen Wen, be careful. Old Dog’s people are looking for you right now. They’ve got hot weapons, same sort as ours. If you run into them, be careful."
Hearing that, Chen Wen couldn’t help laughing.
He’d seen those "hot weapons"—basically last century homemade shotguns. They can hurt you, sure, but Chen Wen wasn’t scared.
Because their accuracy is absolute trash.
Without saying much more, Chen Wen tied the two men up, then used their fuel to start a fire. He tossed the Rhodiola rosea he’d prepared earlier and the ibex meat the poachers had brought into the pot of soup they’d been cooking.
For the night raid, he and Vikram were both going in on empty stomachs.
Now it was perfect—use the poachers’ stuff to eat a proper meal and even pick up two more entries.
After about an hour of cooking, Chen Wen lifted the lid, and without caring whether it was fully done or not, scooped out some ibex meat and Rhodiola rosea, and ladled himself a bowl of soup.
Smelling the aroma, Vikram hurried over with his bowl.
Chen Wen casually filled his as well, and the two of them sat by the campfire, tearing into the meat and gulping down soup, slowly feeling warmth seep back into their bodies.
Chen Wen first ate several chunks of ibex meat. Still half raw, but at least it was fresh.
After a few bites, his system stirred in his mind.
Chen Wen checked the ibex entry—two negative ones, which surprised him a bit.
But the positive entry was good enough, and he picked it without hesitation.
[Cliff Dancer (Gold): Cliffs and sheer rock faces will no longer be obstacles to you. Your movements on cliffs and precipices become lighter and more agile, and your balance improves dramatically.]
The entry looked really familiar to Chen Wen. Thinking it over, he slapped his thigh. "Isn’t this one of the three entries that popped when I tamed the Snow Leopard?"
Looks like the ibex’s agility on cliffs is on par with its natural enemy, the Snow Leopard!
Chen Wen thought as he closed the system.
Then his eyes went to the Rhodiola rosea.
Rhodiola has plenty of effects. Without overthinking it, Chen Wen tipped back a piece of Rhodiola root in one gulp.
Soon, entries popped up.
Among the three, Chen Wen locked onto the second at a glance.
[Stimulant (Purple): Active entry. Once activated, dramatically boosts heart function for five minutes. Ps: Active entry; each use requires one day of recovery. During the effect, body temperature will rise uncontrollably.]
This one’s basically a "go-all-in" entry.
Pretty much the same as injecting yourself with a Stimulant—like a shot of adrenaline.
Chen Wen felt it was quite decent.
At the very least, in a critical moment, this entry could let him unleash one burst of power in a desperate situation.
